Glad you admit so.

Still waiting for explanation on your previous post about Messi not being all time great since he's never left his comfort zone. I've given you Maldini as an example, but didn't get the answer, since you've been preoccupied with wumming.
When you compare Messi to the likes of Pele then these things are a barometer. Maldini doesn't get called the greatest player of all time which is why it wasn't worth a reply.

Anyway, let's be honest Cristiano has had a great career than Messi..who's only shined at the best team in the land.

Oh shit WUM.

It happens to Ronaldo thread and it happens to Messi thread too, to be honest, I start to think it’s really impossible to have a thread dedicated and talking purely about one of them, without the comparison.

So Maldini can't get into competiton for best ever LB because he's played his whole career with AC Milan? Wow, very strict criteria. But then again Roberto Carlos kind of flopped in Italy which elimintes him too, since he hasn't proved he can do it in multiple leagues?

Cristiano had greater career in terms of playing for more teams, yet he's still lesser player than Messi and will be no matter how hard you try with wumming.

If Messi had played his whole career for stokes, being the exact same player season for season he was for Barca, would he be a worse player?

Obviously not. It probably would mean he wouldn't have won a single title in his career and he most likely would have less scorers but he still would be the very same individual. So if we're comparing individuals, it is completely dumb to include team achievements. It's basically a confession that you have no clue about the sport. I mean, in the end, you're confronted with the task of assuming the quality of a player and the best you can think of is how many trophies he has won? That's like choosing the best actor based on his Academy Awards count.

It doesn't matter if the CA or the EC has a higher average level. It really doesn't matter one iota.
Good post

Carlos?.you're not old enough to have seen play but he was a bit overrated. Maldini is a great at least he performed for his country.

CR 7# could've played in any era. A proper great. Messi not so much.

WUM..or something.

Iniesta and Xavi aren't any good either, they played only for Barcelona, disgusting players, both of them.

Messi is definitely the best player in Copa, but to be honest, it’s kind of flaw to use it as player to player comparison as many players in Euro didn’t have enough minutes to compare as some of them couldn’t even proceed further from early knockout stage.

Note all the stats used “most amount of x.” to compare, naturally, the player who has played most of the games would have the advantage. The most suitable stats for comparison would be “most key pass” and “most dribble stats” as both players has played all the games in the tournament.

It does prove Messi is by far best/most impactful player in Copa though, who did dominate the tournament.

Was a tie between Cristiano and messi in my opinion until that copa America triumph. Against Brazil in Brazil too. Messi edges it for me now. Apart from the eye test of their h2h and dominance in Spain Messi has also made it to a World Cup final whereas Ronaldo did not. The whole argument that Messi is only winning because he’s at Barca is now no longer valid. We should not hold club loyalty against a player, makes no sense. So if Ronaldo stayed with us and won as much as Messi did we would hold it against him?? Take Messi out of the Barca team that beat us and they don’t win. Likewise i would like to see what that argentina team would do without him. He was responsible for like 80 percent of their goals in the tournament whether it is through assists or scoring. Still overall in my opinion maradona is the best player of all time (just with less longevity for obvious reasons) but Messi edges Cristiano for me. That’s not to say ronaldo is not great but Messi just a little bit better.

Messi also performs for Argentina, but your wumming doesn't allow you too see things clearly.

True that, would add Scholes and Giggs to the list as well.

This is some pretty weak wumming spoons given you also have history of trying to wind up Ronaldo fans into a reaction :)

Please don't tell me they're paying him €1.25m a week for 5 years? That is €390m.

Nah, it's not impossible. People are just idiots who can't follow simple rules. There's a thread dedicated to the comparison.

5 year deal is actually a very good contract for Messi. That would means Messi would be playing until he is 39, which is good news for Messi fans.

But question is, could Messi last that long on the top?

Cristiano would run rings around the likes of Bolivia. It's not even a debate. He's better than Messi.
Yet he gets knocked out by Uruguay and chile in the last two knockout tourneys Portugal took part in that involved SA teams. And Messi would run circles around North Macedonia and Ukraine

I don’t think all five years will be with Barca. I think it’ll be 2-3 years with Barca and then off to Miami in the MLS

Hes a short ass from Argentina, wears no 10. PLAYED all his football at one club. And gets paid an obscene amount of money, holds his club to Ransom when he want more, and scored a shed full of goals.
And he maybe one of the best that's been ?

Will he though? Usually players went to MSL to get the last fat pay cheque before their retirement. Messi is already so rich, he doesn't really need that?

I agree with you, I think it would be a waste, but rumours (and I emphasize rumours) say he wants make a mark in North America. Let’s see, but hopefully he just rides it out in Europe.

See it as a 2 year deal but spread the payment to 5 years. It is a win win situation for both parties. There is no point for Messi to be on reduced salary given his performance.

Are they taking a page from those new NFL contracts with void years? Those teams have to meet a spending cap and spreading the salary and assorted bonuses over more years than the player is realistically going to play helps meet that target.

No one will know the detail of the contract, but if i am messi and his agent, I will not take a pay cut when I am still playing at the highest level, and need to be paid at market value. What I will offer to help the club is spread the payment from a 2 year deal to 5 year, so that the club can work around the salary cap this year and next, and have time to sort out the overspending/finance chaos. It is a win win situation for both parties. Barcelona had the highest revenue pre-pandemic among all clubs. The current board just needs time to clean up the mess from the previous club management.

Messi and his whole family don't speak english. I doubt he will uproot his whole family to play in US for 2 years. He is very settled in Barcelona. I doubt he will move anywhere after he retire from football at all.

The headline is gonna be 'reduced' or '50% cut'...... not that he's signing a 5(!!) year contract at 34. Can't be many comparisons to that surely? Except guess who... who signed for shorter 4 years and was younger 33.

Blinder played by his team here.

That's curious because in the WC Messi was unable to help against Iceland or Greece.
In 12 games vs european teams in the WC he got 2 goals and 4 assists, 1 goal and 1 assist vs Serbia-Montenegro when he was young and entered when result was already 3-0 and with an extra man, 1 assist in extra time vs Switzerland, 1 goal vs Bosnia-Herzegovina and 2 assists vs France.
I don't know whose circles are those.

Some day people will understand the difference between a goalscorer, like CR and a total player who doesn´t need to score to be the best. It´s not that hard.

Nonsense, there is no one around today who could dominate a tournament statistically like that, no matter what tournament it was. It’s like this every year in La Liga, Messi heads virtually every single attacking statistical category, whilst in the other leagues its a whole bunch of different players leading the different categories.
