Is he any good these days? There was a few posters who tried to convince everyone he was prime Baresi at one point.
I don't believe anyone said he was prime Baresi at any point. But what he is a CB who has the attributes to play in a team that wants to implement high pressure unlike the Elephant we signed for £80m who doesn't suit that style.

Bloody hell, they only want €20M, just pay up and get on with the winger deal.
I think the problem with our bozos who are running the club is that they care too much about their social image and what people think.

People complain that our owners are greedy cnuts and out comes Woody with the "we can do what other clubs can only dream of"

People complaint that other clubs start taking us to the cleaners and we start overpaying, and now the board is haggling for every penny just to show us "see, we're trying to haggle with these clubs, it's just they're unreasonable"

This is a clear example of the second scenario.

As a result our image suffers even more. The other clubs get pissed and as a result signing players becomes even more difficult.

I'd be very surprised if you sold him, I thought he was actually one of your better performers against Palace, though that's not setting the bar too high! Seriously he's a very useful utility player to have in the squad. I'd take him at Brighton in a second.

Pretty much anyone outside the first 14/15 I'd expect to listen to offers for, especially as we're struggling to get rid of the actual complete deadwood.

The amount of time he got at the tail end of last season and starting the 1st of this suggests he might be in your 1st 14-15!

I think 20m is what we want to pay, but there were a fair few reports earlier that seemed to suggest Porto actually want 30-40m.

He's in the last year of his contract, so that would be way too much.

The relative strength of sides in the prem has improved so much though. Pick the starting 11s for most clubs and it's not that straightforward to say guys like those 4 would start for any of them. Then you have to figure in the wages these guys are on and compare them to other players those same clubs could bring in on half the wage or less.

We've lost to pretty much every club in this league over the last few years, most of them multiple times and that is with our first team. To suggest our deadwood would improve several of them is a bit much.
Yes that is a fair point. I would say though, defensively the premiership was actually very weak last season and has started that way this, look at the number of goals. As awful as all these centre backs have been, they would improve several sides in the league in my opinion

He's a potential bargain but unfortunately we don't look to do similar deals.
I think currently the bigger problem would be that we have to many midfielders to begin with and struggle to offload the players, we want to offload. I am also not sure, whether we are actually looking for a defensive midfielder, but for those conditions, he would have been a good gamble.

That's in relation to the Covid-19 absence of fans - and associated loss of income - from match-days. It's a loss that all clubs face and which all clubs will have to absorb/cover one way or another.
Yup, but Spurs have been particularly hit during this pandemic.
£175m loan, United took out a £140m loan and predict lower losses than Spurs, who predict to lose £200m, probably more now the stadium cannot be used at all this year.

Yeah, it is a little confusing. A lot of tweets from journalists who clearly have ties to United were saying that Porto wanted 20 million for him. However, more recently, and like you said, there were some reports claiming that Porto was actually looking for 40 million. I cannot figure out whether the initial reports were journos best guesses or leaks from United/Porto. If there is a deadlock it would kind of make sense if the asking price was 40 million, because 20 million seems to be an absolute bargain, regardless of how many years he has left on his contract

Haven’t been on here for a little while. From what I can see, literally every club is doing business bar United. We have one iron in the fire – an average left back, but we can’t get what should be a straightforward deal over the line. And he will be our marquee signing. Lovely.

We’re run by accountants it will be completely against everything they hold dear (and their job description) to pay more than absolutely necessary even when it gets down to a few hundred thousand.

We haven’t got a sugar daddy owner, every pound we spend is a pound out of the glazers pockets and they don’t want to give it up, hence the horrendous haggling to get the best possible deal.

I think it much more to do, how much we have to pay the agents who manage the deal as 3rd party. That's always the case with players from Portuguese league.

Pretty sure that it's over for this window. We don't have money available and haven't made any sales to help us out.
if that is true and the summer budget was €40 million then

I can’t even be bothered to be angry anymore. It just goes to show the lack of ambition under these parasites.

Literally every single one of our rivals for top 4 have strengthened. This is going to be a long and disappointing season.

Poor Ole will be the scapegoat when we fail as well.

You mean like Kevin de Bruyne?
De bruyne never even got a chance at chelsea though, I'm not against giving players a chance but you can't hold onto players for seasons in hope they come good and the best well run clubs know when to sell but we don't, look at liverpool and how they are able to sell their former youth players for 20 plus million and yet here we are with the likes of lingard, smalling, Pereira and jones being hard to shift because we clinged onto them for too long

Can we get any business done swiftly?? Or does everything we do have to be a long and protracted saga
