If you want to show someone proof that social distancing works, here's a graph from 1918 comparing the death tolls in St. Louis and Philadelphia.

Shit for Ireland. People will be travelling to US and getting themselves infected.
Ireland, as well as not being in the Schengen area, is the only European country to have US border pre-clearance service. (At Dublin and Shannon)

I understand that. But if person contracts the virus now, gets medical care, recovers from it, surely that's better for them, instead of them getting it when the inevitable peak comes?

I meant for a single individual not as a wave of patients.
Better fet out there and find sime

Only 18 new cases in China today. There is still some hope.
The messed up thing about it is that aside from the obvious extreme measures China has taken - it also comparatively has an extremely small group of international folk moving through its cities. If the west is already not doing what China is doing and we add another factor China barely has to deal with it...how hopeful can we really be?

I really want to tell all these pro-Trump "this is media hysteria" olds on the internet that we are trying to save their goddamn lives here.

My father was supposed to fly from India to the US via Amsterdam (KLM). Guess that's on hold for now..

If it doesnt extend to India or the middle east, will probably get a different ticket..

Question.

China's toll is reducing now. Let's say we get to the stage where we have no new cases in that country for a week.

Is there not the danger that there could be more cases not discovered?

How long will these lockdowns last essentially?

I think there is zero chance that actually we might contain this. That train passed in January.

No idea about lockdowns, but I think (well, speculate) that some semi-quarantine would be for the entire year. Essentially, until we either get some immunity from the virus, or we find ways of fighting it (antivirals or a vaccine).

If dealing with Brexit wasn't bad enough. No expert but this seems like the sort of thing which could put us back into a recession. I don't know how this is going to pan out but the UK seems very relaxed at the moment in terms of we are happy to see this out over a long period. I would have thought based off other countries we would have some sort of lock down by now.

Can't see anything but a worldwide recession at this point.

China can get away with being Draconian and sealing people in their homes because they're essentially an autocracy.

Britain could *possibly* get away with that, because in the main - people are quite law abiding and tend not to make too much of a fuss where authority is concerned.

...but try that shit in the USA, and gun owners will start a civil war.

I had a guy on social media try to make fun of me tonight for pointing out that the history of the 1918 influenza proves that social distancing works...

Him: "Well go run and hide then"

Me: "Well go contract it and spread it to your children and parents and watch them suffer then"

He didn't like that.

Yeah, I've been hearing the same all over. People getting upset at the prospect of bars closing for a few weeks because it's "all overhyped nonsense" - what will it take for these people to take it seriously?

I hate to say it, but presumably when people they know start dying.

We are already in it, business is already slowing down even before Covid-19.

You bet your house it'll get ugly.

On the probably brighter side brand new opportunity might arise from the slowing down of China, if you're lucky with your industry and all. My guessing is that local industries will have to start filling for the gap made by the chinese slowing down and reduced international trades for now.

Not to the same extent but similar things happened when "good Hispanics" were deported.

I know we re far gone in this country but between someone else implying people are gonna start waving guns at docs and people starting a civil war over this seems a little sensationalist. Of course if the end times seem to be coming you could be right but I still believe that generally speaking we re a relatively well behaved country. I think someone pulling a gun because someone took the last big gulp at 7-Eleven seems more likely.

I was talking about if American authorities tried the Chinese approach of welding shut people's doors to prevent them from going outside.

I feel like this already happens even without coronavirus.

Completely with you on that one.

A 65-year-old German tourist tested positive in Northern Cyprus. Perhaps a bit too late for tourists before a certain date to have comprehended how silly it is to travel, but the message should be clear now that people's holidays really aren't that important. Stay home.

Where I live, if/when it hits, this will do ridiculous damage, many families have 5-6-7 kids with other family members living them, entire neighborhood with people living in close proximites, we have a very exposed population. Every year there is malaria killing hundreds of people and this year on top of it, there has been the chikungunya infectious disease too which also personally hit me (with malaria at the same time!) and put me to bed for an entire month.
We really could do without this corona fecking shit.
