Is Daniel James set to become our best signing since RVP?

Not every young player becomes good. There is no quality at all there, this is a Bebe-like signing.

If he wasn't fast, he would not have been a footballer. Of course, pace is important, and that will give him a decent career and tons of money, but he will be out of EPL very soon.
Sorry you feel that way but its his first season in the premiership. I feel he will improve with time and while his form hasn't been great lately, lets not forget he was our best player at the beginning of the season. To the point where we were relying upon him to win us the points at one stage, due to various injuries in our side.

OGS and the staff will help him to improve. He is a valuable squad player to have. Not everyone needs to turn out into a messi or Ronaldo. We also need players that can come in and do a job.

I totally disagree with everything you said there. Some players just don't become good regardless of the time. Sure, it might be fair to give him time same as we gave to Bebe and Obertan, but it is gonna end the same way. He just lacks most of the attributes to be a decent squad player, let alone more.

I don't think we ever relied on him. He had a decent start when he scored the fourth goal against Chelsea in a match won half an hour became he got in, and then scored another a goa in a draw and another one in a defeat, so he got us a grand total of one point during that period you are claiming that he was our best player and we relied on him to get us points.

James isn't too bad if played on the left, if we bring in 2 new attackers this summer then I'd probably send him out on loan to a PL club - I'm sure there will be a good selection of clubs after him.

When I look at Daniel James' game and think about what the modern player is like, I think he is playing in the wrong position. He would be a great winger in a 4-4-2, but what he looks like to me, is a FB. He loves to run up and down the wing but isn't good at taking players on. If I were him, I'd work on my defensive ability and crossing. Then on a game like today where we are playing a 3-5-2 he could be the wingback and offer something totally different to what AWB has to offer...

This thread title looks absolutely ludicrous.

His games need to be picked a bit more carefully. He's not a game changer at this level, but can do a good job coming on late against weary legs in games with either loads of space, or against weak opponents.
I agree. Wins a lot of free kicks too. I just don't get why he started ahead of Ighalo (a real handful) but then I am not a manager

Yep, once Martial was going to be rested, it seemed very odd not to start Ighalo, who has scored quite a few when given game time.

One thing I never understand about James is why we let him come deep. He should always be in line with the oppositions furthest back defender so we’ve got an over the top out ball.

No-ones going to leave him man on man.

He's got nothing to his game when you take the speed away. His ball control almost makes Lingard look like a Premier League quality player.
Lingard has some nice footwork every once in a blue moon. I have yet to see that with James.

Needs someone to knock the ball over the top for him to chase.

We seem to be obsessed with tippy tappy stuff while being pressed by the opposition. Fred and the like would never be able to find him with a pass over the top.

Needs to work really hard on all aspects of his game. One thing he has to work on is receiving the ball with his back to goal. It can be worked on
At this level his pace isn’t going to be successful as much as in the Championship.

Simply took the league by surprise in the first few months I think. Now teams know what to expect they can neutralise that specific threat, and he doesn't have the talent to workaround it unfortunately.

He has zero technical ability. What is there to improve? Because he needs to basically just become good at football. He'll never be good enough. He is older than Mbappe ffs. This "he's young" shit is nonsense. He's as old as Ronaldo was in 06-07. He's 4 years older than Greenwood who is light years ahead of him.
I thought he was 18 for some reason, it turns out that he’s 22 and turns 23 in a few months.

You're being very generous here. He doesn't have the fundamentals of a professional footballer. I'm sure he will improve but it's a massive long shot to ever foresee him ever being close to the required standard of a Manchester United player, even as a squad player. He's miles off even the banter players like Lingard and Pereira.

If he's still in the EPL in 3 years I'll be very very surprised. Lower league kick and rush merchant written all over him.

Phil Jones and Dan James, the greatest players in United's history.

I'd get rid.
Ah, major solution for every player in United. And coaches. And everything.

What is actually wrong with people? Yep, he’s not the best player in the squad, but he’s trying, he was bought as a project, and he’ll improve.

Some really unpleasant malicious posters on this forum.

Still think he's a decent signing and love his attitude. Just that his skill set means he's suited for certain games/situations, and one of those definitely isn't playing with your back to goal against Chelsea while getting passed the ball 3 times a half.

I'm not convinced he'll be good enough in the long term, but we signed him from Swansea to develop him, and it's still his first season. He runs his guts out, has made a big difference in a lot of games for us, and helped us through a really difficult start to the season. He's actually had good games against the likes of City and Liverpool where we've used him to his strengths.

I don't understand people really. Lingard isn't playing so the forum needs a new target I guess.

Agree.
People on here expect players to come in and give man of the match performances.
The guy has hardly played for 4 months.

If James hadn't been an automatic starter at RW for around 3/4 of the season, I think the sentiment of the Caf would be far more lenient. That James is incredibly underdeveloped at this level, and has been a first team player for so long is an indictment on Ole and the staff. It's not James' fault, but if he's a development project then his minutes should have been sporadic from the very beginning.

I think they probably didn't account for Martial and Rashford both being injured for lengthly periods or Lingard offering so little.

I agree it was a mistake on the management's part, and I think Greenwood has bailed them out a bit by doing more than anyone could reasonably have expected, but in fairness it's not like the answer was here. Lukaku wanted to leave at all costs and Sanchez wasn't exactly producing, and that meant we were always going to be short.

James has done well in the circumstances, for me. He's been in poor form for a while but that happens with players his age. At the start of the season he could easily have crumbled but he actually stood up to be counted when the team was really struggling. He's not a veterin he's a young player who until this season had never played a minute of Premiership football.

Couldn’t have said it better. People have really short memories. If he can get back to his initial level of form then we have a good squad option for not a lot of money. He may not make it here at the end of the day but we aren’t going to lose money on him or anything. He’s won us more points this season than other squad members and bought himself some more time to develop. I do think someone like Bowen would have been a more interesting squad option but it is what it is.

James for the price I think was well worth the punt. I was moaning at the start of the season that we'd left ourselves too short in the attacking positions and to be honest James stepped up more than i thought he would at that pointm and it still didn't really mask the problem.

I still think he could develop into a good squad player...maybe more as he's still very young but that would mean him pushing on a level or two. Young players with a good attitude and who offer something different are always worth a risk imo.

he seems like a good guy who’s been through a lot recently. He has a good attitude which should see him in good stead if he really has the talent. We can’t lose anyway. He’s cheap and he’s always in the shop window if it doesn’t work out in the end. I’m Looking forward to seeing how he does next year and how our signings will affect his place is the squad. I reckon James will fight hard for his place here and there’s still a chance he’ll kick on and get better.

Totally agree. I use the ignore posters function and blacklist all incompetent haters (haters most often are). They rarely bring something interesting views, only Ole out and player harassment.
After adding up the 20-30 worst haters CAF becomes a much more likable place.

This is the most embarrassing knee jerk thread I've ever seen on here.

But he still has the right attitude to come good. He just can't seem to find a final ball to save his life.

He can still become a useful squad player.
Could be. That’s a long shot. Right now he needs consistent game time, playing in week in week out, to massively improve. If we think he has potential he needs to be loaned out to a lower level premier or championship side. Brentford might be a good option for him.

I think hyperbole after a loss is commonplace on the caf, but taking the over exaggerations with a pinch of salt you can deduce a fairly reasonable overview on the state of said subjects, that this was a cheap gamble, especially when his fee is amortised over his contract that hasn’t worked out. No hard feelings, he’s just not diverse enough in talent to be an asset. He has pace but that is it, works hard but would struggle to make the 23 man squad for the PL at City and Liverpool — where we aspire to be. The notion that time fixes fundamental gaps in ability doesn’t wash with me, those with fantastic talent can utilise their assets in other areas of the game, to me James is lacking in that department which is nothing to be personally attacked about like some fans would choose to do.

I’m sure he will stick around for a couple of years whilst we move on similar players on higher wages that are surplus to requirements, but I cannot see a meaningful top level career for Dan. Hope to see him get some consistent game time and establish a career in the PL!

Never considered a loan but you're right, if he us to improve he will need a lot of playing time and he isn't of that caliber yet to do so with us.

Losing to Comeback Winning!
It's like playing Pogba at CDM.
He is consistently less effective there.
But people will say, "it still is in midfield, not much difference, not far from his best CM position."

James is much more effective playing on the left, Ole's favourite Rashford's position.
RW and LW are two different positions.
"But but it's just playing on the wing, just different side."

It's different. You won't get it.

I really don't get how much of a free ride Ole gets from people who lay into individual players after each game. James wasn't bought for the first XI. He was forced to play quite a lot at the start - not least because we've decided not to have a right winger/forward on our books for years. He did well to begin with, after having a nightmarish summer prior to a huge step-up move. Tactically, when Ole lined up like a small team against bigger sides, James was incredibly valuable. Now Ole has changed the style (and not a moment too soon) James will need to add to his game and adapt, which is fine. He's a squad player and a different option.

Similarly, people went all in on Williams today, who has had a great first season, without which Shaw would probably still be serving up disastrous performances. Williams got a nasty injury last match, rushed back and has one shite game - when all the players bar Bruno perhaps, serve up an absolute nothing performance, in a disjointed side that's somehow meant to get a result, risking playing all the key players 5 minutes after our last game and 5 minutes before our next.

And last match, McTominay, another player who has really had a good season and performed for Ole once he'd rushed back Pogba from injury and lost him again to injury (surprise). Ole did say last summer he didn't feel the need to add to his midfield. Well, Bruno proved how smart that was. Anyhow, McTominay has performed (along with Fred) above expectations through the season, not least when we've set up like a small side against "bigger" sides. He's not played much football since Spurs and he doesn't have a great game, gets slaughtered on here.

Who's next?
