It was only a free because it was Ancelotti, Madrid would have wanted some fee from anyone else. Surely a lot less than Aouar but you can't get them all...
Would he have chosen Arsenal over his father?
Not a ton of precedence for players choosing a non-big 6 team over a big 6 team with a clear starting spot available surely?

Why do Madrid care about Carlo? Surely a 5 or 10M fee from Arsenal is better than 0 from Ancelotti?

Eriksen could also have been an option though rumours were he was being a bit picky despite Conte not really wanting him so who knows.

My broader point is that 10s are hard to fit in and so often surplus to requirement at their clubs and Arsenal had an open spot, probably was a decent option available somewhere once they had decided to buy Partey over Aouar.

First time really watching him in the premier league. Looks like a class defensive midfielder. Great vision, ball retention, passing and spatial awareness. Didn’t cost much either. Seems like he will be a great signing for them

Should've been a player we bought. Does everything Matic does but fitter, faster and younger.

Looked a level above everyone else on the pitch so far.

It was kind of too obvious as a signing for us. Instead, we bought DvdB, who is a good player, only not the player we actually needed.
I guess he was the wrong age profile for Glazernomics or the player did not want to come here. The latter case is acceptable.

Its Arsenal's team pressing thats causing a problem, not 1 player. Lacazette has made 3 tackles, Saka has made 4 interceptions. Partey 1 tackle 1 interception. He's been fine, part of the team but its the setup and tactics causing a problem for us

Plus Partey is the extra man in midfield.

His agent must have told teams it’s only Arsenal he wants as it makes no sense no one else attempted to sign him.

Upgrade on what they have (ie: Xhaka). Good midfielder, surprised Mourinho or even Ole didn't go in for him.

Looked decent today. Nothing special but better than Mctominay and Fred on the basis of this outing. Not that it's much praise.

I actually thought El Neny was the better player, his interceptions kept up the momentum and pressure.

Had a very good game again. You can see he's a level above the way he asks for the ball in very tight situations. Other Arsenal players are not trusting it yet having played with the extremy static Xhaka but it can only get better. There was also multiple occasions where he lost the ball trying to penetrate but recovered it by himself 3s later. He just doesn't give up.
I still think Xhaka have a role to play alongside him but massive credit to El Neny who left it all out there today.

I agree. I think they were both doing different jobs and were both very good, but Elneny built the platform for them to control the first half.

He looked very good today. It still baffles me that we had no interest in him.

Made quite alot of mistakes in my opinion. Lost the ball in dangerous positions.

His team won & outplayed us so he gets looked as a positive.

It makes me think why we needed another attacking midfielder instead of him. Would've made much more sense but maybe I don't see the whole picture.

We buy DVB for a the same amount of money and Ole doesn't seem to trust him but we could have bought this guy - bizarre !

He could play 6 or 8 in any team

He's bossed the first half like a young Vieira/Petit. Impressive.

Snappy passing, light on his feet, defensively switched on, looks a massive upgrade on Xhaka for Arsenal, gives them a mixture of quality and physicality that they have been missing in midfield for the longest time.

What a beast this guy is. To think we have gone from Swiss Charlie Adam to Partey. Massive massive player.

I didn’t think he was that great tbh? I’m sure he’s a good player but didn’t really show it today. Better than Xhaka though obviously.

Wanted him in the summer. I feel he would have elevated us and been a perfect fit.
As did I, was really jealous when Arsenal signed him. He ran the game today, have to wonder who's actually calling the shots with our transfers. £50m for Partey will turn out to be a bargain come the end of the season.

I can't remember why I joined this war.
Good player. Also completely surprising he can do more than just run and foul as compared to Fred and Mac T.

That being said the Partey I saw at Atletico could be very inconsistent, and he followed great performances up with very average or bad ones, so let's see how he will develop at Arsenal and if he can bring consistency to his game. Maybe it helps him to be a permanent starter when fit.

Not really sure how you can’t rate this guy. Has all the physical qualities needed for a CM , can play accurate forward passes, can transition a team from defence to attack with his dribbling and is composed when being pressed on the ball. Very few players like him in world football atm , even more staggering he only went for £45 million.

He seemed like such an obvious signing too.

I don't doubt his quality at all, he's a proven player. But today's performance wasn't that noteworthy.

It's very strange we didn't go for Partey and Bale instead of Cavani and Van de Beek, but Ole probably felt he can make a defensive midfielder out of McTominay.

A solid 7/10 for me. Thing is, he's an upgrade on what we have, was proven and didn't cost all too much in today's market. Seems like a missed opportunity to improve on our first eleven.

Looked great. Cost them about our average spend on a player.
