So many fans talk about a lack of coaching yet still talk about how crap players like Rashford, Martial, Wan Bissaka, Mctomminay even Bruno, Maguire and Pogba are.

Il wait until they fail at the epitome of coaching.

I think this is 7 games without a goal from open play. He does nothing in the build up, hes not a target man,hes easily bullied, hes not clinical, but apart from that hes been excellent.

He really hasnt improved that much since his first season under LVG. He is 25 now so he is what he is. A good striker that is very inconsistent and I think a mid table team like West Ham is probably his level or a team in a different league like Leipzig or Atalanta.
He's not a player for top tier teams. Maybe a level just below or if not that then a mid table team.

Lets be real. Say he played for West Ham for example doubt we'd be thinking of buying him.
We would look at players like DCL and Ings if we were looking to buy a striker from another PL team.

‘The goal he scored against Istanbul was an open play. I think his build up play is something he’s done well so far. Linking the midfield/defense to attack. I just wish he press more often or more consistent in pressing.

It's weird because I thought we pressed well as a team the second half of last season and now players seems to do it individually only once every 5 minutes likes it not become a tactic.

It may be just me, but I think Martial gets a lot of unfair stick from us fans. I wouldn't read too much into the stat that he hasn't had a shot on target in the league so far given that he was suspended for 3 games. In my opinion a lot of the comments on his perceived laziness also seem to stem from the Mourinho era. He has been a changed man ever since Ole came in.

Martial remains an important member of the team to me. He shielded and held up the ball well at times against Everton, giving us an outlet in the central areas whereas Rashford couldn't accomplish that basic aspect of a center forward against Arsenal. Nothing against Rashford as each of them has their own strengths and skillsets which we sorely miss whenever either of them are ruled out.

It also just seems strange that we criticize Martial for a lack of effort in pressing when I distinctly recall him getting in Digne's face and blocking a pass from Digne at the right wing in the 2nd half. He does a lot of work which goes unnoticed or ignored.

Of course, I wouldn't say Martial had the best game today but he certainly wasn't horrible. He wasn't our Players' Player of the Season last time out for nothing and I have no doubt he'll find form soon and start scoring again when we need him

i give up with this guy

i like him he's a top top talent and i'd keep in the squad but he's such a lazy player on the pitch

after following and watching him closely for the last 5 years i've come to the conclusion and have accepted he will not be a world class or a top tier centre forward

He's just not aggressive enough and loses concentration alot. its not his fault its just the way he is i suppose..

Ok honestly...how many of you would rather have Martial over DCL, Ings, Jimenez or Zaha or even Vardy?
I dont think anyone would.
And those are forwards from 2nd tier teams not top 6.

Which tells you that he isnt caliber for us. Why arent we currently at the level of Bayern Munich, Barcelona etc? Well if our leading striker wouldnt start for Southampton or Wolves then whats the surprise.

We got way too comfortable accepting the level that Martial is and its the real undoing of our team IMO. We just lost that mentality of hey holy sht we're Manchester United, we should be better than Barca and Madrid and Munich etc...now its like...yeah Martial is okay, he is young, give him time.

He’s comfortably better than most of those players apart from Vardy so I for one would much rather have Martial. No surprise to me that as soon as he returned, we actually managed to hold up the ball, win free kicks up the pitch and actually generate chances, he’s vital to this team. He was also inches from scoring a great goal out of nothing which if he would have converted this thread would read entirely differently.

Martial is too inconsistent to be our starting number 9. That’s the reality. He’s unplayable on his day but again similar to Rashford they can’t find the consistency and it’s so frustrating. I’d say our back four is quite settled now after the mini blip we had and the midfield are settled with Fred, Mcsauce the preferred duo with Bruno in front. Martial is going to lose his place the way he’s going.

I dont see it for one. To me all those players I mentioned are better than Martial. Now would those teams lose a lot if you replaced those players with Martial? Probably not.
But thats my whole point. He is good for that level. He could be a striker for Southampton.
Just not for us, we should be comparing ourselves to teams like Munich.

If martial played for those teams you’d realise just how good he is. He’s our best attacker as is so if you truly believe he’s that level then you must think as far terrible.

Then I must think he's terrible? Not at all. I rate Martial. I disagree he is our best attacker, I prefer Rashford and think Greenwood is much more of a natural goal scorer too but Martial is a good player. Just not good enough for us.
My point is that our undoing began when we started accepting less than world class players at vital positions. Like someone said the other day, if SAF was back managing this team, the first thing he would demand would be to sign a world class striker. Now hopefully Greenwood becomes that..

I just don't expect him to score and as a number 9, that's criminal.c

Yeh he'll go on a nice run of form where he'll score a brace or two, a nice curler even. But that will only last for a 4/5 games before he then reverts back to his usual self.

What is this now, his 6th season with us?? He's not gonna improve much more. We need to get rid and find a real number 9

Calls for Cavani to displace him are premature.

That said, I think Martial has had a disappointing start this season thus far. We know he can play much better.

His 6th but only the 2nd season he got to play as #9. Last year POTY. This year a slow start, a red card and out for 4 matches. Yeah we surely need to get rid and find a new one.

Given how well he took that ball out the air and the quickness he got that shot of the rest of the game bar a few occasions he always seemed to mess up his touch when it mattered. Took him a while to realise when Bruno goes on his wonders he is the one that needs to step in to where Bruno should be which he did eventually start doing.

Didn’t look sharp at all.

It's insane to read some of the comments here. I don't think these posters know an awful lot about football.
Top player, our best player last season.

Easily the best forward in the league at holding the ball up and bringing other players into the move. I think he's absolutely vital to our team. I haven't seen anyone this good at this aspect of the game since Ruud.

He's not even the best French forward in the league at hold up. Don't disagree with him being vital for us though, easily the best of are forwards in regard to hold up play.

Martial is not the best in the league at anything other than maybe strolling around the pitch.

There's a reason Mourinho tried to exchange him for Ivan Perisic and our fans went mental. Perisic ended up winning the CL with Bayern.

feck that. They didnt need Perisic to win the CL whilst Lukaku needed Perisic's crossing.

He's been at the club for FIVE years

229 appearances in the first team
I think thats long enough to make a fair assessment of a player IMO

Fine, let's stick with him. We'll be having this exact same discussion next season I can guarantee you that!

One of his worst in our shirt yesterday I’d say but he was so much better last season. Still young but almost 25 - he does need to pick it up this season or not sure we can justify keeping him as a starter.

Or another POTY discussion by the end of this season. Same as last year? That I can't guarantee you though. I can't predict future.

So fair assessment is some people think he isnt good enough at all and some people think he is good enough for some standard at United even if he isnt the first name on the team sheet?

He isnt exactly deadwood so what's the complaining about? Did he cry when Haaland was linked or Cavani was signed? I dont think so.

Get a more traditional number 9 and keep him in the squad, he is a decent player with a wage that is overpayed- again not his fault and the fault of the people who gives him the contract.

People act like this guy is the striker version of Marcus Rojo.

He said he will play LW if the manager wants him there, that he will play CF aswell.

We aren't exactly a team loaded with depth.

The fact FIVE years down the line he divides opinion with fans says it all really

Mourinho was right about him
very talented player but very lazy to put it bluntly.

me personally i like him... i'd keep him as a squad player maybe as a supersub and back up LW/CF... but not as a starter because he's unreliable.
Simply put you just dont know which Anthony will turn up.

No one said he's trash ffs, he's a decent forward player but that's it. He's not an elite CF that we need, like a lewandowski or Haaland. Someone you can really bank on scoring most games, scoring 20+ goals season after season. Can you really tell me martial gives you that confidence?
