It looks like Premier League football will resume at some point next month even if there are sporadic cases of COVID-19 in many clubs. However, organisers will be confronted by this big dilemma if there are several positive cases from one particular club and none from any other. I know it is vile thinking, but what if that team is a title contender, or a top-four contender, or a team battling to avoid relegation? Will that team be forced to play with such a great
handicap?

The German have astounded all those who were sceptical of an early restart of club-football, but the English machinery is certainly not as efficient as theirs. Will "the number of positives" have any bearing on the continuity of the games? Or is the strategy simply to resume the games with a lot of testing and isolation without addressing any "hypothetical" question?

Take into account that these tests are not 100% accurate, and even if all players are healthy, you would still expect a very few to come out positive. Please correct me if I´m wrong.

Well I think they'll just have to treat them as injuries. Clubs also have a responsibility to keep their players in check to ensure they do';t find themselves short of quality when the league resume. A lot of these players were breaking quarantine as we kept reading and now some are coming back infected. When the league resume, which is probably almost a month from now, I'm assuming by then they'll have isolated all the positive cases and all the participating players won't be infected(plus by then the current positive cases would have recovered).

From that point Clubs should start doing their part to endure and remind their players to follow new guidelines of safety to avoid risks of infections when they go home. Get their players to not go party and do things which would increase the likelihood of infection like we've seen during this quarantine with some players.

You mean it is looking good. 8 is such a smaller number.

first it was 6/ 780
then it was 2/980

Those are clearly good signs. That is less than 0.5% being positive.
Tell it to those who tested positive.

Except the fact that injuries aren't contagious.

It's so stupid for something which is considered as entertainment to have a greater priority over something which effects health. Why even risk it? Football is not worth the risk. Just cancel the season and start over when it is safe to do so.

Tbh last 2-3 weeks I've been finding this thread increasingly hysterical, the sheer lengths some of the anti restart brigade are reaching to try and find holes in any and every aspect of football returning is hilarious, from some strange Britians got talent comparison to trying to concuct a sexism storm.
It's absolutely hysterical thread. The fun is trying to figure out who's wumming and who's serious

Why do people want the football to restart so badly?
Surprised you ask this.
I know fans who struggle to deal with a few weeks between the last game of a season and the friendlies!

Some people's whole life is football.

Because its a business for everyone involved, except the fans for many of whom its a personal business. And businesses are restarting everywhere because that's how life moves forward. Every business restarting out there are not dire needs.

As part of a strategy to get crowds back into the stadiums they could distribute these to each spectator approximately half a mile from the stadium.

https://www.keep2m.co.uk

While the sound of a buzzers going off may become a little annoying it could add to the atmosphere. Alternatively they could modify each unit to send a mild electric shock to each spectators testicles.

The economy. No one knows when it will be completely safe.
They are looking to bring back the hospitality sector too. Pubs, Restaurants etc... the govt cannot risk having 100's of thousand people out of a job.

A restart is not looking good. Since they started testing in the PL there have been 8 positive tests. This has happened in a very short period of time.

I suspect there will have to be a two week isolation period before they can even consider contact training let alone starting matches. Talk of getting crowds into stadiums at this point is just a distant dream.
Not sure where you’ve been lately but contact training will be resuming.

also German league had positive tests a week before resuming.

it will restart whether you like it or not

They've simply found out which people have coronavirus out of a population who hadn't been tested until now, and 8 is a surprisingly low number. The Bundesliga went ahead with their restart plans with 10 positive tests.

But the pl keep getting positives that were previously negatives. Did that happen in Germany?

How many poeple have those postives effected in the 3 or 4 day gap in testing

I was unaware the Premier league had yesterday voted to return to contact training. There were reports that 8 tests had so far have come back positive and it wasn't looking good. I note today a further 3 tests have come back positive today.

Given the levels of paranoia about the virus I am pleasantly surprised to see there is now a shift to restarting. It isn't a foregone conclusion but June is now looking a distinct possibility. I am still surprised though. Maybe the lockdown has locked down my mood. Your comment about the German League maybe valid but they seem to be far more strict in their testing and isolation procedures. Dynamo Dresden had a spate of positive tests and quarantined the whole squad for 2 weeks. They had further cases during this period but only isolated those involved. I'm a little surprised the league haven't insisted on the same here.

I'm all for starting and if the players are happy to start then let the games begin.

All players and staff are tested every two to three days. There haven't been any new cases since the beginning of last week when a club's member of staff tested positive.

Yes, that happened.

Just compared that to the first 27 matches of the Bundesliga season and there were 10 / 27.
Not sure if you can take anything away from such a small-ish sample size. Schalke are in horrendous form, Leverkusen suffered a pretty surprising heavy home defeat, RB Leipzig started off slowly (2 draws at home), Dortmund lost (I think) their first home game of the season because it was against Bayern, ...

I mean I do think fans at home games can play their part but you can't take that much away from three gamedays because it could just be luck of the draw. And players from the home team still have the comfort of not having to travel, knowing the surroundings and the changing rooms, stuff like that. The home advantage decreases but still exists imo.

You don't get it, and never did. What's "at times of corona"? When does that end? When there are no infections anymore? For how long? When a vaccine is found? Which might be never? So no fans in attendance ever again?

I'm really done talking to you. We disagree and I think your view is absolutely stupid, likewise for you regarding mine probably. That's fine by me.
Yes

Yeah I’m guessing it’s mostly selfish reasons that people are bored. That’s why I was curious, if anyone could give a reasonable response highlighting reasons I hadn’t thought off. So, we want footballers to take a gamble on their lives so that we can sit at home watching, and then shouting at the tv if they make the smallest error or your name is Jessie lingard

but as someone pointed out it is a football forum

I really do want the games to begin but there are two hurdles to be overcome before any football can be played.

The clubs today are holding a meeting to talk about and vote on any curtailment of the season. I understand this to mean that talk of home advantage in behind closed doors (BCD) games will be considered. That means they are still voting on whether or how last season's games should be played out because the timespan within which the games were meant to be played has expired. I'm not sure but I understand if 6 clubs vote against restarting the season BCD then it won't happen. It will be really interesting to see how this goes as it is key to a restart. There have been reports that certain clubs do not agree with BCD but they did vote to return to limited close contact training yesterday. We'll see if turkeys and Christmas is overlooked in favour of sporting integrity.

So lets say they do vote to restart behind closed. There is still the matter of government allowing games to proceed. This has been discussed but there is no date. Will government allow a restart when another 4 positive tests came back from Mondays testing? Comparisons with the Bundesliga may or may not prove useful but it is a fact the UK's death rate is substantially higher than Germany's.

Hopefully we can sail over these last two hurdles.

I find this really disingenuous. You wouldn't make the same argument with regards to other businesses.

Why have we reopened shopping centres? Because feck old people.
Why have we reopened gyms? Because feck old people.
Why have we reopened bars? Because feck old people.
Why have we reopened museums? Because feck old people.
Why have we reopened hairdressers? Because feck old people.
Why have we reopened restaurants? Because feck old people.
Why have we reopened theatres? Because feck old people.

Nobody would say that. None of the above are essential either but of course we reopen these things because people's livelihoods depend on it and it just wasn't justifyable to keep them shut any longer the way the pandemic has developed. But for some reason it's okay to let football go bust (and @Leroy The Red's brilliant post explained perfectly how restarting the top divisions affects everything down the pyramid). And also keep in mind that footballers (and therefore the rest of society) will be better protected than any of the above due to the rigorous testing they receive.

Exactly. I thought it would have been higher, much higher. Considering it was the first time this huge group was tested and it's in the UK - one of the worst hit countries. Do the families of those eight realise they had openly been around asymptomatic carriers? Are they ok, i.e. not asymptomatic themselves? This is where contact tracing is probably more easily achieved.

Note, I'm still unsure if football should be restarted as I have said many times. But with the management of this virus and the success of the Bundesliga is showing maybe it's doable. If not, I'll take the PPG title.

first of all, where did I say “feck old people”?

secondly, and I agree to an extent that businesses need to stay afloat. But at what cost?
I would actually get behind project restart more IF the PL devised some kind of scheme to help the lower league clubs stay afloat. Look at Harry Kane shirt sponsoring L.O. Brilliant! Loved that. Why can’t the elite PL clubs and players come up with more out of the box ideas? I know some things may fall foul of fairness rules etc but try. It doesn’t have to be huge amounts of money either.

Instead there’s a vibe of the game goes on because there is money at stake for the top league. They aren’t, or don’t appear to be giving much thought to the lower leagues so far. And amongst the fans on the forums I don’t see much about lower clubs either, the odd fan but not many.

then when you throw In the possible health risks to players, I’m not sure it’s absolutely the right action at this stage. Imagine if a high profile young player got sick and died? Let’s say Rashford caught it, it develops because maybe he’s got a heart issue that he’s not aware off, he gets hospitalised, gets worse and eventually dies. Is football worth that? Imagine what that would do to a club, the league and the morale of the nation?

I know I’m being melodramatic but it’s still a possibility that something like that could happen, no matter how slim people think that is

that’s where I’m at. I can’t get behind a plan that’s to protect the finances of the top leagues only. There needs to be an inclusive plan that details all the way down

That's not what it says. There is no specification whether the new positives were the previous negatives, that much isn't clear. The PL statements only announced the number of tests and positive cases.

People are returning back to work. Take a chill pill and calm down.

No one is sending anyone to gamble their lives so other can draw entertainment from that. Christ son of God, the hyperbole is ridiculous with this post.

I can't wait for the season to restart and watch Liverpool lose the title - would be on par with 'The Slip'.
