I have a Chinese colleague who is the nicest person you can imagine, and I felt really sad for her when she told me that in the metro everyone is staring at her, like being afraid from her. And she has not been in China for half a year or so.

Jokingly, I proposed to her to put the sanitary mask so everyone loses its shit.
What a funny story.

At Manchester Uni there's loads of them with face masks on, but then again they do that at normal times! Good sanitation is the first line of defence, something china doesn't seem to have got the hang of yet.

Apparently more effective than face masks is learning not to touch your face, eyes, nose, mouth with your hands. That's me fecked, I'm permanently chewing my nails, picking my nose, straightening my glasses, I don't think I can stop it.

As for face masks, a Japanese person I know says they wear them when they've got a cold themselves so as not to infect others, rather than wear them to avoid becoming infected. @marukumo will know if that's true.

This is definitely true. Its more of a consideration thing to not infect other people rather than a worry about getting sick yourself necessarily. In China, there's the added problem of pollution in some of the big cities.

Some women also wear them as a 'defence' against being bothered while they're out and about.

My glasses seem to get filthy within about 5 minutes of cleaning them, very annoying.

Have to say this makes me a lot more uncomfortable with using the street markets here where chickens basically walk into cleavers.

Although I only ever bought fruits and vegetables, never meat.

Which makes perfect sense, it's a bit odd that we in the west don't do this to be honest.

Wonder if it would actually spread quicker through the likes of London because of this. The tube is a biohazard at the best of times.

I'm posting this sitting 1m away from my colleague who came back from China last week. No idea why people need to be so racist about this.

Coronavirus can be treated by cow urine, dung: Hindu Mahasabha president

As the coronavirus scare runs across the world with one confirmed case in India, Hindu Mahasabha has proposed bizarre treatment for the dreaded virus infection. Swami Chakrapani Maharaj, president of Hindu Mahasabha, on Friday said cow urine and cow dung can be used for treating novel coronavirus disease. He also said that a special yagna will be performed to "kill the novel coronavirus and end its effects on the world".

"Consuming cow urine and cow dung will stop the effect of infectious coronavirus. A person who chants Om Namah Shivay and applies cow dung on body, will be saved. A special yagna ritual will soon be performed to kill coronavirus," said Chakrapani.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the new coronavirus outbreak a global health emergency after the death toll in China rose to 213 on Friday, with 9,692 confirmed cases in the country's 31 provincial-level regions.

An Air India flight service will evacuate Indians stuck in the city Wuhan due to the outbreak of the virus.

The new virus, which is of the same genre as SARS which broke out in 2003, was first reported in the WHO Disease Outbreak News on January 5, 2020.

It has progressively spread across many countries from its epicentre in Wuhan.

UK driving the people from wuhan to a quarantine via bus. Everyone wearing virus protection apart from bus drivers, who were told that they’d be fine because the people were “at the back of the bus”

Officially up to around 12,000 cases, 259 deaths now.

That's big enough, but then things like this continue to circulate:
