There's money to be made in conspiricy theries nowadays and we all know how fked up the world's media is, so public opinion is always going to go a bit daft with something like this.

Viruses mutate and spread between mammals all the time, humans are a mammal like any other and equally guilty of spreading things to and killing other mammals. Some viruses live in harmony with their host, others cause mayhem.

Characteristics of viruses and the diseases they cause can be very different but there doesn't appear to be anything all that new with this one. It is much less deadlier than something like Ebola, but spreads easier, similar to the likes of Influenza.

There is nothing new here, this has happened throughout time, in the past a deadly virus might just wipe out a village though and that'd be the end of it. Our incredible transport links make that impossible nowadays. We are much more clued up on viruses nowadays too, which provides extra fuel for the news, even compared to 20 years ago.

China seems to have been completely open with their data releases about this virus, the scientific community seems to think so anyway. They published the complete genome sequence of it on 9th Jan.
Many in China seem to believe the government are with holding certain statistics. Didn't Iran recently do the same?

All our business trips to areas at risk have been cancelled, meetings are suspended, people who have recently been skiing in the north of Italy or have been to Veneto/Lombardia are advised to stay at home for at least two weeks, ... Starting to get real now, it seems.

Also, you have a virus that seems persistent on wiping out the older generation.
Which means the most rabid Brexiteers might never see a Britain free from the yoke of EU oppression. Shame.

Surprise 2nd referendum this time next year?

Nah that's just because nobody wants to hear about their holiday in February.

Indeed.

And also, believing the virus is man-made / leaked accidentally from Wuhan's bio lab IS NOT the same thing as believing that China 'did it on purpose' ffs!
I don’t even believe it’s man made. I believe it’s been extracted from an animal, likely a bat, for research purposes but somehow it’s got out

I don’t know about others but I’m no way suggesting that they did it on purpose!

I don’t find my personal theory so far out there, accidents happen and we know that China are a face saving country so are secretive. It’s not so far fetched to assume there may have been an accidental leak from the lab

This thread is starting to sound like the premise for a Resident Evil storyline.

They have 100% been withholding statistics.

For example, they told the US government that the transmission is human to human whilst they were still keeping this fact/ denying it in their own population.

And no worries re. the earlier post!

@Rhyme Animal I am not a scientist per se but as far as I understand it, this strain of the coronavirus is simply in the same family as MERS and SARS. It isn't a wholly new structure but a cousin if you will of the others. Doesn't mean it can't be manufactured of course but its a pretty standard virus.

The statistics dont' include all cases, that is fact but I don't think it is through the Government witholding them. They have been clear that the published case numbers come from proper tests carried out by medical professionals with the neccessary equipment. That is the only proper way to report confirmed cases, there will undoubedly be many unconfirmed cases that haven't gone to hospital because of mild symptoms. The spike on 12th Feb was from them including clinical diagnosis (doctor opinion) in the case numbers, they have since withdrawn this method as it leaves the stats open to incorrect diagnosis, one the reasons new cases has dropped off.

Iran is a whole other matter entirely.

Sad to hear that. I'm sure exhaustion played a part in her death. RIP.

Also BBC reporting that virus is spreading faster than in China. I guess, draconian measures were needed to contain this -- would never happen in Europe -- welding the doors shut to an apartment block.

So 3 of my friends have now mentioned that people in their offices have been sent home with symptoms, all in London.

Great. Won't be long before we're all getting it then! No doubt they all took the tube in this morning. Imagine being next to somebody coughing and spluttering with their mouth right next to you. Lovely stuff.

Reading this thread this morning I started to get a bit of a sore throat, a need to blow my nose and then cough. But I feel better now.

I'm tending to want to believe that whatever this virus is that it doesn't appear to be coming close to the infection/death rates that the Influenza Pandemic at the end of WWI achieved. I have a suppressed Immune System, so I have to be sensible but not panic, yet.

I think this pandemic is going to be something unprecedented as most health care systems won't be able to cope. I was in Russia earlier this month, a person with symptoms showed up to a hospital and doctors and nurses wouldn't go near him. They literally all ran away from him and when he did get talking to a doctor, the doctor locked himself in his office and spoke through the door. I mean some countries like UK will be under prepared because they don't have the mobilisation of man power and infrastructure and other are going to just sweep it under the carpet and hope it goes away like Iran, Russia etc.

nah, it's not rational. people can believe whatever they want, but doesn't make it rational.
How is it not rational? You can think it came from somewhere else but I don’t understand why it would be dismissed with such surety.

Cant help but be so angry that the rest of the world are having to pay for China's stupid eating habits and it also goes to show that when you see these debates between vegans and meat eaters on tv/youtube about eating meat and a meat eater responds with I'm not doing anyone any harm eating meat, it's obviously not true is it really with a lot of the major viruses over the past few decades originating from the meat trade.

In danger of? We have people suggesting China is trying to start a war by infecting it’s own people, for feck sakes.
Lets look at this way:

China wants to start a war however, in this case, they don't fancy making it obvious. So they develop a bio weapon capable of wiping out a fairly large proportion of people. One that spreads rapidly and does so without showing any signs of infection.

How does one spread such a weapon? Maybe an accident in their own country. I mean could you imagine travelling across the world with a bioweapon at hand. Yeah, don't think the USA or any country would allow that. At some point, there will be casualities - if China were to initiate an open war, then they may get invaded and people will die. So why not just infect their own, create enough drama and doubt that no one would believe that this could ever have been a man made weapon. Like you say, why start a war by infecting your own?

Eventually the virus spreads across the entire world - which it effectively has, killing thousands along the way.

The last war began when a bunch of mad men flew a plane into a building. You are acting as if there are sensible ways to start the mass murder of innocent people.

That said, I don't really believe that China would do this.

There’s so many fundamental flaws with this theory. I’m just going to leave it that.

In the spirit of the last few pages of this thread. :wenger:

That book goes on to say that the virus would break out in the year 2020. Close enough.

Surely if its Canary Wharf, London should be quarantined. It will spread like wild fire through the underground.

Some advice there. Maybe it's worth pinning it or something.
