Hating Lingard

Your memory eludes you my man. Park was getting as much stick as Fletcher and Carrick at one point. While the other two eventually won over a lot of their critics especially after 2007, Park remained a polarizing figure for a longer period of time but he did leave a cult hero

Im not saying he didn't get any praise whatsover, but some were never convinced he belonged at OT @Wibble im sure you remember. He was called three lung Park because he ran his socks off but several fans thought he was a headless chicken. Lingard will be remembered for the stunners and the Wembley goals, guaranteed. I loved Park btw, I defended him staunchly so you can't tell me otherwise. It happened

Come on! He has already being forgotten about. If he was scoring stunners every match, then you would have a point.

Don't hate him, just don't rate him.
Not a Manchester United starter in my mind
It's why I'm so vocal about Pogba. He's great, just wish he'd show it more

"Be yourself and wear my clothing line"
Bit of an oxymoron but, ok...

I’ve no idea why people compare him to Park, Lingard has never had a performance like Park vs Chelsea in 11, where he played like Kante on steroids.
Is Lingard even good defensively? He’s got a decent engine but nothing like Park’s.
People just compare him to Park because they are both attacking midfielders who don’t score or assist enough, but they forget that Park had very specific roles to play in many of his matches.

Came here to say this also. There's no hate targeted at any of our players I would hope, the ones that aren't good enough know it but at least they try. Lingard would fall into that category if I knew what he offered the team, whatever he does it isn't enough. Not a good example but I genuinely didn't know he was playing against Barcelona until the second half...

He seems like a little bitch.

The only thing I can see from Lingard is that he can pressurise the opposition keeper for a good period of time, only when he can be arsed it seems. Sometimes I get the feeling Ole asks him to rein it in a bit to try n save his motor for later in the game. Lingard can strike the ball, he can take players on, he can run all day, I just wish he'd show it more..

I guess no United supporters ever look back at videos of classic games and great moments right? I don't know how some of you guys think :houllier:. Have you forgotten all or most of the past squad players who have played for United?

I'd say it's pretty similar. Park definitely had more energy and workrate than Lingard. But did Park ever score the winner in a cup final or score individual goals like Lingard at Watford away or the dribble at Wembley vs Leicester?

They are of course different players. The comparison is that neither are talented or consistent enough to be a super star or permanent starter at United. But both are very useful squad players who will play their way into the team when on form.

I'd think better about him if I could be sure that he puts as much time into practicing scoring straightforward goals as he and Pogba appear to put into practicing their goal scoring celebrations.

I don't hate him. But he represents much which has gone wrong at Utd.

Inflated ego. Average performer. Way too much hype. More widely known for off-field activities. Shows little shame. Embarrassment to the club. A charlatan.

If Jesse Lindgard is the standard that United accept, then we may as well forget.

Three or four good performances per season makes you an average player, not a good one.

Park scored in a CL semi final and was instrumental in one of the most devastating counter attacking goals in history in the same match.
Was fantastic vs Barca in 08 at OT as well as against Milan in 2009-2010.

I agree with what you re saying though, Lingard is a good player to have in the squad but he should be doing better a lot better than how he’s been this season.

Pretty much this. I used to not like Lingard at all but cannot deny that he has slowly won me over bit by bit throughout the last few seasons, primarily due to some big moments where he really stepped up (Wembley Final). But he has not, is not and never will be good enough to be a starter for Manchester United. At least not as long as the fans' standards and expectations are where they currently are.

In my opinion, this is mainly because of an imbalanced ego:skill ratio. His arrogant celebrations highlight our fall from grace, over-celebrating 6th place... It reflectively makes playing for United look like a bit of a circus act. As if wearing the shirt means you are No. 1 but no longer have to act like it. Or worse, that you are not No. 1 but you get to go about and act like you are anyway. I think that perhaps fans have excused similar behaviour in the past only because those players have been winners through and through, that there is a sense of true entitlement that's permitted to them as such. This team really hasn't won anything. Unless we genuinely are Arsenal now, and are content with competing only for the FA Cup and a Top 4 seat.

The worst part is that Lingard is a positive, likeable lad. Which means that he will always be popular amongst the rest of the squad/fanbase and therefore probably defended for his antics. And forgiven for his flaws. But these behavioural issues are exactly why the squad is no longer made up of winners. There is now a sort of un-true entitlement pulsating through the team. And these features, unfortunately, are contagious. Particularly because, like I mentioned, Lingard has a lot of positive attributes/qualities. So it's hard to knock him down a peg in that regard. That's something Sir Alex was very good at and ultimately the fans always got behind it too. As much as we loved Becks we understood why he went. Same with Pogba in the academy. And unsurprisingly, all this applies directly to Pogba again now that he's back.

I don't hate him, but he has not shown anything of late on the pitch to love him either. He is worth half of what he is getting as pay in United.

Park had far more energy and work rate then Lingard. He was also an important part of a system. You could never have a Ronaldo on the right flank without a Park compensating on the left.

Regarding Lingard's goals well it reminds of a guy buying a lottery ticket while hoping to win. The chances of that happening are remote. The reality is that Lingard provide absolutely nothing to United. Everything around him from workrate to goal scoring, from technique to crossing stinks of average. He is the winger's answer to Darmian.

It pains me to say so because I absolutely adore the guy. However it's the truth.

We wouldn't have had this conversation if he was foreigner rather then English/homegrown talent.

Absolutely he should be doing better but he's a streaky player. United need to be able to drop him when he's in this sort of form. He was playing very well pre injury. The biggest issue is that the alternative in his position (Mata) is the polar opposite of him as a player, so there is no like for like replacement.

I think people's biggest issue with Lingard isn't how he plays but his perceived "ego". The dancing, social media, etc. I don't mind it at all. I don't think he's at all arrogant. He's just a fun loving simpleton and he seems a fun guy to have around the group. I loved the dancing at Arsenal. It was great.

In big games, I agree but there were multiple occasions where Ronaldo and Giggs or Ronaldo and Nani played on the wings in a 4 man midfield for United.

But, if you change Ronaldo to Martial and Park to Lingard, you could say exactly the same thing. Lingard provides lots of balance in the midfield and often moves into the midfield 3 when chasing the game. He played in a midfield 3 for England too.

He's an adaptable player and is very effective when on form. Currently he is in awful form so he's an easy target.

Both martial and lingard are a huge step down to Ronaldo and Park in a painfully equal manner. Just because one can sometimes work hard that does not make him park (or good enough for us) as much as someone who occasionally beats the player is a Ronaldo

Not saying in terms of quality, I am talking about style of play.

I think hindsight is also seeing Park highly overrated. He was a pretty average footballer who played a key role in some big games. But he had just as many games where he spent most of his time running around like a headless chicken and tripping over the ball.

I used to think he was overrated up until I watched him life for a couple of games. His work rate was impeccable and he knew when and which player to harass. Lingard doesn't strike me as having either park's work rate or intelligence

I like Lingard and used to be a keen follower of his from the youth days. Knew he'd one day establish himself as a squad player at United as he has some very good qualities in his locker. Was thrilled when he made his debut against Swansea under Van Gaal (and immediately gutted when he injured himself).

Problem right now is that he's a regular in the starting XI. He shouldn't be. He should be to the squad what Park, O'Shea, Phil Neville et al were. We need players like this to succeed but they shouldn't be regular starters.

I'm not the most perceptive guy in the world but I'm getting a slight vibe that you might not be Jesse's biggest fan!

Intelligence and Lingard aren't 2 words that belong in the same sentence. I do think he is technically far superior to Park. If Park attempted that cup final volley he'd have been just as likely to hit himself in the face.

Harsh, Park in fact had a lovely ping on him. Jesse's Cup final goal was a beaut, but looking at the evidence of 150 or so other matches, it was a real one off.

Lingard did have that other run of games under Jose where he kept cracking in screamers from the edge of the box. He is actually a very good finisher.

I never rated Park as a finisher. He missed so many chances and had no composure in front of goal. On the occasions he did score the overriding emotion was shock.

I'd argue that run of games was the anomaly. I mean, he's played almost 160 games for this club, work it out yourself.

Regarding Park, I'd play him every day of the week over Lingard, he was simply a much better player, the true standard of "squad player" that United should be looking for.

Don't hate him, just don't think he's good enough to play at the very highest level. Would Bayern, City or Madrid want him? If the answer is no, then he shouldn't be a long term player for us either.

Lingard is an excellent squad player. Rather than complaining he is a regular. We should complain why we haven't signed better players to start ahead of him as first XIers

Looked for the white text there.

Excellent squad players contribute with good performances when asked upon, not go hiding and add basically nothing to the team.

I like him because I think he brings balance to our best attacking line up in the false 9 position/top of the diamond. Given that players spend approximately 95% of the time without the ball I think having someone who has the skill and movement to utlilize that time is a good thing for the team as a whole. He has had hamstring injuries recently and those can take a bit of time to get over given the amount of scar tissue. He perhaps came back too soon the first time but I think he is an important player because his one touch game is in my opinion really good.

Our current manager was an "excellent" squad player. Teddy Sheringham was an excellent squad player. Mahrez at City is an excellent squad player.

Lingard is an average squad player at very best, if United are to get back on top you'd hope to have at least 2 other attacking options on the bench that you'd turn to before Lingard.

I like his personality. He’s a great lad. Has shown flickers of a breakthrough a few times, but seems to have stalled. There’s kind of a malaise around a few United players, Martial is another - they spark and fade. I loved his joyful celebrations. I wish him well.

And I think you might be, considering the overzealous and over generous assessment of a starting forward that offers 5 goals in 35 matches. He’ll be 27 at the end of the year. He’s not a youngster. He’s not gonna get any better. He had a purple patch, that is all.

But why don’t you tell all of us who he replaces in any top six side? Starter or squad rotation. Any player at all in any top six team. Go.
