Some QAnon type nonsense being spouted in this thread.
Maybe Harry is undercover because lizard people are using Greece as their base for harvesting fear from kidnapped kids and he'll break them out of the underground base when he returns to serve his sentence using his slab like head to bust through the dungeon walls. Ed Woodward will pilot the getaway plane.

The more I read the posts from British posters on this subject the more I am convinced that the bribery claims are true.
I was literally going to post the same thing.
I think it is true. Maybe not in the exact words as being reported but I do believe Maguire may have said something.
Drunk people say stuff. The Albanian stuff is a bit unbelievable. I also think the Greek courts have probably made this into something far more complex than it needed to be. I mean its a bar scuffle for whatever reason and they happen all the time. If he wasnt famous would there have been a lightning fast court case and conviction for one thing and then the actual speed of the whole process too is just mad.

I did think this would blow over but now I am not sure how Maguire gets out of this one without a club sanction. Not sacked but he may lose the captaincy now. The timing of the England call ups has blown it up even more at home.

Yes they would thousands of people follow the same process for similar cases that are deemed simple, you could go as far as to say that it's a process for nobodies. The fact that he is famous would have been a reason to not use that type of process.

To be fair, I'm not sure what the standard of Policing is like like in Greece to generalise.

However, I would be happy for Harry to go on holiday to the USA, India, Egypt, Pakistan and other such countries and kick the shit out of the police.

There is more chance of Lingard winning the Balon'Dor next season than the club binning a prized asset like Harry Maguire. You just don't throw away 80 million quid.

Also, his "crime" is hardly earth-shattering. I mean, let's face it, men have been bribing their wives since the dawn of time.

Story goes the lads asked the driver to take them to the hospital but the cops told the driver to take them to the police station instead, which he did.
This is the bit that is confusing me. The more I read on here the more confused I am getting. When was he supposedly arrested? Was it at the bar or outside it or at the police station? Why was he at the police station when he wanted to take his sister to the hospital? Why no video evidence, there is probably more of it than we realise? It just doesn't add up.

If his appeal fails, I think the club might sack him. I'm amazed trying to bribe a policeman is a "minor offence" and is possibly the one that embarrasses United the most. that said, need to wait to hear result of the appeal
United are not going to throw away 80 Million.

If you think giving and taking bribes is not normal you should travel more, buddy.

You are putting him in danger, Sultan. In those countries he would get in massive troubles. :nono:

If he should be sacked for anything, it should be for quoting Buddha. I don’t think Buddha got into situations like this...

Yeah, most people in here are judging this by the standards of the police in the country they live

Anyone that has actually had any dealings with the police in some countries will know otherwise - the "law" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere, and there's actually TWO laws. One for the locals and one for you.

I've known people who wore man Utd tops in certain countries to have them "confisticated" by the police (no, not for safety sake).

It was asked by the police as a "gift" to ensure smooth passage on a train. So yeah... I believe Maguire until proven otherwise.

What is the reasoning in sacking him? Even if he did all the bad things he is accused of, can't he benefit from a second chance from people that haven't been directly affected?

Good piece from The Athletic on this
https://theathletic.com/2021530/202...aguire-manchester-united-captaincy-kidnapped/

Relevant bits:

The day started in fractious fashion, as Maguire’s lawyer insisted they had not been permitted adequate time to prepare for the case. The judge swiftly declined their request for an adjournment. This baffled United, who appointed an Athens-based lawyer to support Maguire’s defence. Surprisingly, the charge sheet only arrived at 5pm on Monday, before the evidence, 50 pages long, was made available at 8am on Tuesday morning. This left Maguire’s legal team with only a couple of working hours to prepare the defence before a 10am start.
Maguire rejected that he was involved in a brawl with the allegedly “Albanian” men but accepted there was a confrontation with the men accused of attacking his sister. Undercover plain-clothed police officers then began talking to Maguire’s minibus driver in Greek and ordered the driver to attend the police station.

The station was described by the Maguire brothers and Sharman as an unusual looking building and sources close to the player claimed on Tuesday night that Maguire feared he was being kidnapped. This fear was then heightened, they claim, when eight Greek men, also plain-clothed, abused Maguire at the station, shouting “Your career is over” while kicking his legs. A subsequent medical examination seen by the defence was said to show bruising that supported this account but Maguire’s legal team said they had insufficient time to incorporate forensic evidence into his case.

The three Englishmen still say they did not know at this point the eight men were policemen and therefore resisted being arrested, fearing they were being robbed.
his legal team believe video footage should be available at the police station which will show that the police, rather than Maguire and his friends, were the aggressors. In addition, it is believed that the accused men have some mobile phone footage, which was not allowed to be used in court on Tuesday. This, along with the forensic evidence of the injuries, would greatly enhance their prospects upon appeal.

Apart from in this case everyone who knows him saying he's a straight up guy for whom it would be out of character, and he firmly denies it and the story presented in the press indicating that its not straight forward.

While Suarez is a known cheat who bites people, pulls their hair and insults them to try to win and admitted to saying because you are black for the reason why he kicked Evra but tried to say he was being friendly while also being filmed pinching him a few moments after.

Other than that it's the same.
Obviously some think his sister should have just been raped, just lie back and think of England Daisy, we don't want to cause any trouble. She is his younger sister, he will feel responsible for her, as any good elder brother should. Some are saying Harry caused it all. If those men hadn't done what they had done, we probably wouldn't even know where Harry had gone on holiday. Those men are the cause of all this.

I think that its one hell of a storm in a teacup. I believe that Maguire got involved in a brawl with some local people, the police came in, the locals being locals knew when to let things go so they don't get arrested something Maguire and his mates couldn't possibly know and he got arrested. Once at the police station he tried to make all of this go away by offering money and in doing so he made things worse

Having visited countries where the police are hardly spectacular, the best way to approach these people is to show a great deal of respect. Just say sorry, be cooperative to the ridiculous and make them feel confident with you around. These people are overworked and underpaid. They don't want to fill piles upon piles of paper to keep you there. If they feel that you're a good lad they might be persuaded to let you go. However if you threat them like some sort of dirty cops (even though some might be just that) especially at a police station with plenty of witnesses then they will panic and throw the book at you.

Even if the Police didn't lay a hand on him beforehand? The Police didn't provoke the assault.

It could possibly be heard in mitigation after a verdict but it seems strange his defense team didn't bother.
As I have said over and over, did the police identify themselves as police before they grabbed them after they got out of the van.

That is the central point.

What's more likely an otherwise well regarded person breaks bad and batters some policemen or the plain clothed police failed to identify themselves before they tried to arrest them.

Because they don't like Maguire.

Haven't been following this but 21 months suspended sentence? Jesus Christ.
Don't worry, if Harry apologises they'll drop the whole thing.

Very strange his legal team didn't mention the attempted drugging and date rape of his sister.

Their Lawyer says they did identify themselves. They made statements to this effect.

Genuine question, because I haven't really followed this too closely. What is the evidence that this actually occured?

My brother was "arrested" in Crete when he was weaving back to the apartment from a night out. He got over a wall to take a short cut and he was apparently in someones rather large garden. He paid the cop a "fine" of little over 200euros and was dropped at the gates to our apartment.
Expensive taxi.

It's worth mentioning that while bribing is common in many countries, it's also risky because it's also easy to stumble onto someone that doesn't accept them and take the attempt badly.

Yes I know that. I don't believe them.

The police lie when they have cocked up, its what they do and you would do well to remember that if you ever interact with them.
That also applies to everyone else when they have cocked up, including people that mess up and get into fights after drinking.

They did talk about it in Court, but because it happened in the club/bar it was nothing to do with the "police assault" and bribery that they're getting in trouble for.

It is strange but the court refused them additional time to get their defense together. I'm sure the appeal will be far more interesting. If true the drugging/injecting story may become a little clearer. If true it shouldn't be difficult to identify drugs in his sisters blood.
I'm no legal expert but I suspect there will be no media restrictions on this case because it isn't under British jurisdiction. The media will be all over this until its resolved. No doubt they are already over there trying to find witnesses.

All part of the same event. Doesn't sound like the best legal representation. Then again such a rush to justice also sounds like a kangaroo court.
