He’s not world class in my opinion. A very good player no doubt but his wastefulness in front of goal puts him in the bracket below world class for me. It’s too big of a flaw to ignore.

He has such poor technique but he’s oddly productive. He’s a diver and a cheat though.

Sterling is basically Pedro. Works hard, and loves a far post tap in, but pretty clearly one of those players who benefits from Pep’s system, rather than one who is fundamental to it.

I mean, there’s not many more productive players in the world right now. Who is currently in world class form?

We have a number of full backs who are better players than him and Kane-when-not-playing-DM. Also if a single tournament were enough to call someone world class then Pickford would have been world class for a while now. But Sterling's a terrific player and the best of England's many wing forward type options at the minute for sure.

He's had a poor season and a half at club level by his best standards. He's found a bit of form very recently but not enough for him to be talked of as one of the best about like he was a few years back. His finishing is exceptionally poor and the stats back that up. It's major deficiency for a 'world class' player in his position.

Yes, he hasn't had a stellar year - but that seems to be the case for a lot of attacking players across the world!

SWP would be ball boy under Pep or maybe a training dummy.
Yeah sure and some of you are completely ignoring how good a young SWP was.

03-04 7 goals
04-05 11 goals

He was never ever World class. When in form he looked very good but still had major flaws. It's what happens when the English media overrate players and then everyone starts believing it and the sad thing is he's not the only English player who's being overrated.

Fecking hell, you'd think the Euros would have made that clear enough
By that logic most of English and Italian players are World Class

Genuinely tired of this guy. Hope he doesn't sign extension and leaves this summer.

His profile was so different he couldn't be far from Pep player. Proper kick and run player.

I know how good he was and he was no where near Sterling in talent and performance.

I thought he was a very good dribbler never had him down as a kick and run type winger, that was more Downing or even Lennon with his push it to the outside one trick he done, time and time again.

Yeah kick and run is bit harsh.

Not even close to being world class but is still a very good player. Gives City something different but Grealish is probably going to replace him in that role long term.

Yes, it’s terribly sad. Whatever will we do.

Sterling is absolutely world class and anyone who doesn’t think so is mental
Yep.

Has had a period of poor form for City but based on his record over the past 5 years if he's not WC then that rules out a lot of players being WC as well.

Of course this thread gets bumped after this game, ignoring his excellent form over the last month or so

Mate he's been piss poor for almost 2 years now. Why do you think the rumors of him leaving have been going on for the past 2 months?
He scores a few tap ins and he's back to being great. Some of you... :houllier:

I’ve just had a look at the links and they’re to Barcelona? Not exactly a club that you’d expect to be linked to after two years of supposed piss poor performances no?

With that Barca connection it wouldn't surprise me if City accept €20-25m + add-ons for Sterling. Could be a fine deal for Barcelona.

Are clubs happy to let world class players leave for not that much money usually because City don't seem to care if he leaves. Hes also in one of the most productive teams in the league which scores goals for fun and is usually in every competition until the latter stages. Any player in his position at City should be getting his numbers every season. There is a reason people don't really rate him in the top bracket. There is a reason people say hes very good but not world class. If you asked Chelsea, United, Arsenal, Liverpool etc if they would take him for £50m I don't know if any of them would.

City were ok with letting Bernando Silva, Sane... leave. They recognize that if you have a player who wants to go somewhere else, you let them go if a good offer comes in.

At this point if you can't see why Sterling isn't a great player nothing I'll say will convince you, so to each his own, but I'd probably go with Guardiola's opinion over the opinions of Redcafe posters. And yeah, I'm absolutely positive you're wrong on the bolded.

He nearly scored a magnificent goal and missed a very gettable chance.
Showed some sublime touches and got hooked midway through the second half.
Another day in the footballing life of Raheem Sterling.

The abuse Sterling gets from a huge number of City fans is absurd at best and sinister at worst.

Every goal he scores is a big Feck You to them, and I love it.

I don't get why they abuse him. He's done pretty well for them over the length of his time there, at times being one of their most important players. Any ideas what it might be?

I do know he gets a lot of stick from non-city fans, does feel like the media representation of him a few seasons back played some part in that, although I'm not sure why they were out for him too.

I feel like I watched a different tournament to everyone else in regards to Sterling. He was average at best, and outright wasteful at worst during the euros. To say he dragged us there seems mental to me, the entire team just slogged their eay

Not even in a United bias way because I didn’t even want Rashford to go to the tournament, and definitely didn’t want him to get minutes and the minutes he did he offered nothing.

There’s been large spells during his City tenure when he’s been a top 5 player in the league, or the best English player but even as an outsider he looks to be a very frustrating player who can go long spells where in all honesty he just gets in the way and every attack through him breaks down. I can imagine watching him 90 minutes every week just highlights that further.

Yeah I just think years of the media telling us he's a bad guy and a bad player have made a lot of our fans subconsciously start to believe that too.

England don't even get out of the group stage without Sterling's goals mate.

So that constitutes “dragging us to the final”? In those group games he was poor, offered very little and attacks often broke down when he had possession. But he scored three poachers goals, good on him getting in the right positions but that didn’t mask his performances.

In the knock-outs he played better, but still levels below what he is capable of. His best moment for me was probably his assist for Kane against Ukraine, under pressure he spots the run and weights the ball perfectly.

Having a ''shit'' season according to some but still City's current top goalscorer - dare I say again!

Love him and love the fact he continues to prove the haters wrong.

He's a stat padder just like our Rashy

Scores a hat trick after a couple of shitty performances and he's back in business right? Best English player and all that...

Awesome player. His ability to keep the ball under pressure and in tight spaces is exceptional. I wish City had the same mindset as some and got rid as he's a great weapon in their arsenal.
