I really don't get how much of a free ride Ole gets from people who lay into individual players after each game. James wasn't bought for the first XI. He was forced to play quite a lot at the start - not least because we've decided not to have a right winger/forward on our books for years. He did well to begin with, after having a nightmarish summer prior to a huge step-up move. Tactically, when Ole lined up like a small team against bigger sides, James was incredibly valuable. Now Ole has changed the style (and not a moment too soon) James will need to add to his game and adapt, which is fine. He's a squad player and a different option.
Similarly, people went all in on Williams today, who has had a great first season, without which Shaw would probably still be serving up disastrous performances. Williams got a nasty injury last match, rushed back and has one shite game - when all the players bar Bruno perhaps, serve up an absolute nothing performance, in a disjointed side that's somehow meant to get a result, risking playing all the key players 5 minutes after our last game and 5 minutes before our next.
And last match, McTominay, another player who has really had a good season and performed for Ole once he'd rushed back Pogba from injury and lost him again to injury (surprise). Ole did say last summer he didn't feel the need to add to his midfield. Well, Bruno proved how smart that was. Anyhow, McTominay has performed (along with Fred) above expectations through the season, not least when we've set up like a small side against "bigger" sides. He's not played much football since Spurs and he doesn't have a great game, gets slaughtered on here.
Who's next?
