Fernandes' signing was the end of Lingard starting for us regularly and nothing has changed. He's doing well for West Ham because they dont have a Fernandes and he can play every week. After the past 3 years of being average, he would finally be sought after as a transfer on current form. But I'd be surprised if it was as a starter to any team above West Ham (5th) in the table. And if he goes as a squad player, expect him to be the same as he has been the last 3 seasons for United where he was a hinderance and not a help

Sell. Sell. Sell.

A player surplus to requirements, who will now command a far higher fee that can be spent on an area that is deemed more important. He isn't a starter, so why bother wasting this opportunity when the money could go towards a Sancho level player who improves the first 11?

It'd be absolutely typical of us not to sell a player at the right time though.

What absolute shit are your dribbling.

Jesse was fecking horrible and had gone months without goals and assists. He was misplacing passes and should have been frozen out sooner.
Can you read?

I accept that Lingard wasn't good enough for a while. I accept that moving on was the best move.
I really do not appreciate having to explain something so obvious simple because you refuse to read.

I have not said he should not have been let go. I have said, essentially, that Ole cut him off in an unnecessarily public manner in order to build his own reputation.

Can you understand that?

I hope we keep Lingard if we bring in a better manager that can use a player like him.

Under Ole though it might be pretty pointless to keep him, but it may work once we get a new manager in the future.

If he goes it is not a big problem I say if Pogba stays and we do not lose too many players without getting new ones.
This is why his exit leaves a bitter taste for me. At this point in time, Ole was coming under increasing pressure for being a nice guy. He would follow this up with that interview where he talks about giving players chances and then binning them.

I accept that Lingard wasn't good enough for a while. I accept that moving on was the best move.

But Ole threw him under the bus to build his own reputation.
Agree with both of these, though people will obviously foam at the mouth at the very thought of questioning Ole's man management and tactical acumen.

Yeah he is the kind of player you can afford to keep if you haven't got significant issues with the first XI and a board who will plead poverty given the opportunity, therefore we simply have to sell him this summer to raise some funds to go towards addressing our main holes in the team.

I'm really happy he's doing well but we should be looking to improve in that area. Would he get into the Bayern or PSG or Real teams.

Forget where we are now, that's the level we need to get back to

This is out of United's hands. If I was Jesse, I wouldn't want to come back. This loan move means he is the main man at West Ham and also may secure him a seat on the plane to the Euros. He would be insane to come back to United.

Besides, Jesse is getting closer to his 30s and this is the time we should cash in.

What if Lingard stars for England winning the Euros? This is highly unlikely but you never know. It would be an awkward situation in that England's the biggest clubs does not want one of England's big stars.

This exactly. There’s a best time to buy and a best time to sell. This is the time to sell. He might even be good for the next few years but he’s on big money, huge money when you consider his output for us and he is not going to take a pay cut to sit on our bench. Sell and reinvest. I wish every potential sale just fell into our lap like this... not even we can mess this one up. :)

It is not that unlikely. England are by the bookies one of the favorites to win it. Lingard got a good chance to be in the squad if he keeps his form up. If some player underperform and others gets injured he might start.

I think Mount and Foden is probably ahead of him right now for attacking midfield roles.

If it’s players like Lingard that get you excited and you want the manager changed to accommodate I would respectfully suggest you’d enjoy supporting Everton or West Ham.

The reason being? Jesse Lingard was awful for United under multiple managers for many years and even at his best was barely good enough to be a squad player for a top six team.

Reading this thread, anyone would think that we are debating Real Madrid Kaka here... Not a mediocre academy product.

Edit: Moving to West Ham is a good move for Jesse and the Club, a genuine win win. Good for him.

Read your post again but with Ole instead of Lingard, and you'll see how I feel about both individuals.

They're both average and brought out the worst in each other.

I see your point, but this thread is about Lingard.

Forming your opinion on him based off of your opinion on Ole would be daft.

However, if I understand you correctly you agree with me on Lingard in isolation?

Sell. Can't believe any United fans would desperately want Lingard back in the first team.

Golden Boot / Ball incoming.

It would be great if he did come back. He has his whole career ahead of him at the age of 18

Sell sell while the price is high. Don't wait, bring back and extend his contract, goes back to the old lingard and we're stuck with him for 3 years! Be smart this time (mata, jones, etc.)

I like Lingard and what he achieved here whilst he was our player. I feel the hatred that he received from our fans is unfair - but then again I think our rivals fans support of their club is better than what our fans ever does.

However, I still cant believe that Van De Beek is not the golden version of Lingard. As a CAM I dont see what Lingard has that Van de Beek doesnt except possibly some confidence in making a pass. The goal scoring, the hard work the good runs is how I see VDB as a player anyway - yet the benefit of VDB is that within the squad he can also play deeper in midfield better than Lingard ever could as he only plays CAM.

VDB is a more versatile and young version of Lingard and in theory he should be better

Would you have said the same at any other point in the last 2 years?

Do you rate his current form as his usual level of performance?

Makes no sense to keep him. He would be on the bench and his level would drop again. Sell in the summer

I probably would, yeah. He’s not a top class player, he’s not at that level now even, but he’s had good seasons for United in the past, scored goals in finals and performed for the national team.
Right now he’s playing really well, and he deserves credit, not to be spoken about like he’s rubbish. Everyone knows his performance level was poor last season, but he had personal problems that can affect anyone, I’d say the way he’s playing now is more his real level than how he played when struggling with personal issues.

I don't know he was especially bad these last 2 years (hasn't been pulling up trees since late 2017 in all honesty) and i don't know if that can all be attributed to personal problems. So i don't think it's unfair for people to now rate him based on the last 2 years. His current form is good for West Ham but let's be honest outside of that and a short run under Jose he's never been anything more than a good to decent hardworking player, he's always been inconsistent and over the last 4 years i would say he's been more awful than good.

A small period is not 18 months.

Nor is your opinion worth anything when you try to argue that a manger under pressure would throw a player that, in your opinion, could have a large impact on our team, under the bus. The mental gymnastics you’re having to justify that position with considering the manager you’re talking about must be rather difficult.

Lingard was unbelievably shit and got binned for it. If anything Ole gave him more time than anybody and was being criticised for it.

You’re talking absolute shite for your agenda bullshit.

We’ll have to agree to disagree, because when I read you saying that you think he’s been ‘awful’ more than he’s been good for four years now I can’t help but feel he’s underrated. In 2018 he played really well in the World Cup, and after Jose was sacked he was a big part of the team that Ole got the winning run out of that landed him the permanent job. In that match against Liverpool at Old Trafford Lingard got injured (among a few that did) and we suffered for it. I think it’s only last season that he really struggled, which I do think is down to personal issues. Obviously this season he didn’t really get a go until he went to West Ham and he looks to be thriving there. Really underrated on here.

I don't know what your problem is honestly.

Where did I say Lingard was bad for a small period? I said he was bad for a while.

Feel free to carry on with your various strawmen. You'll be ignored beyond this point.

Agree we tend to underrate our own a lot due to players having a bad period and then all the good gets overlooked. Fred, Mctominay, Maguire, Lindelöf, AWB, Rashford, Martial got a bit underrated from bad periods or spells.

I think though some overrate and others underrate most of our players. It is the emotions of the game.

I think the only player we got that everyone rate regulary for us is Bruno since he puts up so good numbers, but even Bruno got terrible games for us when he miss lots of passes etc.

Agreed, I think the main time people tend to over/under rate on here is if there's direct competition with that player in the squad. At one point it was Martial vs Rashford, then De gea vs Henderson etc. I'm probably guilty of that myself a bit.

Yeah I think Pogba been one that many overrate and others underrate. Particular when he is not playing. I think he is a world class player, but also one that has not performed regulary at his best for us. None of our managers has got the absolute best of him either or got him the perfect role or position.

The irony is that Lingard was nowhere to be seen and now he is thriving elsewhere and back in the England senior team. Just wish he could have shown it with us over the last 2 years. I still think Lingard is a better squad player than the likes of van de Beek.

As i say he's inconsistent (wildly so) first half of 17/18 he had the best form of his United career but it didn't last long the rest of the season he was decent but not great. 18/19 He wasn't great in Jose's last few months, he started out well under Solskjaer for a month or two but it fizzled out as it usually does with Jesse and he finished the season in horrible form as were most of the team. 19/20 personal issues or not he was atrocious. For the first six months of this season he was usually awful on the rare occasion he got a game and that brings us to the good form he's now in for West Ham.

So i don't think i'm being harsh in my appraisal of Lingard over the last 4 years. It's a period that's been book ended by two periods of very good form (for him), a few good months in Solskjaer's honeymoon period and the rest decent to atrocious.

We can disagree no problem mate but personally i think it's harsh to say people are underrating him now just because he's currently in his first really good period of form for years.

Looks like he is already starting to fall back into his old habits that may have harmed his game previously at united, he seems to be thrusting himself into the spotlight/social media as much as possible with interviews, q&a's etc.

You would think he would just get his head down and make sure his current form isn't just another false dawn purple patch

I hope it does because that would mean better fee for us but I don't think it would because his talent is far too limited to sustain this kind of form for too long .
But it's fascinating to see the revisionism about him, how his prolonged period of mediocrity being dismissed as being exception while his purple patches of good form being rewritten as norm.

It happens with a lot of players but more so with Jesse as he has quite the fervent fan base on here.

Happy that he's doing well both on a personal level for himself and for United. Hopefully he will continue this sort of form until over the Euros so we finally can get a decent fee for one of our outgoing players.

Is much more harsh to say he’s ranged from decent to atrocious for years, though. In the 2017/2018 season when you say he had his best form but then was decent but not great, he was involved in 20 goals and then went on to have a really good World Cup with England, that’s when you’re really underrating him. Then in Oles interim season you’re quick to write off what he does well, and ignore that after he got injured against Liverpool he hardly featured, you can’t have horrible form if you suffer from a hamstring injury then a knee injury. Last season for a variety of reasons he was poor, and he was replaced at United with Bruno who is much better than him, but you’re still underrating him/not giving the credit he deserves for his time here.

Absolutely. Lingard has proven himself to be inadequate for a club of United's stature for prolonged periods. It's his better and impressive spells that came in fits and starts as you'd expect from any player who isn't cut out for the level of club they're at (see James as another example).

I have nothing against Lingard. Happy for him to have turned his form around and long may it continue. But for me, he's found the kind of club/team that is a better fit for a player of his level. And hence we really should sell and look to add players with mor ability to our team. People are only making a case for Lingard becuase we botched it with the VDB deal.
