So, she wants to keep her house, her allowance, her rights to t-shirts selling, she wants to keep the security details, etc.

Which part of financial independence we're talking about?
Where's the evidence of this? Why do you think it's only her?

It's funny, early this morning someone mentioned Edward VIII. He married an American divorcee and they ended up living in semi-exile in France - albeit in the lap of absolute luxury, even though he'd abdicated in order to marry said divorcee. Of course, in modern times Charles was able to marry a divorced woman and retain his position as heir to the Queen, because times have changed along with public attitudes to divorce. Even in the 1950s the Queen's sister Margaret didn't marry Peter Townsend because he was divorced and she was told she'd have to give up her Royal status to marry him.

Back in the 1930s, Edward was widely-considered to be weak and a bit of a bounder because he wasn't up to doing his duty, which was considered a much more important thing than personal happiness. Harry would never have been in this position if Edward VIII had remained as King, because the younger brother George (the Queen's father) wouldn't have had to step into his shoes. No Queen (she'd have just been another Royal princess), no Charles as the next King, no "senior" Royals in that branch of the family.

Since Victoria, the monarchy has been holding firm on the "old values" (at least in public). However, access to information about them can't really be controlled anymore, and people now know a lot more about the parts of their lives they'd probably prefer to keep hidden (like the excruciatingly-embarrassing private conversations between Charles and Camilla). Things were bound to fall apart sooner or later. I think if the Queen hadn't been so long-lived, it would have changed before now.

I find this outrageous.
Not even surprised, he previously described her as uppity for having the temerity to ask not to be photographed by an overly intrusive spectator at Wimbledon. The treatment she's received from the media paints them in such a poor light. I'm looking forward to these dinosaurs fade into obscurity.

I had no idea the term royalists existed! Met plenty of people that quite like the royal family, probably more from other commenwealth countries than here...but I didn't know people had such a deep emotional investment in the idea. Weirdos
Knew it existed but didn't know people cared as much as they did. Saw someone say on twitter they don't need to know someone to dislike them. Someone obviously responded with okay then, what has Meghan done to make you dislike her? What was the rebuttal? Well I know I hate Ian Huntley without meeting him so I can hate Meghan too without meeting her, I just don't like her.

fecking loony bins. It's disgusting the treatment she receives.

At first I thought they're doing a brave thing by living completely independently but turns out they just want the benefit of Hollywood and royalty at the same time

Thanks Eamonn for that insight, you stupid fat prick.
I was going to say something similar but yours is much more to the point.

I mean it is kinda crazy that Prince Harry is currently getting more heat for stepping down than Prince Andrew for his links to a convicted nonce!
The establishment will always look after its own.

Think Piers Morgan wins that hands down.

Yes, he was that as well, wooed by the Nazis and he was happy to go along with it. Of course, the Royals had to change their surname from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor, because the former didn't sound so good during the First World War. :)

Anyone that believes racism doesn't play is a role is a mug.
This whole shambles has been an eye opener about this country. It's disgusting.
As someone said, the queen, Charles and William watched the media chase a woman of colour out of the royal family and never...never uttered a word. Feck the lot of them.

Unpopular opinion on here, but I just don't see it like this at all, not sure many sane people do either.

Racism is hardly ever in plain sight.
Were you expecting the newspapers to call her insults just so you can ‘see’ the underlying racism at play?
What would it take for you to see racism?

Continue to call the PoC who recognise her treatment as exactly what it is, not ‘sane’ though - we experience it continually, and our voices continue to be unheard because of attitudes like this.

EXCLUSIVE: Harry’s girl is (almost) straight outta Compton: Gang-scarred home of her mother revealed – so will he be dropping by for tea?”

“from slaves to royalty, Meghan Markle’s upwardly mobile family.”

Journalist Rachel Johnson, the sister of British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, once wrote in The Mail on Sunday newspaper that Markle could help bring "rich and exotic DNA" to the royal family. She also described Markle’s mother as "a dreadlocked African-American lady from the wrong side of the tracks."

No racism what so ever here
