If people found out he lied about that the consequences would be much more severe than they would be for getting into a drunken fight on holiday.
The timing of events would make this something they concocted on the plane over there, you know, just in case.

If we get in a fight, you act like you got drugged and we...

Just doesn't seem to fit the man, from all accounts.

Not that I'm saying anything either way, but way too many people are judging his character based on not much really and then saying that it seems out of character for him. Were John Terry or Suarez known racists before they said what they said? Was [Irrelevant point] a known drunk driver? Was Cantona known to be violent? You aren't going to be known for doing something until you do it. What comes before doesn't necessarily make it less likely that what happened, happened.

That’s a good point to be honest. Having your sister stabbed with a drug needle by some Albanian gangsters is a fecking far fetched lie if so

Although, he’d still be guilty of the bribing and sounds like he actually did attack/defend himself against some local coppers. I think the belief of his story only clears up the moral aspect.
Again, from my experience with corrupt cops, there are only 2 situations where cops accused someone tried to bribe them:
- when they ask for one and the person didn't give them
- when whatever that person offered them is not enough

Most drugs can be found in hairs up to 90 days after consumption/injection. Rohyphenol (and benzos) can now be detected in urine up to 5 days after it was taken/administered. If she really was drugged, they'll be able to prove it.
It could be pure misunderstanding between the two parties. Brothers, fathers, husbands, boyfriends are usually over protective in nightclubs (and rightly so). Problem I see is some overzealous police officers showing off instead of defusing the matter then and there itself. Once it goes to trial then nothing much can be done. It is his version vs police's version and most of the time in such cases court trusts police unless proven otherwise.

Dodgy as hell. Surely even in serious cases - if there's suspicion of health issues, first the Police let the suspects go to a hospital, follow them here to check it and only then take them to the station?
The only dodgy stuff i gather is from the brisih media spinning this like a fecking dj. Adding the usually bullshit twitter ITK who spits up equally dumb founded fiction

Being abducted in a van? That's maguire and co own chartered van. Instructed by cops to take them to police station, not some abandoned warehouse while maguire instructed them to run from actual cops. Which to be fair he might not now for sure at that time.

Stabbed with sharp object? I'd hazard a guess this was probably nothing like the sort we imagine. Knowing the daily mail if she's stabbed like really stabbed and drugged we'll read alot more bombastic reporting. Yet they're playing with words. Stabbed with sharp object and drew blood? Wtf. If it's true maguire sister was seriously involved any lawyer worth their salt would make a big scene out of it. And if she's injured it'll already be leaked to press with full photos.

Albanian gangster? Drugging a woman in a big group? I mean come on, i dont believe greek is squeaky clean but thinking they're gonna prick and drugged a girl amidst a big fight in view of all her mates? I dont think albanian gangster are that stupid. What about the oppo fans? Where have they gone? Replaced with a more menacing version?

And subjective framing words. Allegedly, lead to believe, according to close source, which changes every fecking day and seems to escalate more and more.

I believe in witness, but if the whole thing is true the whole stuff would be synchronized and told properly. It's wont be "new evidence" on a daily basis. You either get a witness, grab the whole story or you probably made shit up.

Must say it did sound a little like a new Taken movie plot to me when I first read it

Still a lot of unknowns but regardless it's not the most flattering look for the club

If he jumped in for a family member or mate then good on him in my opinion. Some of the members on here basically saying they wouldn't step in for a family member from harm or defend themselves from harm, shame on you.

Yeah, and a good cops will never blow up a story of someone had tried to bribe him, unless he has a very strong evidence, like the money or the voice recording or cctv camera.

Verbally said "How much do you want? I have the money" is very weak weak evidence. It's a rumour.

This whole thing seems to have been blown out of proportion. Seems he has been dragged into something, due to his sister and then some people tried to make an example of him. With the media making it into a much bigger deal than it actually was.

Also how quickly does the Greek court work that they can give a sentence like that so quickly. Just strikes me as something they pushed through to make a statement, than any actual fair legal process.

For United, I don't think we should change anything based on this

Its pure xenophobia . Liverpool fans defending Suarez were not as bad as this . He needs to man up its pretty obvious what happened . He got involved in a drunken brawl by being in the wrong place at the wrong time and is desperately trying to wriggle out of it by concocting one story more absurd than the last one .

Ferguson was going to give Cantona a 4 month ban for the Kung Fu kick. Do you really think Ole will be that harsh?
Why should he. I'm by far Maguire's biggest fan but from the reports so far the incident and the court case were more than questionable. Get him over here, get Fernandes the captaincy and be done with it.

Ole is famous for standing up for his players, and I´d be really surprised if this will have any consequences at United. My money on Maguire being the captain also the coming season (unless he him suggests to pass it to someone else). I can´t see Ole wanting to punish him for this.
He is trying to use money and his Man Utd captaincy to bribe the police, and then found guilty in court for the offense, sure he should at least get some sort of punishment out of that alone?

I was responding to someone who seemed to want Maguire heavily punished by the manager "do what Fergie did for Cantona" would mean giving him a lengthy ban.

I agree with your take on what will happen.

People believing in those twitter rags rather than waiting for the full story to come out really blows my mind. Many here acting like they know what exactly happened and keep calling for Maguire's head is just laughable and pathetic.

People who make claim he is an embarrassment or that he needs to be stripped of his captaincy needs to get a life and realise that there are more important things going on in the world. It doesn’t really matter either way. It’s just football and we are just a football club, it will be forgotten in a couple of days. People so reactionary. Yawn...

Who cares if he's stripped of the captaincy or not, it's close to being meaningless nowadays and armband or no armband, his role and behaviour on-field won't change a jot.

What's more worrying is the impact on his ability to travel to European games, particularly post-brexit.

Let's hope the appeal is successful and we get to hear the full version of his side of events.

If his appeal fails, I think the club might sack him. I'm amazed trying to bribe a policeman is a "minor offence" and is possibly the one that embarrasses United the most. that said, need to wait to hear result of the appeal

All over BBC Breakfast news. They seem to only be interviewing people from Greece who are pretty damning and unmoving from Greece. Interesting that his trial and punishment was meted out after a few days but the Greek 'lawyer' who is being interviewed for the past 10 minutes says a re trial will take 1 -2 years....he seems like an angry guy

the whole thing was weird: trial so quickly, defendant not even needing to be in the country let alone court...

I heard one of the Greek prosecuters on Radio 4 saying that it can still all go away if he apologises. He seemed very angry too.

You really think that United are going to write off an £85m asset over this? Not a chance.

I agree. They might strip him of the captain band, fine him and pull him out of all sponsorship stunts but that will be it.

SAF would have got rid or froze out.
He really wouldn't. If he valued him, like Ole obviously values Maguire, he would've defended him to the hilt. I mean did you even follow United in the Fergie era? The only time Fergie got rid of players in their prime was when they challenged his authority.

Radio 4 just interviewed the prosecuting lawyer and he confirmed that Maquires team didn't even mention the stabbing incident with his sister as a defense. He confirmed it was irrelevant to the assault charge and that the police suffered physical injuries. In Greek law, and probably British Law, retaliating to a previous event is not admissible.
The general consensus from the British legal advisers was that the case was strangely rushed through. Maquires team had asked for more time to put forward their defense after the prosecuting team had come come up with late evidence consisting of verbal accounts by the police. These accounts were taken as being true by the judge and he was found guilty.

The appeal will boil down to the judge deciding if he believes Maguires or the Police's account. No points for guessing who wins that one.

If the incident happened anywhere near how Macguire reported it he has been very hard done by. Sister attempted to be drugged, presumably for rape by Albanian crims. Bar fight ensues and people in plain clothes seemingly join in and bundle them into a van? I think I might have reacted a tad.

The main error of judgement is holidaying in a place where drunken English football fans holiday and then engaging in similar activities. Not victim blaming but the potential for it ending badly are so big that high profile footballers should really avoid such places. If for no other reason but to protect their brand.

I'd be surprised if the context of events is irrelevant in most jurisdictions.

Sir Alex wouldn't have bought him in the first place. If Maguire is valued 80m then how much a young Rio would be valued? He would have gone for someone cheaper and then splash the cash on someone with real talent like Sancho.

Not a chance.

The bribery thing also sounds like trumped up bullshit. The police claim they didn't understand much of what they were saying yet somehow the police were very clear he was offering a bribe and not asking about how much a fine would be? Reasonable doubt anyone?

Even if the Police didn't lay a hand on him beforehand? The Police didn't provoke the assault.

It could possibly be heard in mitigation after a verdict but it seems strange his defense team didn't bother.
