It’s only impeding if he moves into his path to block, he doesn’t do that. It’s a tricky one but clearly no intention to foul or block, he’s allowed to try and block the ball himself and defend.

Its 1 of those grey areas but CL is the one that creates the contact, so for me no penalty.
Yeah it's definitely tricky... To me the action of the slide is the movement to block the path, even it was for the previous action, I think that action and DLC running into him are close enough together in time to warrant the penalty.

I think that's the what the ref saw too as no red card was shown (as the block of the shot is a clear attempt to play the ball)

You’ve just given me the answer, because if he stands up, then he’s impeding DCL even further. Anyway, the rules say that if you impede someone, it’s a foul. He could be in the dressing room toilet as far as I’m concerned, if he stops DCL from scoring the open goal without a valid tackle, then it’s a pen.

Put it this way, if it was an open play foul, no one would be complaining.

Anyway, time for the Klopp meltdown.
That's because it wouldn't be of any consequence. If it was blown for anywhere else on the pitch I'd go "that wasn't a foul", chuckle and then forget about it.

He didn't say anything note worthy... :(
He seemed to say Hendo's injury "is only a small one, unfortunately".

Didn't sound like he said "isn't", so maybe he meant it's only small, so it's annoying he had to come off for it.

The pen looked absolutely 100% nailed on in real time.

On ultra slow mo, TAA is down and DCL sort of trips over him, but TAA is doing some odd stuff with his hands and feet in a sort of trip motion, and more importantly, by accident or not, has brought him down when he's got a near open goal.

The ref was checking for contact to make sure DCL didn't dive. He knew it was a pen

But he wasn't even moving towards him was he? He was just sat there as Calvert Lewin ran into the back of him.
He was slightly lifting his head but I don't think that actually matters... The previous action of him sliding in has carried over to impact DCL.

I didn’t think it was a pen at all. If he was just standing there and CL ran into him, what would the call be? And if the penalty was awarded how was no card given, as he’s last man stopping a goal scoring opportunity?

Also the fact that the ref went to the monitor, and took the briefest look was strange.

So how is he intentionally blocking him if he’s just tried to stop a shot? You can’t make a slide tackle then expect somebody to run into you from behind, it makes no sense
Why are you adding intentionally?

He's tried to block a shock, not done it and his momentum has seen him continue into Calvert-Lewin's path who he stops from scoring.

I fully agree with any wording you want to use to intimate that it was unfortunate; he slides an awful long way and it's unlucky he didn't pull up shorter. But at no point does he play the ball, and if TAA is not there Calvert-Lewin pops it in for 2-0.

Serves Klopp right for being a smart arse and trying to influences referees for our games.

ESPN refs take... As he says, intent isn't a thing..
VAR review was to over turn penalty... stopped a clear goal sliding in tripping attacker, intent doesn't matter, should be a red too, ffs

Deary me.

He was still sliding when contact was made.

Nailed on penalty. Not DCL's problem if the contact was accidental, it still stopped him from getting to the ball.

He wasn't standing though he was laying on the ground, as a result of a missed block....which is why I don't think there was a red card because that slide was a genuine attempt to play the ball.

The refs VAR check was strange though... Clearly he was convinced!

If you see a defender laying on the ground in the penalty area, quickly charge towards them and fall over.
Exactly. This is why I'm not sure that's a pen. If it is then every corner is a pen as the defenders are stopping
the attacker getting the ball.

Some odd conversations in here.

Sliding into another player to win the ball and not winning the ball is what 99% of fouls are.

Yeah, DCL took the invitation to go down as 90% of players also do when winning fouls.

Figures are approximate.

I just don’t see how he can be trying to stop a shot at goal 1 second, then slide on a wet pitch and a second later the striker runs into the back of his head. How can that be a foul by the defender? He literally cannot get out of the way even if he wants to. If he tripped him with a Leg/arm as he tried to get the ball then fair enough, but DCL runs into him. If he was on his feet and he ran into him it would never be a foul.

the ESPN ref comparing that to David luiz is a joke, situation is very different

He doesn’t slide into him though does he!!! DCL runs into him that’s the whole point.:houllier:

My point is that most players don't intend to slide into the player who they foul. The fact they do is why it's a foul.

Let's say a player with infinite momentum attempts to make a slide tackle on the halfway line and ends up sending an opposing player into orbit who is situated roughly by the corner flag, then it's still a foul, irrespective of intent.

Probably

He only runs into him because he’s literally right in front of him, sliding across him and blocking him from the tap in. DCL couldn’t avoid him to get to the ball.

What is DCL supposed to do? Just stop and let the chance go because some jabroni sliding along the floor?

But that would be the defender sliding into the attacker to create contact, this is the completely opposite situation.

if an attacker runs into a defender standing still trying to attack a cross, is it a penalty? Not a chance. You’re getting very muddled up here thinking TAA made the contact happen.

And what’s the issue with that? He’s allowed to be anywhere on the pitch. Sliding In front of somebody isn’t illegal.

IF TAA deviated his path to stop DCL getting the ball then it would’ve been a foul, but he’s on his backside not even looking at him! DCL is stumbling and runs right into the back of him .

And you’re getting muddled thinking intent is relevant.

Admittedly it was more of a block than a slide but TAA's still stopping him from getting to a loose ball, which in this case would have been a clear 1v1.

It's not like TAA was standing there bopping along to One Direction when big bad DCL comes over and charges into the back of him. Granted would have been amusing.

Intent has nothing to do with it when he didn’t even make the foul? He could have happily ran around him but chose to try and jump over and fecked it up.

it really is surprising how little common sense is used here.

What do you mean what’s the issue with that? He literally made a challenge to block the ball and the follow through led to tripping over the striker. Intent isn’t relevant.

How does he stop him getting to the ball? He could easily run around him or even jump over him properly. Instead he creates the contact by choosing to go over him instead of around.

his own knee smacking into trents head is what causes him to go over ffs

Look how fast it all happened, what do you mean he could have ran around.

Please think about this for a moment

DCL was looking for it though. 100%.
