Despite starting with 6 clean sheets when moving to Chelsea having faced no shots, he’s beginning to look pretty average and at times a bit lost.

Grealish could have pulled the trigger really early a minute ago, Mendys position was shocking and slow to get back to his near post.

You think he's not been an huge upgrade on Kepa?
A training cone would be an upgrade on Kepa. I dont think he's a long term answer though. Give it 12 months and you could be looking for an upgrade again.

To be fair, putting Kante in net would be a huge upgrade on Kepa. But Mendy certainly doesn’t look like a long term solution to take Chelsea places.

It’s strange as he looks far more nervous and erratic compared to Kepa who always has an arrogance and confidence about him. Obviously that’s a false confidence as he keeps dropping clangers but Mendy needs to settle a bit more. I think he’s a little overwhelmed by the pressure. Good keeper, just needs to relax.

Still think this?
Is this a joke? He's been excellent. His distribution today was absolutely top notch. He's not to blame for Kante not tracking a runner whilst Christensen lies on the floor like a fanny.

It's also not a coincidence that we are now very good at defending set pieces; he's extremely proactive as opposed to Kepa.

He is 28, I'm not sure if you want a player to be promising at this stage of his career.
He looks okay but nothing more. Still appears to have a howler in him but is an upgrade on Kepa at least.

Stop gap keeper. Would Chelsea not be interested in Donnarumma in January?

@duffer do you think he's been "excellent?"

They can't keep buying keeper after keeper, surely?
If you had this dude Mendy as your number one and Donnarruma is going on a free transfer your telling me you wouldn’t be interested?

Levels. This guy seems a stop gap. Top keepers are few and far between.

Looks good enough to me. Maybe at the same level as Lloris when his confidence was low, which is a big upgrade on Kepa last year. You'd think they could have found someone better but he still seems less error-prone than someone like De Gea at the moment. Maybe not good enough to win you the title but good enough to challenge.

Chelsea (the saviours of football) fan.
Africa just dont seem to produce top quality keepers.

Mendy aint one for sure
He's born and raised in France, never having spent a single second in any African team's developmental system.

His first involvement with any African football was as a 26 year old.

If you think Mendy is shit, it's not because of where his parents were born.

Off all the thing wrong with our team at the moment one of the least of our worries are chosen for the kneejerk/previous match judgements....

He's good and dependable.

Chelsea weren't going to spend big on a keeper after the Kepa debacle.

They should be all over that. Hope they don’t get him.
Mendy is better than Donnarumma right now - whether Donnarumma would surpass him once he's 28 is a different discussion.

He's extending with Milan anyhow and frankly I'd prefer to not go near any Raiola clients with the exception of Haaland. Haaland is worth dealing with Raiola, Donnarumma just isn't.

I've not seen much of Donnarumma lately but thought he was supposed to be a world class talent?

Mendy isn't WC and never will be. Unless Donnarumma has regressed surely he'd be worth looking at for free and getting rid of Kepa?

Don't get me wrong, Donnarumma is an outstanding player and is absolutely the best goalkeeper of his age in Europe by some distance, but he still has mistakes in him. I think he'd likely be a better goalkeeper at age 28 than Mendy is, but if my life depends on a match outcome tomorrow I'd take Mendy. Mendy had the 9th best save percentage of any keeper in the top 5 leagues in Europe last season; he really is a top tier player.

The issue with signing Donnarumma is that he'll demand probably the most expensive contract ever for a goalkeeper plus a hefty signing on bonus and agents' fee. I'd rather not bother to be honest - Mendy is more than good enough for the immediate future and as such our resources could be better allocated elsewhere (Haaland and/or Rice, in particular).

Sorry I don't see Mendy as a top tier/elite level goalkeeper.

I think it's fair to question whether his level that he showed last year is sustainable but on that basis he absolutely was an elite tier goalkeeper. Like I said, he was 9th among all top 5 league goalkeepers in save percentage last season and given his height and proactivity he's among the best at cross collection. He's done nothing at Chelsea to suggest that was a fluke - if anything he's been even better than he was last year.

You see him more than me mate so fair enough. He always seems to have a bit of a mistake when I watch him although that's only now and again. I might just catch him at the worst times!

He’s certainly not Chelsea’s biggest problem atm. Ironically the attack is their main issue imo. I mean they don’t concede too many goals but they can’t score either despite spending all that money on the attack.

I think with they will bloom with the right manager.

Fair enough! I just think that he's had such a positive influence on our defence coming good, far more so than Silva even. I'm more than happy with him and there are definitely other areas of the squad (stroke dugout) I'd prioritise in terms of upgrades.

Decent keeper, nothing special. Seems to push away or parry a lot of balls you’d expect a top keeper to catch.
Which then makes it a huge huge improvement on Kepa who would dive over it or push it into his own net

He does do that, and French journos on twitter mentioned that as one of his negatives when we were first linked with him.

It's less of a pressing need and moreso that Haaland is a generational player who is worth breaking the bank for. There have been reports that we're going to try to sign him in January, though I'll believe that when I see it.

well that's fair enough, but that side has a good amount of top strikers already

Giroud isn't getting any younger and Tammy is likely a limited player - good enough for the PL but not if you want to challenge for the big honours. Haaland changes all of that.
