even Luckhurst thinks this is a good decision and he's constantly looking for negatives.
I dont think it is a great decision. Is it a bad one? Not sure, depends on how many games he plays.

I dont see him in the starting lineup, and also not the first guy i want to see coming off the bench. He has experience and technically is still one of the best in our squad, but his lack of pace and energy is obviously not good enough nowadays for the big things. He reminds me of a youth player, that instead of getting bigger, stronger, faster and better (apart from technique) is doing the opposite and ultimately useless for the league. He at least wont be putting in a transfer request or cause some dressing room/media upset.

I've been a big fan of mata for a very long time. When Chelsea played us and he was in the Chelsea squad i knew we would be in trouble. He was the best free kick taker in the league.

We then bought him and to this day i still can't figure out why he wasn't our main free kick taker. He scored lots of them against us.

Now we need to keep senior level players. One's that have so much experience. Ignore his age but this contract is brilliant for us. I would have mata in our team to help even if he was 40+. The senior players we have like Young, Smalling and Jones is what i question myself asking why are they still here.

Don't mind him staying. He's a squad player and has put in decent performances when called upon. Good role model to have around the youth as well.

He's been rubbish for two years and gets rewarded with a new deal. Another laughable decision by the club and all of Solskjaer's talk about being ruthless has been well and truly exposed as a load of hot air.

Very happy with this. One of our more underrated players but one of the only ones with a creative spark. A top guy too that should have a good influence on the rest of the squad.

There's 10 or 20 games a season where Mata can have a hugely positive influence, i'm sure it's entirely a squad role on the cards but he's a model pro.

We simply can't sell everyone particularly with so many want away stars, and I'd rather have someone with Mata's class and personality.

His words around the excitement and the project thats being talked about are important imo, encouraging amidst the deluge of balls transfer speculation.

Happy enough.

That's the United way, reward failure.

Ok this isn't quite as crazy as the first rumour. 2 years as a squad option but again please don't play him wide right.

I cannot believe that Juan Mata is now considered a good example of a Manchester United player.

And that, in my opinion, is the problem at the club.

Our expectations and standards have dropped, while our competitors have seeked to raise their expectations and standards.

Ask yourself would Juan Mata be even close to any of the squads (let alone first XI) @ Tottenham, Pool' etc.???

This is a joke. Ole is weak.

Poor decision to renew, would much rather Gomez got a chance over renewing a player who’s been generally ineffective for the last few years. Mata is a good bloke, but doesn’t fit anywhere in the team. Yes will bag the odd few goals per season, but honestly he should have been allowed to leave.

Good influence? How has that worked out over the last 5 years?
We need to clearing out squad numbers, so that new blood can brought in to perhaps rejuvenate us.
But, hey, it's cheaper to renew a contract of an existing player, than it is to buy a new player, so financially this makes sense. And as we are a business (the football is a side business), that's the most important thing - to save money!

I have less of a problem with Mata signing on as,say,Ashley Young.
Atleast Mata still offers something .
Agreed.

He could be useful if we played heavy on possession, but we are not going to play this way so he will be a liability on the pitch when not on the ball.
Ashley Young is a 1 year deal. Mata is a 2+1 year deal on a higher salary.

Think the arguement from the people deciding this is that it is cheaper to give them a new contract than buying a new player in that position.

Ok. I don't see his influence in Martial and Rashford, but you seems pretty confident.

That’s because rashford has fallen in with the man child jlingz and martial is obviously not committed enough to the shirt he never has been.

Are people honestly expecting the club to cast off about 6,7 players in one go? This isn’t a computer game ffs.

Makes sense to keep Mata around. Adds depth to the squad and he is not the type to throw a fuss if he’s not a regular starter.

However this does not mean we should not look for reinforcements. Everyone should be concerned if we don’t get at least 2-3 players in, not get their knickers in a twist over this extension.

Yeh, just relax, man. I gave two worst example there to make my point :D.

I'm sure Mata has some positive influence in the team. His off the pitch manner is top notch, for example.

I'm okay with it, I still think he can offer something and with the amount of games we'll have thanks to EL football we'll need all the depth we can get. If we start giving the likes of Rojo, Jones and Young new contracts then I'll be livid. Oh wait.

Very strange decision and confirms my fears that we don't really have any idea of what style we want to pursue as a club! So much for fast, dynamic attackers! We're a bit of a shambles

Ole probably sees a bit of himself in Mata. He’s a low maintenance footballer who represents the club very well. His best days are past him but he’s no mug and if we need a goal off the bench he’s as good for that as anyone.

There has to be a mixture and I can’t think of a better role model for the influx of young players supposedly coming in. A logical decision and a good one.

sometimes those over 30 (well, it used to be the case in SAF's days) had to accept a pay cut
Well they used to get 1 year contracts as well. Can imagine even getting a raise considering the state of us and how he was looking at his options...

We didn't cast off any deadwood apart from Valencia. Rojo, Jones, Young and Mata all got contracts. Even Darmian is still around. These posts need to stop. You make believe we have already sold most of the deadwood and keeping the remaining few of them.

Atrocious club management. The way we're going, we'll be lucky to stay in the PL 5 years from now.

If we still have all the deadwood by the end of the summer, you are right. It's only June though.

We already gave Jones, Young and Mata contracts in the last few months so of course they are going to be around next season.

Yet.

Also, can we move on from this ridiculous ‘deadwood’ cliche. It’s become the latest buzzword everyone is using. It’s incredibly disrespectful to human beings who don’t quite meet your exacting standards.

I’m delighted with this. Johnny Killer is as red as an ex-blue from Burgos can be, and even if hus first name according to Wiki should be pronounced ‘Xwam’, he makes me proud to be a wanna-be-Manc.

If there are players at Carrington who pose a problem, he certainly isn’t one of them, and this modern-day Choccy-n-Ghandi rolled into one may well be oart of the club staff within not too long, if nothing else as our Official Poet Laureate.

Juan mo’? Two mo! (with option of three).

What a load of phoney disingenuous garbage. I think you need to go a strawman argument beginners course because right now your attempts at them are amateurish and subpar.

If he knows that so much why doesn't he show that on the pitch?
You can’t for a second doubt his effort, don’t give me that.

He doesn’t fit in with the system, and I suspect he still won’t, but there are other players who need to be moved on more urgently.

They are. They're not all the deadwood though. Sanchez, Darmian, Bailly and Rojo could all still go.

Given Herrera, Fellaini and Valencia have already gone and Pogba, De Gea and Lukaku could go too we're potentially seeing a rapid turnover of players as is. Between all those potential sales we're already likely to see as many outgoing as the club could reasonably cope with in such a short space of time.

Disrespectful.

That made me laugh so hard.

Don't be here complaining here about how crap our performance is next season then.

Which ones?
The ones who didn't worship Mourinho perhaps.

I think Mata could have been replaced but with Herrera going, this isn't a bad decision. As others have mentioned the question is how prominent he'll be. As a squad player Mata is a solid option. If he takes game time from the younger players that's an issue.
