Yeah, the new version of the CL looks like an absolute abomination.
UEFA have got most of the other recent changes right that everyone from the UK and Ireland panned when they were announced. The expanded Euros was a real winner, suddenly making the prospect of qualifying for the finals a possibility for a far greater range of countries. The Nations League was a winner, providing further competitive internationals and some nee silverware.

I’m interested to see how this new version of the CL feels. Football tends to be very conservative with its tournament formats. I’m sure the Proper Footballing Men will lampoon it, but it has the potential to provide something for people to get their teeth stuck into. Swiss systems always tend to provide interesting matches throughout and an exciting finish by their very nature.

Credit to our players who made their displeasure known within the club too. I've seen Bruno, Maguire, Shaw, Mata and De Gea cited in particular.

This really is the part that puzzles me and makes me suspicious that there is still a missing clue. Are we really supposed to believe that the most powerful men in the world failed to hire people who could foresee this reaction? My grandma could have predicted the backlash, and she's dead!
There could be many elements to it. Maybe they fully expected backlash from organizations and fans but all the government talk may have truly scared them.

Could also be that these American owners were just completely blinded by greed and all the others club in fear of missing out joined the project.

More facts will be coming out in the next months what happened behind the scenes. That is my expectation anyway.

He's not wrong about the ffp thing. City will continue to piss all over it, now even more so as they are the new Uefa darling.

financial fair play has to be implemented, football is far from saved
Better financial fair play for them maybe, not every other club in a dozen or more countries who'd be blown out of the water.

And it was definitely the first step to a move away from Uefa, franchises maybe, etc.

He (we) can spin it any way they want.

Absolutely pathetic and piss poor statement from Liverpool. Two short paragraphs, not even a smidge of an apology towards Klopp, the players or the fans. Feck off FSG, the sooner the better.
Same as United. Well at least they're not fecking trying to lie to us through the gritted teeth. Anyway, I bet FSG and Glazers are absolutely livid with this now. They actually thought they'd be able to franchise football. Really don't understand the fans at all.

Man, people need to keep this energy for when we have people in the ground. Light a fire under the arse of these Yanks.

Also, apparently Maguire organised the uprising. No official statements but I am inclined to believe and we better finish this season on a real high now.

Calling players and fans "internal and external stakeholders" has gotta be a pretty dark moment in Liverpool's history. Worse than the legacy fans comment, that.

I didn't hear a dickie bird from Spain against it and a lot of approval. Seems the UK backlash from the Government, fans and media sunk this fecker.
I went on the Real Madrid sub-reddit and more than half of their fans on there were at least receptive to the Super League, and at best cheerleading for it. I went onto the Barcelona sub-reddit and was happily surprised to see that they were more or less unanimous in the rejection of the ESL.

I've never been involved in a long thread like this. I am going to kind of miss it......work output dropped but football survived. Not going to lie but I was surprised how emotional all this made me.

Cheers, mates.

They've been working on their superleague idea for years and it was one of the biggest fiasco in the history of football, we're not going to see that anytime soon. I really disagree with this "it's bound to happen" speech. It's not.

Surely a Netflix documentary now. What a crazy 72 hours. Never experienced anything quite like it -- in football at least. A failed coupd'etat.

You can see by statements who is bitter, pissed, who feel forced to put it out and who is still trying to defend decision asking for understanding to take part in

The football fraternity now needs to focus on getting rid of the other poisonous influences such as agents, FIFA, UEFA, FA, etc, who themselves have been incompetent and are responsible for a lot of the discontent.

Honestly, this is some Thanos-level shit.

It's clear with Woodward's connection to JP Morgan that this has been the long game all along. That's why the Glazers never thought about selling the club before they could implement their disgusting grotesque version of a World Soccer League.

What do you people think was the catalyst for the dismantling of the ESL? The fans’ protests? Amazon saying “no dice”? Or the first club announcing that they were going to leave?

They need to educate themselves with the mindset of British and European sports fans.

I really, really hope that this isn't just a hollow statement from the football bodies. They have to show the owners that football clubs aren't merely their play things. On that note, they should also extend the consequences out to Roman and Abu Dhabi.
Now that would be a miracle.

It'll never happen. They cannot fathom jeopardy and transfers etc. It's not for them.
