Competing on all fronts is a concept foreign to this team indeed. The Premier League and returning to the CL should be the main priority
maybe we should concentrate on just winning the Europa - the only way we ill get into CL next year (which might help with future targets)

By then we would have paid him wages for a year which probably equal whatever the transfer fee we will get next year. I would love to know how contract renewals happen at United.
Sure, but I'm not one to rush to get rid of players who are United through and through. He has been a good servant at the club and as long as he's a squad player I don't mind him being around. If all of a sudden he's starting 20+ games then we have a problem...

Two years with an option for one more. Love Juan I do, great option in specific types of games

2 years is about right, I doubt we'll take the third year anyway.
Big fan of Mata, hopefully he makes the most of the next couple of years for us.

If he stays then all best to him, but now it's up to Ole to stop playing him on the right and use him where he can play to all his strengths.

You get the feeling that in bringing in Daniel James and also keeping Mata/Young, etc. Ole is about changing two things, injecting more pace (and overall fitness) and keeping a few 'old heads' with the right attitude that will help any new youngsters. The me first boys like Pogba, Martial, Sanchez will go in the shop window as direct transfers out or 'swops'. Lingard and Rashford should stay because of their Manchester-born background and assumed commitment to the club, but even these two if they don't shape up or begin to get too big for their boots, could be let go.

Had to have taken took a huge pay cut and reduced role in the squad to sign a new contract. Only way this makes sense, really.

Im happy he has signed he may not be a 1st 11 player anymore but at home especially we need a player like him to unlock defences when teams sit deep we find it hard to score. A good squad player

people losing their shit over a depth signing like this really need to get a grip. I realize many fans want to shoot 20 players into the sun and buy 20 new shiny toys, but that's never going to happen.

Mata as a veteran in a depth role is fine. He can start around 10 games, come on in others and be a mentor for the younger players. I fail to see the problem with this decision and certainly don't get why some people see this one as a sign of doom for the club as a whole.

Keeping him as a backup option is not a bad deal and he’s a great ambassador for our club. So down the line he could represent us off the pitch. He can also provide guidance to our youngsters. So overall I’m okay with this decision.

With the right players around him, Mata could still be an important player. Playing him more centrally and even deeper could make him more important. Anyone else think he could do a job in a Pirlo type of position in games where we're going to have more of the ball or in Europa league with less of a press?
He was never too suited to playing out wide, but if Pogba goes, he might get more chances at No.10.

Now that we've signed him i really home we only play him as a 10. He has no business on the right wing. He needs to play as a 10 where he is at his best. I'd go as far as to say it's his only effective role.

I'm happy to Mata is staying, but 2+1 years is too long I think. 1+1 would be better.

I hope we are going to play him as no. 10.

Ok. I love Juan and the way he tries his best on the pitch but ohh this club! We need players and we still need to ship off many of the deads here I don't know what is happening inside the club but surely it seems they have no idea what they must do.

With the club focusing on youth going forward I can only see Mata staying as a positive.
A player who has won most trophies domestically and in Europe, with an abundance of experience and a nice character to boot is just what we need to keep a bit of experience in the changing room.
People who have anything negative to say about this are just talking nonsense.
The club can afford his wages, he will serve a purpose both on and off the pitch and he will certainly chime in with important goals when needed.

so basically a 2 year deal, not 3 as we probably won't take up the 3rd year.

Initial reaction is the same as majority on here. I honestly don't really care that he's a great guy off the pitch etc. We need players who produce on it to get us back to the top. What we don't know, or I haven't gathered, yet is how much he's earning. Perhaps he's taken a pay cut to get a 2 year deal out of us etc. But I'm not going to slag the player off as it's the board who are making these crazy decisions.

I wonder if he's taken a salary decrease, hence the delay in him seeing if there's better options elsewhere before deciding. This isn't really big news but he's a decent squad player and useful if we're going to use a 10 next season.

We're all assuming it's a negative thing but actually might be some good negotiations going on there.

So he's here, I'll support him then, since Mata's actually a nice guy, always work hard on the pitch, and has international football experience. I just hope this won't be an excuse to not upgrading the team with excuse "we have enough bodies in the team" already.

It just feels that he's an irrelevant player for us over the years. But maybe Ole has more use for Mata in the future. And I trust Ole to do his best for United.

Our club is a slow moving car crash happening in front of our very eyes. Everyone and their dog can see it happening apart from the driver/those in charge.

TBH, I think he'll fill a role and happy he is staying. Obviously they have more work to do in order to rebuild the squad, but he'll be valuable depth.
