Pointless? Surely avoiding a hugely damaging hard brexit - socially, economically and hugely damaging to Ireland.

I'd say a delay is totally vital.

No more extensions, pointless
The Conservatives have been persuing brexit on the hardest, most undiplomatic terms possible for the entirety of the process. May's attempts to appease the DUP and ERG made it impossible for anyone else to support. Boris government is a joke, its a government of about 80 MP's who actually support his policies. Finding out just how much support leaving without a deal has via a General Election isn't pointless imo.

To what end? Who’s got the appetite for more months of this?
Ultimately unless we remain brexit will last 10+ years so it’s not like it will make a difference.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Brexit was the rest of our lives now.

Oh Brexit will absolutely be the rest of our lives. If we leave the Remainers will never stop and if we remain, the Brexiteers will never stop.

For me the flavour of their politics, the colour of their skin is irrelevant. It seems your basis for who needs and who does not is based on a right wing mind set. Sleep tight and think of the homeless as you do so.
Believe it or not, it is possible to think of the needy while at the same time wanting to provide a future for your own children.

Not everything is like a light switch dude.

Oh I think the Brexiteers will stop. The majority of them are driven by general xenophobia/protest vote .....not for any real quantifiable reasons that leaving the eu will enrich their lives.

So if I wanted to set aside enough so my kid could go to uni without graduating with £30k of debt I'm a hoarder?
But you can do that with just a small amount of both the current and labour proposed thresholds. Not to say you can do that before you die should you wish to make such plans but also anything above the threshold is still passed across its just taxed as income which it obviously is.

And the millions of Brexit voters that don’t fall into those two brackets?
We’re there millions that had such a vested interest in leaving the eu prior to the referendum that it was the main topic of the new everyday and we’re talking about ‘civil war’ etc etc? No. The volume has been created by whipping up the little englander/bigot vote

Look at you and your mansion. Sickening.
Mansion? It's about 680 square feet!

Fair enough, I just find taxing inheritance a difficult one. I'm coming at it from the view of seeing my in-laws work like crazy, forgo all luxuries and many basics, ,never go on holiday themselves etc, so they could put their two daughters through a UK education to masters level. Her parents were a teacher and a radiographer and they grew up in the poverty that was rife in 1960s Mauritius, so not privileged feckers.

Rubbish. The proposed labour thresholds sling a net around a whole new crowd. Normal hardworking, everyday people with fairly modest estates. It is a natural instinct to want to pass onto your children that which you have worked hard for your whole life. The Labour proposals go way too far and are an attack on this base instinct. A lot of people wont vote Labour for this reason alone. I am one of them.

Just breaking now: Saturday 19th October is Brexit D-Day.

If a deal is presented, parliament will vote on it. If not "a range of options will be explored".

Literally not a single bit of your post relates to what i actually put. Again as i don't think some understand IHT Labours proposal is as a couple that you can gain 250k tax free (oh no just 250k). Anything above 250k becomes income and you pay 40% tax.

So 500k becomes 400k, that's a fundamental attack on the instinct to want to look after your children to you? You'd be concerned how they'll get by on 400k instead of 500k? Yeah right

And if you're not a couple? If you're a single Dad?

Anything above 250k becomes income and you pay 40% tax.
And if my house is worth £350k? Not because I'm rich, but because I live in an area that has massively increased in value? I'll have paid every penny for that house, been taxed on every penny too. Why should my children pay more tax on it on my death?

So 500k becomes 400k, that's a fundamental attack on the instinct to want to look after your children to you? You'd be concerned how they'll get by on 400k instead of 500k? Yeah right
Yes, I'll be concerned. They're my children. Whatever I leave them £400 or £500k (between them) will hopefully ensure some security for them in a very uncertain future. And that amount certainly wouldn't ensure a life of luxury for them, just some help from their Dad. That is what I want for them.

Edit: And by the way, I'm not against IHT on huge, generational wealth or landed wealth. But I feel the current levels are about correct ... more importantly, fair.

So 500k is some help but 400k leaves them destitute? It's always made a polar opposite by those most against it.

Any of the amounts being talked about are significant. In this scenario you're dead you're not being taxed further your children would be on a windfall income quite rightly. Just because you may pay a lot of tax in your lifetime doesn't mean your children pay less tax, same principle, there is no family tax everyone pays tax on money in and unearned income should be taxed more as it is.

Well that virtually guarantees the backstop (or whatever they agree) will remain indefinitely as there is no way Sinn Fein and DUP will agree on anything. It certainly is a better idea than letting the DUP hold all the power as they seem determined to do everything they can to destroy Northern Ireland with a no-deal Brexit.

My view is that anything that makes the DUP furious is generally the right thing to do.

It's a masterstroke counter offer, the government can't legitimately criticize the nationalist veto without confirming their offer is a unionist one. Why not make the "landing zone" of a deal a straight NI only in/out referendum on an NI only backstop every 5 years?

That's not what I said.

Losing a parent or family member should NOT incur taxes. Sorry, I just don't agree with IHT below current levels.

Virtually my sole driving force has been to provide for my children in life and in death, so my aspiration to work hard through my whole life, buy a property and save and sacrifice to pass on my estate to my children should all be in vain? My aim is to leave them both enough to buy a small property of their own outright. As the owner of this relatively modest and paid for estate I should able to give them this gift on my death without them paying any tax on it, otherwise, why have I bothered striving all these years?

My children will be paying tax on everything they earn and do themselves, just as I have. What I wan't to do isn't ensuring they pay less tax at all.

It is a great move by the EU - looks like a concession but in reality it strengthens their position. Fingers crossed this forces Boris to finally throw the DUP under a bus.
