We already have 3 young defenders. Lindelof, Bailly and Tuanzebe we need to sign someone with experience now.
I dont see Maguire as highly experienced, I wouldn't attach much weight to the World Cup either considering the sides England came up against, nor do I see him as having the potential of a Rio/Vidic, which I think should be the benchmark.

It shows a lack of foresight and planning that we are willing to part with such a fee for a player we could have gotten for peanuts from Hull when he was already playing in the premier league a season or two ago.

It's like paying Hugo Boss prices for a Next suit, just because its better than the suits you currently own..

If it’s true, I’m okay with this. Personally, I’d have preferred De Ligt, but like Mick Jagger sang, you can’t always get what you want.

I have a sneaking suspicion we might sell Rojo and Bailly. We’d have Jones and Smalling as veteran squad?, Maguire and Lindelof as our first team side?, and Axel and Diop as backups? Who knows the LCB and RCB well enough to see if that distribution would work?
There is no chance United are signing 2 CB's.

A £60m CB to play backup? no chance this is happening mate.

I'm not sure that Maguire is realistically any more obtainable though is he..?
Leicester seem to be very resistant, and I may be wrong, but hasn't Maguire hinted that he wouldn't be interested in United?
If city go for him and he has a choice between us and them I think he would go to there. But I would hope between us and Leicester he would a move to us as a step up, just. :(
70 MILL FOR THIS feckING DONKEY TRAILER !!!

It doesn't say much for our scouts when we're willing to put down this kind of money for someone like Maguire. There has to be better options out there.
I think that's why we're going for it. He's proven in the PL, England starter international etc etc. He's pretty much going to walk in and boss our defence.

Perhaps our scouts haven't been up to scratch which is why Bailley / Rojo have been flops and Ole doesn't want to risk that this time round.

But I agree, there must be better options out there for me too

Mourinho, Pep, Southgate and now Ole rate Maguire, I guess he must be pretty good.

Diop back up? You don't spend 50m to play him as a backup.
Lindelof and Axel as backups then? I saw on the completely unreliable twitter thread that we were in for Diop as well, so it got my wondering if we’re going for both...

Let's be realistic. Spurs have peaked and they still haven't won anything. Their whole team will probably be gone by next summer by which time he'll be 31. They're on the way down. He can double his wages to come here and finally play for a really big club. No brainer really.
That's all you really need to say to a 30yo. Doing it at a big club is just an added benefit.

I believe in giving Tuanzebe and Lindelof time to see what level they really are, but neither are good enough in the air.

One of our most glaring weaknesses is conceding chances from set pieces. Which is odd given we're kind of massive (Matic, Lukaku, Pogba) but also garbage at attacking the ball. Smalling - as much as I don't rate him - is the only player useful in those situations.

So anyone we sign has to be dominant in the air, because their partner and midfield won't be.

Is Maguire that? Maybe not but he's certainly better than what we have.

I'm also hopeful AWB can offer some protection on set pieces.

Smalling and Jones should already be gone because they not good enough. Bringing in someone slower than Smalling to replace him is not the answer.

Problem at United has been slow player turnover. When players are not good enough, they need to go but be replaced by players with no massive weaknesses. £90m for a tortoise? No thanks.

This!^^

Leicester are having a laugh turning down 70m for Maguire. Hes never gonna be worth that never mind worth it now. I think whoever gets Maguire be it City or Utd, they are going to be massively ripped off. I think if United are willing to pay big, might aswell go after Koulibaly and stop this obsession with English.

If we had wheelers and dealers in the club, we could of got Harry for 70 mill all in last season, got rid of Rojo, Jones, Darmian and even Bailly as he has one year left on his contract now, this would of subsided the fee outlayed for Maguire, making a total transfer fee in the region of just over 40 mill, this would of allowed Linderof and him to build a partnership, or even Smalling and Maguire, with Alex coming back this season.

I don't know why people assume they didn't go after him, I'm sure they did. But he'd cost 100+ easily (if Napoli actually entertained offers, and that's a big if) and who knows if he'd even want to come ... most realistic scenario is that United have looked at all options and decided that Maguire is the one to go after when you consider all aspects (is he available, does he want to come etc). Doesn't mean United are just obsessed with English.

Very well put.

I don't understand what Maguire brings that we can't find in a load of other CBs, even players we already have. He's not even that good at bringing the ball out - he's not bad but why pay world class level money for someone who is basically a fit version of Phil Jones? We'd be going from a 7/10 CB to a 7.5/10 CB for stupid money

90 million  are they having a laugh.

70 mil is too much as is but 90 mil, go and buy Tah and have about 50-40mil spare sitting there to spend on Diop. It will be an absolute travesty if we end up paying more than 50 mil for this dude, especially with the CB’s who moved already this year.

Agreed. I dare whisper this in hushed tones, but if we get Maguire and Diop, and get rid of Rojo and Bailly? Is this a godfather move to sort out our CB positions once and for all?? A rare sighting of the proverbial War Chest? Do we actually have a strategy and is it fecking awesome to behold?

Probably not, but let’s at have some fun during the heat wave. Christ, it’s hot outside today.

Ole's admin has yet to sign a non British player.

Maguire for 70m would be crazy. Joachim Anderson is as good as him and would cost 1/3 the price. If Leicester want 90m then we can aim for Koulibaly

I'm surprised so many people are against this signing. I don't think we should pay 90 million for him, but he's not a bad player at all and would be a first choice defender for us for quite a while.

"They must be sick in the head if they want 90 million pands" in African man accent...But seriously, this is getting ridiculous. An average English defender for that price?

We won't be spending 130m on CBs. If we get Maguire then that will be it. I think Maguire will be our ball playing Cb with Smalling and AwB providing the much needed pace. Lindelof, tuanzebe and Jones will act as cover

The sad part is that no club, i repeat no club in the premiership will offer that for him this window or the next. We can give them the middle finger and move on.

If Andersen was as good as Maguire, he wouldn't sign for Lyon for 25m. Hasn't even played for the Danish (!) NT yet, for christs sake.

That's a genuinely surprising stat.

Do Leicester fans believe he's worth 70-90 million or are they just glad to get as much as they can from him?

On the first point, i hope you are right, but with they way our transfers have been handled in recent years, I just dont know how they manage things anymore. Quite incompetently it would seem..

And i meant the general obsession with english players these days, not specifically with United. Alot of english players get bigged up to be alot better than they actually are and a ridiculously big price tag and alot of unfufilled hype comes along with that. The last thing we need is flushing more money down the drain and ending up with something not much better that what we already have.

If we do end up getting him, i hope i'm wrong on Maguire and he turns out a powerhouse. But ive yet to see this beast of a player some others think he is.

And of course if City get him, i hope he turns out Phil Jones mkII :wenger:

Its evident that first preference is given to British talent. Regarding samp well they are a selling club who allowed Romero to go on free and sold Bruno fernandes on peanuts. That's why it's a good club to deal with

I remember a lot of articles stating Palace want 60m for AWB when that whole thing started. This might be completely different but it also just might be posturing.
