I’m sorry but Brits have the most tasteless press I can think of. Absolutely classless to publish the photo and name of this poor guy.

"Super-spreader" is actually a scientific term from what I gather, these virology nerds keep using it when looking at past SARS examples where one person infected like 10+ people compared to the average of 2.

So did this guy go round snogging everyone or what? He's been carrying this virus for weeks, not even had a cough, and infected 11 people?

One of the worries seem to be that most people will only get mild symptoms not much different to the common cold, therefore they won't go to hospital won't take the neccessary precautions to avoid it spreading. Once spread the next person might not have it so easy and develop sever symptoms / pneumonia. Jury is still out on whether it is asymptomatic.
Yeah. I've come out with a cold today. Not exactly going to rock up at the GP or A&E and ask to be tested for this shit.

I'm amazed at how relaxed people are about this. Seriously worrying that the Chinese felt the need to build a hospital in eight days and then other countries to close borders within two weeks.

The true number will be far more than the 900+ quoted.
They did the same for SARS (Hospital build).

I still maintain that these indicators that happened several weeks back are red lights;

- McDonalds closing
- Starbucks closing
- Disney closing
- All Cinemas being closed

Western companies shutting up shop, areas that see hundreds of people gather, closed within days.... if that happened in England the entire world would freak out. It’s being treated as normal.

Imagine the UK closing down Starbucks and McDonalds just in Birmingham. A global community of journos would descend. Instantly.

cnuts, yes. Extreme, no. That is the most popular paper in the Uk.
You could help by not linking though. If this site banned all Daily Mail links it would be a better place.

It trades off respectability earned decades ago. At one time they were Right wing but ethical. They now run a low-iq click bait farm that’s far below Something like Buzzfeed at this point.

My friend worked there. They have extensive AI pre-creation. The ‘journos’ there are tasked to write stories that MUST mention provided words. The offices are awful. Nothing is good there.

It’s not a news site. It’s an entertainment site that trades in lies. Nobody should read it.

Burn the Coronavirus super-spreader!
As per my previous : This site should not carry Daily Mail articles. By doing so, we are enabling their behaviour and supporting the people in the comment section.

If anyone can send me a Mail article that broke needful news before another outlet I’d eat my hat.

Not really sure how you can stop it unless everybody just stops for 2 weeks and doesn't go anywhere.

The fact you can be infected but not show symptoms for over a week is very difficult to stop. Thank god it's not more lethal - but I do suspect eventually a virus of this kind will be the main reason for wiping out the human race.

Presume that is up to the mods whether to ban it due to it’s extremist views but where do you stop?

It's a national newspaper, so we're unlikely to ban it, and I think 'extremist' is a bit of a stretch. 'Repellant' yes.

I've said before- it's personal finance section is generally good, it's the main news and celebrity guff that is horrendous. I know three people there and they're all left-leaning, just doing a job.

Not very effective if you can catch it by touching an infected surface area. Also you'd need goggles as well. I mean I don't want to catch it but I also don't want to look like a dick so there's a trade off to be made somewhere.
Eh? You have to get it in your lungs, is what I've read.

It depends on how people define ‘extreme’. Popularity shouldn’t really be a deciding factor in assessment

Well said. I personally wouldn’t ban it (though no tears would be shed) but it’s an absolutely awful paper.

The wife and I have a 13 hour flight to Singapore next week and my father-in-law is adamant we have to wear masks the whole time- bearing in mind all we can get are the crappy paper dust ones that won't stop the virus anyway. Fine line between being cavalier and overboard about it.

Hmmm, I'd read handshakes were a no/no but I wonder if that was in the event that people are touching their mouths or nose afterwards.

CDC tallies with what you're saying but they still emphasise that much is unknown.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/about/transmission.html

I think the main bone of contention will be how long it can live on surfaces etc...Masks will keep it directly out of your lungs but unless you're constantly washing your hands after touching anything in public it can only delay the inevitable. Like I said you'd still need goggles to keep your eyes covered too.

Christ, looks a bit much. It only talks about gas, but I guess if it can block that, it will stop all other virusy particles?
As far as I'm aware, P3 filters stop viruses too, the plastic of the mask moulds to your face properly. I've actually already got one from when I dropped a ceiling in an old Victorian house, it was like breathing in normal air in an incredibly dusty environment.

You could go for the nuclear option

I've read that if you don't have the virus, wearing masks is not necessary. On the contrary, you're more likely to touch your face more often whilst wearing one and droplets of mucous that carry the virus are more likely to get stuck in your airways and get carried down all the way to the receptors deep in your lungs. There is an article somewhere on BBC about it. I'd find it and show it to your father-in-law and let him see for himself that it might be counterproductive.

Just bought one. All the disposable masks on Amazon are shitty, overpriced and many people are receiving 5 or 10 when they ordered 50. Most of them are also saying an estimated delivery date of March or April. This plastic mask is only £20 so it won't kill me, unlike the coronavirus which might.

The P3 sounds good, but not clear how long the filters last- filters seem to cost more than the unit. Missus seems content with the shitty disposable ones we are meant to have coming.

:lol:Might as well go for a full on hazmat suit and freak out all of the passengers on the plane.

The crappy ones don't do much anyway but if it makes the father-in-law feel better its probably worth it.

Cheers- the touching the mask a lot makes sense as I'd be self-conscious in it. The father-in-law is an ex-radiographer and never sure if his wider medical knowledge is as accurate as he makes out.

The ones they use in hospitals are fitted to the face. The crappy ones they use in construction work create very little seal and let stuff in basically. If you ever used one in DIY work or whatever you know they just make you sweaty and still get a lot of crap up your nose etc.

Feck it then. Are the people in the hardcore masks not going to eat or drink anything on the plane? I'll see what we can get over there.

I'm in the process of shitting out my insides ahead of my colonoscopy tomorrow, so my immediate concerns are on other orifices tbh.

I'd look for a nice doughnut cushion before a facemask if I were you.

This is dumb. Why are they stuck on a ship where conditions would be ideal for the virus to spread? A confined area packed with people. And now that there is at least one person infected, what difference does it make to quarantine them on a boat or elsewhere?
The cynic in me might think that they're using the cruise ship as some kind of lab test to see how long it takes for the symptoms to show, how contagious it is and ultimately how fatal.

That reminds me, we have one from when my missus bruised her tailbone. The second liquid concoction is at 6pm, so it's going to get violent shortly.

The in-laws did talk about going to Melbourne and Sydney via Perth instead of Singapore, but it will cost a bomb and the missus needs to work in her company's Singapore office for a couple of days. It's a whole three week trip with non-refundable hotels, so fingers crossed.
