I know mate I’ve been reading the forum long enough to know he’s one of a few who’s life seems to revolve around Ronaldo and bigging him up on Internet forums, even when he’s been rotten.

He was a once fantastic player, that’s no longer the case. There’s a reason Juve and their fans were quite alright with seeing the back of him. Fernandes is the best player at the club but curiously seems to suffer for playing with Ronaldo both at club and international level. And for all the “he’d score loads of goals at City” chat - I’m willing to bet he wouldn’t even play nearly as often at City.
Too right. Guardiola is ruthless. Consider how he treated city legend Aguero before he left the club. Ronaldo would've never got his way there in terms of game time

He’s 37 years old for ffs, he should be used sparingly and as an impact player. He hasn’t got it in him to lead the line anymore for a team that’s struggling, goes back to the same issue of poor planning and no thought process.
Oh so now it's the age yet when 4 months ago Ole subbed him off all the pundits and fans went crazy because it was apparently a stupid decision.
I'm already waiting for all the mental gymnastic from Rio and co when he doesn't do well in the UCL

The more I watch Ronaldo the more I think that City would have struggled with him in the team.

Initially I thought that Pep's City would be TikiTaka-ing away from Ronaldo only to set him up to score easy goals;

But things like his first touch and passing is simply not good enough to start every game for City and against opposition that are parking the bus low as possible.

Dont get it either. Too big to be benched? He is more of an issue than a benefit imo
The thing is he would be a huge asset if we used him in a sane way. There was no reason for him to play 120 minutes vs Boro. There was no reason to even start him.
We aren't exactly in a no other choice situation. We have options and then the ability to make changes

Reckon if we use him sparingly it will benefit both Ronaldo and the team.

Best player in the history of the game misses a few chances in a domestic cup game and the knives are out in full force. :houllier:

While he is not the player he was, he is still right up there as one of the best around.

People talking about how he would have flopped at City are so funny. He would have hit 20-25 goals already in that City team.

We are a completely non functioning team, we create very little chances and it's a miracle he has managed to score a goal at all in open play considering how poor a team we are.

In the cup game for sure he had a couple of chances you would normally expect him to take especially the penalty but he is a still a human being even Ronaldo isn't perfect all the time. He also made lots of runs during that game that were completely ignored by Sancho and in particular Rashford. Every single time him and Rashford play together it is almost as if Rashford is purposely ignoring him.

It is well worth pointing out that the best chances of the game fell too Bruno and yet he isn't receiving anywhere near the same level of criticism as Ronaldo.

Knives have been out everytime he's had a average or shit game. He's had his moments, but he doesn't play as one of the best around anymore. Bruno hasn't been good either, but he was our talisman last season, so I guess he gets less flack because of that.

He had 10 shots against Boro, missed a penalty and couldn't score, he has the second most shots in the league after Salah, it's a myth we don't have any chances.

This is all a problem of our own making.

Who at the club decided a 36 year old, on a 2 year contract with massive wages (no matter how good a player he was) was a wise move? Where's the forward planning at this club?

It wouldn't surprise me if the club tried to pull off a Tom Brady move with his success at Tampa Bay.

The issue isn't Ronaldo missing chances, it's the fact that when he's missing chances he offers little less. It will also still be an issue when he inevitably starts taking those chances again.

Posters above comparing him to Bruno for example. But Bruno has scored more non-penalty goals in the league than Ronaldo this season (and also matches him in terns of npg/90, 0.36 vs 0.37), while also offering a lot more in general play. And he isn't in obvious decline due to advancing age, which isn't going to magically reverse itself. And this in Bruno in poor form. Which means it's pretty obvious why he is seen as less of an issue going forward than the 37 year old poacher who balks at even being subbed off.

It's fine to say "we're a non-functioning team" but your CF is supposed to actually help the team function, the team isn't there just to serve his needs. He's a part of the reason we've been non-functioning and has to take his share of the blame for that too.

Him being here isn't an issue as seen by his important champions League goals

The issue is how we use him. Obviously huge wages doesn't help and there was a feel good factor when he returned which was ridden initially

But the management of him has been atrocious for the most part. Especially with big games

He's a problem in the way his passing and stuff has not been good

It was a completely absurd move, there's only Silva who's older than him in the PL but Ronaldo has played 25000 minutes more than him so far in his career.

It's not really the issue though, he can't pass it, can't run with it and struggles controlling it and that's been the case all season. The lack of chances is due to the team around him, but the aforementioned issues are 100% on Ronaldo. Everyone else's passing was fairly sharp and crisp on Friday. He was one of the best players ever but he's 37 now and obviously not what he was a decade ago, which is normal and entirely expected, but we need to stop putting him up on a pedestal when his current ability isn't deserving of it.

You can’t look at it in that type of segmented way when players come as a package that includes all the implications of signing that player. You can’t say let’s sign Icardi - let’s not worry about the psycho missus!

whoever signed Ronnie wieghed up the good and bad and signed him anyway. IMO you can see exactly why he was signed when you lay out those pros and cons:

positives:amazing finishing, positive influence on younger players, mentality, brand growth, fan appeasement, shirt sales, advertising.

negatives: slow, low work rate, poor first touch, can’t hold the ball up, poor link up and offers nothing outside scoring so team needs to be set up to feed him, ego and liable to get stroppy if things don’t go to plan , must not be subbed too often or it will cause a stir, must start when fit or he and the media will cause shit.

All the positives are mainly off field stuff...However all the negatives relate to his actual on field performances. And everyone knew this when he signed. So you can’t say the problem is how we use him when the world and it’s dog knows that Ronaldo, at least at a club likeUtd or sporting...was never going to accept a Cavani type super sub role. He has to play when fit. It was a business/nostalgic move...not a footballing one. What footballing reasons could have been behind signing a 36 year old striker, on the decline, who must be the focal point of the team and play when fit? I was never on board. Even the last minute winners came in average all round performances. Nothing has changed that opinion for me.

I would remove amazing finishing as well as that no longer seems to be the case. In fact I can think of only the last minute goal against Atalanta that Ronaldo has scored this season that he wouldn't be expected to score not to mention the countless chances he has missed.

SUre, and im not disagreeing with any of what youre saying.
What im saying is that none of this would be an issue if we manage him better.

He has to play when fit... That again is upto management, unless its written in his contract.

Impossible! He would face a 56M£ rape lawsuit the minute he steps into the US. I'm not even sure he's allowed to enter the country with the tax fraud verdict he has on him.
The list of clubs that would take him and his wages now is extremely thin before considering the above, to say the least.

Pretty sure the judge threw that out and he's allowed to go to the US now, but for sure the press would enjoy it.

Hard to say that when he’s the best player in your squad by a large distance.
 he probably isn't even a top 30 player in the league. He gives you absolutely nothing outside of goals and he doesn't even score at an average rate anymore.

Shit I didn't know this. We're absolutely fecked for at least the next 18 months then.

Given our habit to offer new contract to players definitely past it and we definitely should not keep he'll be here until 40 yo I reckon.

Wrong. The civil suit is, most likely, in the process of being dismissed.

What makes it even worse, Utd already had a striker in his mid 30s who was happy to be a squad player.

Ibra as a 36 year old in the prem was at a much higher level than Ronaldo IMO.
And yet he'll finish the season with more league goals, at a higher league table finish despite being managed by two inferior managers in that timeframe.

And yeah, wouldn't miss so many sitters either.

Ibra scored 17 in that season before the injury. Won the League Cup with his brace… And he was much more useful in the build up. Ronaldo is not doing the same.

They had to do it to save face the optics would have been so bad if they didnt get him, the fans would have been in open revolt even though we shouldnt have signed him.

When he doesnt score and he hasnt been scoring that much for a long while now its hard to see what he offers the team, he is 37 and will be 38 before his contract ends what you are seeing now is Ronaldo in 2022 its not going to get better and probably only going to get worse, he is one of the greatest players of all time no question but time is a great leveler and it doesnt wait for anyone and we are seeing that now.

Zlatan was a completely different package to Ronaldo...really a worry for centrehalves ...not only had the skill to pull off the bit of magic but he bossed backlines as well...outmuscled them. What I wouldn’t give for that age Zlatan back. Mentality wise as well...seemed like he integrated quickly and was accepted.

Personally, I am going to be very disappointed and concerned if Ronaldo starts tonight. His form has been downright rotten for a couple of months now, not just the lack of goals, but his all-round game has massively deteriorated.

I'd look at starting Bruno as a false 9, with Rashford, Sancho and Elanga buzzing about in-behind/ahead

Less trophies though and a team who was expected to challenge for the title at the beginning of the season.
