Fantastic result. I just wish Liverpool weren't in the title race so we can celebrate even more.

No complaints today. We're pretty susceptible to the counter attack this season and United are happy to play against teams who leave spaces in the midfield, so the result is hardly a surprise. It wasn't inevitable exactly but it was always possible, and it quickly became very likely once you got your noses in front. Much like Wolves last season, you're set up perfectly to beat teams who like to have the majority of possession but struggle whenever teams invite you onto them and ask you to create something from scratch.

The fact that you have an identifiable trait means you're in a better place under Ole than you were under Mourinho, though. Under him you had no identity, no single tactic you were well-drilled at that you could rely on to get results against the odds, and that was after three years. I think Solskjaer's one of the weakest managers in the league and there's no chance he'll get you back in the top four any time soon, but at least you know you can pick up points in big games and create a few good memories together.

As for the absolute twats in our end who were hurling objects and racist abuse at Fred and Rashford, I hope the club and the FA find them all, ban them all, and send them on educational courses. They're disgusting pricks who deserve everything they've got coming to them. As I've seen said on Twitter in the aftermath, it says a lot about the mindset and intelligence of these people that they think they can get away with doing monkey gestures on live TV in the biggest game of the weekend. Hope they're embarrassed and ashamed for the rest of their lives.
You must be surprised to see Klopp at the top of the league because he plays exactly in the same manner, without focusing too much on possession or anything, and playing direct a lot with movement from the team. It's not a matter of space... you don't win consistently high level games just by being a simple counter attacking team. For me, the team we see right now is getting very close to teams that SAF used to have around 2008. And we all know what that kind of teams can produce. The mental strength Ole is starting to bring is really the upside, beyond tactics and everything. It pushes players into a confidence level that keeps them safe.

Might get some stick for this but there is just something so exhilarating when United play well in a big game like that.. perfect blend of directness, flair, possession without being overly tiki-taka. Edge of the seat stuff.. no other team quite captures that style when we do it well.
This is a Utd forum. Why would you get stick for saying that?

I've just noticed Emptihad played Oasis song at the end of the match. Do They do this every time?

I have been really made to eat my words against Spurs & City. Just hope we are at it from the first minute against Everton, especially if they have Duncan Ferguson still in charge.

They will probably come with that sit in and low block plan that has given us problems.

Really wish those two City fans wouldn't resort to racial abuse and aeroplane gestures just because they were losing.

Hope we carry the momentum to top 4 places. We need reinforcement in January, 1 striker, 1 no.10, 1 CM and 1 winger and we will be set to compete next season.

This reminds me a bit of the Van Gaal years. I know, I know, rapid counter-attacking brilliance doesn't exactly scream a Van Gaal side but hear me out.

Just like back then, now you have the feeling that there is something in there, some spark and promise in this team because we always hold our own against the best teams, always show that we are capable of playing very intelligent and cultured football.

And then we shit the bed against Norwich or Villa or something, probably without having a shot on target.
That performance at Liverpool away with LVG is still ,to me, the best game after Fergie left.

What's better than this post game thread?

Post game thread on Bluemoon. They are turning on their team and manager.
I am having more fun with the pre match over there, to be honest!

"Do we think they’ll park the bus??? I think they’ll see what wolves etc did, 5-4-1 formation while we have the ball.
We have the players to open them up, we MUST be clinical and not spunk away our chances tonight."

This is great, no? They thought we would go for 5 in the back. We actually didn't care and just killed them with 4 in the back but 2 excellent full backs.

This game was also similar to that one because we should have been more than 2-0 in both but ended up with nerves at the end (Rooney missed a pen against the scousers as well).

"Utd are growing in confidence now that they've determined -- after years of not figuring it out -- that they don't have the side to play "attack, attack" football "the Utd way" but do have the ability to sit deep and punch hard on the counter, especially against us."

Obviously this guy in BM didn't really understand that the United way has never been about attacking a la Pep, rather going for the jugular straight away every single time the opposition tries something. Which is exactly what we did against them, and it should have been 4:0 at HT. Unlucky. But even with that score, they would not understand that our "attacking" football concept is very different than Pep's. We don't waste time or space.

Well done to the players. Well done to the manager. Well done to the club. You've made a very large fan base very proud.

Fred is actual quality. If he keeps doing what he did today he could be one of the leagues best midfielders.
Really is amazing how he's turned things around. Long may it continue! Yoouu are my Fredshine..

Fred, Mctominay, Martial and Rashford look seriously rejuvenated. I actually wonder where Pogba will slot in at this moment. Presumably in place of Lingard/Mata/Pereira. I just hope he isn't going to disrupt the understandings of the players currently.

You mean the game when Mata scored two?

That game was fluent and we played some slick football. But that Liverpool side was not good enough while this city side are champions, way better than Liverpool. If I am not wrong, the second half was not that great.

What a great result and reading the commentary, post match reports and comments, seems like we were fantastic going forward and then as a team great defensively against a quality side. Think that is a really important aspect to consider because we put in a lot just 3 days prior against Spurs, City had an extra day after an easy victory and were at home. To put in a mental and physical performance like that is huge.

Missed the game live and watched only parts of the recorded match but, been thinking about Pogba. Those that think that he is gone can ignore this but, question in general to rest, when Pogba is back how do we line up in big games like this? From what little I've seen, Lingard was essential to counter and also did a great job on Rodri. To me the McTomminay/Fred partnership should not be broken up in a game like this because they are critical to the team as a defensive unit and both still provide enough to get the ball quickly to the forward players. So should Pogba be a automatic starter in a game like this? Normally the answer is yes for any top class players but, not so sure in this current team.

Think for games against the rest, I would still absolutely line up with Pogba in the "10" role because he does have serious ability with the ball, is physically strong to receive the ball in tight places and play the killer balls in the final 3rd plus would be a threat in the box aerially or otherwise.

One thing I think is for sure, if we get another #9 in January and at least one more competent midfielders that is not named Perreira as a backup, we could be well setup to get back into the top 4.

That was just fantastic. I know it's on the counter where teams give us space that we excel but regardless the crispness of our passing in that first half and fluidity of the front three who absolute tore into City was a joy to watch. Delighted for Ole and the players.

Buzzing from the result. Had to work so kept away from all social media till i could watch it. Dont care about the rest of the league. No matter how much oil money city spends or how ‘big’ they think they are. We can still beat them at their home

just wish the emptihad actual had fans to witness this game. Anyone else noticed how quiet like a library it was till they pulled a goal back?

Our best performance of the season by a distance!

1st half, we could so easily have been more than just 2-0 up as we missed a fair few chances. I was worried that those missed chances could come back to haunt us as when you create those sort of opportunities away to Man City, you have to take them as they are more than capable of punishing you if you don’t. 2nd half, City started the 2nd half in the ascendency as expected but our defence didn’t look like it was going to be getting breached and held out strong. The way we were defending, our lead didn't look it was going to crumble and we constantly remained a threat on the counter.

Overall, a fantastic well deserved win and performance to be proud of! :D

My take.

1. VAR is used in England to try and stop pep. Too many decisions against them, I'm not even talking about this game.
2. United play so well in big games or against teams who come out to play.
3. A creative number 10 would have us beat the smaller teams and compete for top spot, Because we have the big matches sorted.
4. Wan Bissaka!!!
5. Rashford has been more Ronaldo than Obertan lately, he is world class when he plays like that.
6. Mc Tomminay is the best thing Mourinho did for us. Not sure we'd feel anyother player's absence as much as we missed him.

Watched the full match finally. Am actually surprised that people thought Anthony Taylor had a good game. The penalty shouts against us were no where near penalties and would have been daft to give, our penalty was a clear mistake on his part as well.

Then not sure how Fernadinho didn't get a card for foul on James before Rashford hit the bar and certainly when he screamed in Taylor's face when the ball hit Fred's arm and the Kyle Walker foul on Lingard - wtf was that pointing the ball was going away, that was one of the most blatant cynical fouls one could make. Several other calls he didn't make against City, one towards the end where yes James went down soft but, it's a foul 10/10, go into the back of a player even with slightest touch, it gets given.

I know we won but, that was a shit performance by him.

Great win and a great week. Probably the first time after the psg win that ive been buzzing after a united game this year. Hard to say whether this game tops the 3-2 win we got after being 2-0 down at half time to delay city's title celebrations but this one certainly had a lot more on the line and could have seen us go like 4 up before half time. I wouldn't have minded swapping rashfords pen with one of his other 2 misses, the one which hit the cross bar was a thing of beauty.

Onwards and upwards and while this may not last important and significant victories against our rivals and the big 6 is something we can savor and for.me it does look like ole will get at least until the end of this season to prove himself which he should. I hope he can find a way for us to be able to hurt teams the defend deep and retain possession better. The injuries and an undercooked roster going into the season have not helped but we could help our chances by making shrewd signings in January even if not haaland or sancho.

This must have hurt them so bad, especially since Ole said United are still the bigger team, and backed it up, haha !
And why did so many city fans chuck their lighters? Don't they realise they'll have to work the whole week to afford new ones?
Rhetorical question. I know they don't have jobs.

Yeah. He felt the pressure from the home crowd and after that and tried to compensate the rest of the game. Especially that Walker challenge on Lindgard is probably the clearest yellow you will ever see

Get in lads! Never saw this coming. Six points from these last two games is absolutely unbelievable!
I never saw the game, but I understand that it was well deserved. Two excellent results within a few days which could change the season.

I am interested in the quality of the performance, and how City looked, although I sense they are a squad that need some new faces and energy, which is understandable following their recent successes.

Ole, for now, to a degree has silenced his critics (like me, I am am happy to admit that...) . Let's see whether we can push on.

The feeling I get is that Ole is as surprised as many people are, me included.

There is a lot of bluster and pretty average out there, some recent results around the league highlight the overall standards.. There is little to be afraid of, but we need that confidence and consistency.

Looking at form, Liverpool aside, it seems the Premier League is relatively mediocre... We haven't turned into a good team in two games.

However, Rashford has inspired us, and has shown his true value and talent, and most importantly, a more direct and effective method of play. When he keeps his game simple, he is a more effective player, and he now inspires our team. Hugely. And he is scoring goals. I do hope he keeps that focus. Because we need it.

Best footy I've seen played in years! Wan Bissaka, outstanding rock of a player. McTominay has been huge in the midfield. James, harrying players and creating chances...Amazeballs!

Wow, what utter drivel. The league is mediocre now because United won a few games? How do you explain United outplaying Liverpool at OT then if they're the outstanding team?

The EPL is clearly the strongest (and richest) league in world football at the moment. United have a young and talented first 11 and are capable of competing with anyone on their day when everyone is fit.

But they have an inexperienced and thin squad so injuries, suspensions and loss of form has a big impact on the side and as a result they are very inconsistent.

Walkers speed is something to to behold. Hadn't it been for his speed we would have walked away with another 2-3 goals. I think he is the only defender in the league that could match our front 3 like that
