Playing behind closed doors is the only solution, these measures have to be taken now before things get wildly out of control. Absolutely brutal for Liverpool and their fans winning the league in an empty stadium.
Don't give a damn, public health is more important. 20-50k people in close contact for 2-3 hours? It's asking for trouble. You just need one cluster to start for it to go exponential really quick. Look at South Korea, where one woman spread to a few hundred people, and now they have several thousands of cases.

Yeah. What's the point in waiting for it to inevitably get worse when you can start doing something to try and slow it down now? It's not about football, it's about giving the NHS the chance to cope with it as best they can. Although it is also about Liverpool having to win it in an empty stadium.

And that seems like wishful thinking on your part. The season probably won't be cancelled i agree with you there, but if it were no way could the current standings count without all teams having played 38 games home/away.
Precisely. The rules are every team plays every other home and away.

if Liverpool were to be awarded a trophy because the fans as is likely kick off, it would be extremely hollow and could not be considered legitimate.

When a team wins league it should be won by the team with the most points over 38 games.

Where the grass is greener.
The smart thing in England would be to follow Italys lead now, not in 2 weeks when it reaches the current levels in Italy. China locked down whole regions and their cases are going down.
Yep. If there was any sense in this country we'd get ahead of it now instead of being forced to play catchup later.

No chance of it being suspended. Surprised to see Serie A suspended, surely just play behind closed doors.
It’s quite odd all of this though, even people talking about Premier League games being played behind closed doors.

For instance approximately 12 million people are using London transport on a daily basis. Not to mention all the bars, night clubs and supermarkets, approximately 5-10 million people attend a supermarket a week. There’s been no serious consideration of shutting these places down.
Like I get the logistics of shutting down the tube are far greater than that of shutting down the premier league.
But seriously if we’re talking health reasons and containment as the factor here what’s the fecking point making a thing out of keeping people away from football when hundreds of millions of people are strolling in and out of trains and buses, Asda’s and Sainsbury’s every week.
If we’re gonna shut things down, do it properly, don’t pick and choose.

I can't remember why I joined this war.
The decision would come from higher up. If it gets as bad as Italy then I think there will be a lot of pressure to suspend it.
Okay, you might be right, just read that Serie A is pretty much canceled until 4th April. So yeah, will be interesting to see how this is going.

Imo it's a gross overreaction and it won't get rid of covid-19. If you wanted to really get rid of it you would have to quarantine the entire population of earth for like 2 weeks or however long it takes for the virus not to die out. I think the only solution is that we have to get used to it like we did to people dying from the flu or pneumonia and hope there will be medication in the near future to bring the death rate down.

If there's no football to be played involving Italian teams then surely the champions league and europa league will have to be cancelled.

In addition to playing behind closed doors, we should just have the players and referee there. No cameramen or commentators. No point in putting more lives at risk than is needed.

Thousands upon thousands of people in a stadium, and we all know that football stadiums are built for capacity for not comfort, watching 22 people not shaking hands for health reasons.

Effing madness, you can't get a little bit pregnant.

Either shit or get off the pot, there's a lot of 'being see to do something' going on. In a country of 65-70 million, hundreds have been infected, if you put that into a calculator you get one of those weird numbers that start with 'e-', either it's all balls, or we aren't being told something. 24 hour news has a lot to answer for.

From an A&E consultant who is currently in northern Italy:

I feel the pressure to give you a quick personal update about what is happening in Italy, and also give some quick direct advice about what you should do.

First, Lumbardy is the most developed region in Italy and it has a extraordinary good healthcare, I have worked in Italy, UK and Aus and don’t make the mistake to think that what is happening is happening in a 3rd world country.

The current situation is difficult to imagine and numbers do not explain things at all. Our hospitals are overwhelmed by Covid-19, they are running 200% capacity

We’ve stopped all routine, all ORs have been converted to ITUs and they are now diverting or not treating all other emergencies like trauma or strokes. There are hundreds of pts with severe resp failure and many of them do not have access to anything above a reservoir mask.

Patients above 65 or younger with comorbidities are not even assessed by ITU, I am not saying not tubed, I’m saying not assessed and no ITU staff attends when they arrest. Staff are working as much as they can but they are starting to get sick and are emotionally overwhelmed.

My friends call me in tears because they see people dying in front of them and they con only offer some oxygen. Ortho and pathologists are being given a leaflet and sent to see patients on NIV. PLEASE STOP, READ THIS AGAIN AND THINK.

We have seen the same pattern in different areas a week apart, and there is no reason that in a few weeks it won’t be the same everywhere, this is the pattern:

1)A few positive cases, first mild measures, people are told to avoid ED but still hang out in groups, everyone says not to panick
2)Some moderate resp failures and a few severe ones that need tube, but regular access to ED is significantly reduced so everything looks great
3)Tons of patients with moderate resp failure, that overtime deteriorate to saturate ICUs first, then NIVs, then CPAP hoods, then even O2.
4)Staff gets sick so it gets difficult to cover for shifts, mortality spikes also from all other causes that can’t be treated properly.

Everything about how to treat them is online but the only things that will make a difference are: do not be afraid of massively strict measures to keep people safe,

if governments won’t do this at least keep your family safe, your loved ones with history of cancer or diabetes or any transplant will not be tubed if they need it even if they are young. By safe I mean YOU do not attend them and YOU decide who does and YOU teach them how to.

Another typical attitude is read and listen to people saying things like this and think “that’s bad dude” and then go out for dinner because you think you’ll be safe.

We have seen it, you won’t be if you don’t take it seriously. I really hope it won’t be as bad as here but prepare.

Crazy, and terrifying.

Reading that, I wonder if Italy's fatalities are actually higher than stated?

You would think that’s very possible. Sounds like their health system just can’t cope.

Confirmed cases:

25/2/2020: Italy 320; UK 12

9/3/2020: Italy >7,000; UK 319

Italy don’t have more cases. They’re just two weeks ahead of us.
I think we’re going to get a sudden spike here and that will have major implications for everyday life. Re football, it’s hard to see how it doesn’t get seriously affected very soon.

Should City lose to Arsenal, the bitters will be praying for next Monday to be played behind closed doors. If not they'll bring the own fecking padlocks just to make sure.
The irony is if that scenario does occur and there's every chance, there might be no one in the stadium but there will be thousands of Liverpool fans outside the stadium celebrating, hugging embracing etc. Defeats the object really.
Oh and trying to stop such a large gathering ain't going to happen if they win it next Monday at Goodison.

Surely it's about trying to prevent passage from different areas though by restricting the amount of travelling from place to place?

If Corona hasn't hit Southampton yet (as an example), then having a massive amount of people go and visit London for a game of football, travelling through the tube etc means that you're effectively transporting the virus to Southampton via 20,000 odd people.

If the Premier League is suspended it does need to be all sporting events across the country and serious consideration needs to be applied to suspending trains. It's a difficult situation though because it seems impossible to quarantine the UK due to sheer quantity of roads, you'd probably need to get the army/police involved and have checkpoints on every road leading out of a county border if you're doing it properly. We're clearly not at that point yet, but if it gets to the point of being as badly hit as Italy has been then it might need considering.

Surely the reports coming out of Italy right now should be a huge reality check to our Government and we should be taking measure immediately.

This is based on a tweet that Neville posted, but it raised an interesting point for me. It’s all well and good saying that the PL should play behind closed doors, because these clubs get most of their money from TV deals.

On the other hand, what happens as you go further down the leagues, to the smaller clubs where match day revenue is a significant part of their functioning. Isnt there the chance this could end up being disastrous for some of those clubs?

In such a situation suspending all matches may make more sense, no?

Either do it right or don't do it at all then - you have people flying into London from Milan or wherever who aren't even checked and they can be on the London subway two hours later. You still have public transport going on between Soton and London anyway with loads of people on them. I agree that restricting it should help the matter, but do it altogether then and suspend all transport between major hubs.

Suspending PL games would just be a plaster on a wooden leg (if that's even an expression in English ).

Welcome to globalization & open borders. All the greedy politicians & establishment care about is money, money, money, & couldn't care a toss to its citizens. The ironic part is once the country closes down, all that will be gone with the wind.

As for Champions League. Of course it should end, particularly as the whole of Italy has closed down. Like the politicians all UEFA care about is pieces of silver, not the fans. Likewise with those greed merchants with their beloved cash cow known as the Olympics. End it now.

This will in all likelihood get much worse before it gets better.

OK its the Mail, but ther are running a story sayonh, PL could be streamed for free and the 3pm blackout stopped, if games are to be played behind closed doors.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...streamed-free-charge-played-closed-doors.html
Could make sense financially and practically. Viewing figures could would be up in the millions and would be prime advertising slots which could be used to compensate clubs. It would also encourage amateur leagues to postpone their matches which can only be a good thing right now.

The financial world is geared towards panic. Imagine what will happen to the markets if a few nuclear bombs destroy a big city. Or an earthquake. It is all so precariously balanced... Sentiment is what drives the market and it is wafer thin at the moment.

The reason for these drastic measures is not to eliminate the virus completely. The idea is to decrease or mitigate the numbers, cuz otherwise the numbers might be too much and overwhelm any country's Healthcare.

Yes it’s all about striking the right balance between avoiding panic and avoiding complacency. Not easy to do. Hope it doesn’t get too serious in your region mate, sounds like you have enough problems to deal with.

After all the talk in recent months that City should have an asterisk next to all their trophy wins, we could be seeing "Premier League winners 19/20, Liverpool* - *season abandoned due to COVID-19 outbreak" in the near future.

Thanks!

Yeah, most outbreaks have so far been centered in developed countries. According to me it is extremely probable that it will soon begin to multiply in poorer and undeveloped ones. Those with bad medical care, hygiene and general health. That is when the 3% mortality rate will climb alarmingly. It is coming and there is really nothing we can do.

Another poster said the virus should just run its course. I agree. We cannot stop it. All we can do is wait for the vaccine/cure. And watch surreal games in empty stadiums.

Seems like they aren't testing enough. Sounds like they're accepting that they can't accommodate all cases and are just instructing some people to quarantine without testing them.

I don't get it.
Sure, can play behind closed doors to avoid it spreading amongst fans, but what about the players?
Some teams can get their whole team affected by the virus, and the season ruined.
Not only Liverpool, but teams fighting for europe, or against relegation.

As much as i would hate it, they should probably cancel the whole season - and give is CL Next year.
In seriousness, some teams will be more affected than others.

Don't give a damn, public health is more important. 20-50k people in close contact for 2-3 hours? It's asking for trouble. You just need one cluster to start for it to go exponential really quick. Look at South Korea, where one woman spread to a few hundred people, and now they have several thousands of cases.
Agree. The Liverpool thing is a small ray of sunshine in a bleak situation.

Man, this affecting Liverpool in any way would be just too perfect and so Liverpool - cancelling the Prem (seems unlikely), straight up awarding them it (forever tainted), even just having to win it behind closed doors after all this time.

I was going to attend a conference in Prague next weekend and got an email earlier saying the Czech Minstry of Health has prohibited any events with more than 100 participants. Madness to allow football games with fans to go ahead under these circumstances.

How much loss are Utd looking at for another season of no CL? If the season is abandoned then Utd are in Europa again right? Must be quite hefty by now, the financial buffers of earlier failures must surely have expired. Maybe there's a thread on it in the Utd forum. I'll check.

We can still win the EL, don't worry.

I wonder what you will do with your free time when you won't be able to obsess over United after the banhammer is thrown around. :D
