Looks like a guy who has been lured into stopping longer than was necessary, now he's only "here for the beer"... cant blame him really its symptomatic of how the club is being run.
Suspect that unless there is a major problem with our other front men, Cavani has already played his last game for United.

If he manages to get us some critical goals to grasp 4th place or (extremely unlikely) to win the CL then he’ll be a success and all this won’t matter. Given his inability to play full games or twice in one week he is more of an emergency plan b, someone who can break the deadlock in a tight game with a moment of magic.

If he doesn’t deliver that by the end of his contract he can be rightly written off more miss than hit.
Yep, good post.

Yeah in hindsight should have let him go in the summer and bought in a younger version

We had to work hard to get him to stay the extra year, and then we brought Ronaldo in.

He looked redundant, then he played one great game alongside Ronaldo, and we wondered if that could work.
I think that was literally the one time we saw them together, and it work!

Bit frustrating this. Really need Edi to be stepping up to help after what’s happened with Greenwood.

I don’t want to think he’s deliberately swerving games but perhaps he’s not quite willing to get on the pitch unless he’s feeling 100% at this stage of his career.

It's pathetic.

I can understand criticism for poor performances, lack of work rate, acting disrespectful to the club on social media, breaking the law, etc...there's actually a lot to be legitimately critical of...but you can do that while still being supportive..

But even that isn't enough and we have to start slagging off and abusing players, and not for legitimate reasons, buy for things like being injured, or for choosing to play for us, or defending themselves from made up tabloid stories

Honestly people wonder why our players are "dislikeable"...just look at the posts in threads like this or the shite on social media. Why as a player would you have any inclination to go out and give your all for these clowns?

I honestly think the most toxic thing about United is fast becoming the fanbase. If it isn't already. Particularly the online element

Cavani has been already a success considering the role he was brought for and the expectations for him. He was very good and fulfilled his role last season. He's just now staying longer than what he should have stayed. We should have let him go in Jan imo.

Unfortunately it's mostly the end that sticks more in mind eventually than the beginning.

This thread has turned into such a copy/paste of PSG forums 2 years ago, it's quite funny (well not really).

Cavani only looks a failure to me because of Martial's downfall. He was supposed to come and be Martial's understudy but now we want him to be a starter who makes a big impact every game.

is there any player at United that nearly every poster on here doesn't constantly slag off for every possible conceivable reason?

If he's injured he's injured. We signed him for free and then convinced him to stay another year due to his performances on the pitch.

He's hardly ruining the club and he was hardly meant to be a long term solution for anything. And id much rather have had him around the last two years than not

Do you lot ever read back through threads like this and realise what a bunch of petty little children you sound like?
The same @noodlehair who posted this in another thread. . .

I don't agree Rashford has been even more inconsistent over a longer period...well actually I do but only because Martial was so consistently shite.
So one player has been at the club a year & half, crying off sick multiple times winning nothing. The other won a few things, & stagnated. So all in all both probably need/needed to be moved on.

All this to say, do you ever read back through threads like this and realise what a petty little child you sound like? People in glass houses eh.

The Cavani United spell hill is a terrible one to die on. Coming in on a free doesn’t mean you get to pick & choose when you turn up. I’d much rather have had a striker more committed to playing games in the last 2 years but maybe that’s just me. You’re right, injuries can’t be helped but multiple extended stays away from the club can.
Just sounds like excuses to me.
Doesn’t sound like, it is. You go from the faux outrage when people perceive someone to not be working hard on the pitch to posters excusing the fact this guy often refuses to even go out on the pitch in the first place.

really? is this what happened with him in France?
Not exactly in the way it unfolded but you also had part of the fans saying "he's very professionnal, he gives everything on the pitch" and the other part saying "well maybe but running around like a headless chicken doesn't make his match great, plus if he really was that professionnal he wouldn't regularly and unilateraly extend his own holidays". After he decided not to extend his contract for 2 months to play the final 8 with PSG, you couldn't find a whole lot of Cavani supporters left among PSG fan though.

Embarrassing that the the club essential begged him to stay over the summer when he couldn't be more disinterested about playing for us.

The fan worship has also always been a bit odd given how much our other players get shit for anything they do.

Reminds me of the Ander Herrera love in even after he rejected all the clubs offers and slagged us off for not offering him silly wages after leaving for free to become a benchwarmer. He's viewed with the same rose tinted glasses because he's a passion merchant as well

We should have let him go. There's definitely some double standard just because he runs a lot when he rarely makes the pitch to run in the first place. So why are we even criticizing Ronaldo If being 35 is enough to get a pass? or Pogba for going to Dubai or anyone else for wanting to leave the club. Cavani is all 3 rolled in one. Wantaway who is always either crocked or on holiday. Stop giving this guy a pass if you're just going to turn around and throw others under the bus for all those things.

You blame Ole? I'm not quite sure how much to blame he is there.

Mata: we've been systematically extending peripheral players for years. The club, not the manager.

Pogba: the writing has been on the wall for two years now but we've tried to stay on the "preserve value/brand asset" track. If anything, it quite clearly hampered him because he couldn't plan or execute anything with a view to life/team without Pogba but, instead, had to do anything conducive to him signing on, which he was never going to do until the very end -if that- as he had everything going for him/Raiola.

Matic: see Pogba uncertainty. Can't go and sign Paul's replacement, nor the right partner for him. You don't really know for a fact what your midfield needs because it is pretty contingent on the two season Pogba-sized question mark. So you bide that time relying on a former quality player that has lost his legs completely.

Greenwood: clearly not on Ole. We should have gone for our future CF last Summer, with Cavani only staying as a backup/late sub option. Not rotation, backup. We got Cristiano instead, which was absolute madness, only made more obvious and noticeable once our most promising youngster since Cristiano removed himself from the equation.

Lingard he probably should have sold. Martial was quite clearly out of favour, but not sold either. Those I do think was his call, not the club's.

Thing is, I don't think the manager has had that much authority on who actually gets signed on, so not surprised they are averse to discarding anyone and that's where I think the club contemplates the manager's wishes more. Result, bloated squads conforming dysfunctional First XIs.

Not an Ole keyboard warrior or anything, just think we are deluding ourselves if we think that will change with Ole gone. If it does, it will be because this new "consultant in the background" stuff ends up working. I'm hopeful, but... it's the hope that kills you.
Yes I blame him. He okayed the extension of many pointless players, wasted money on poor players but obviously he isn't alone in the blame

Statistically Cavani hasn’t been doing much running on the pitch anyway. Last season he was, this season his pressures, distance covered, etc. per 90 is down with Rashford/Ronaldo levels.
I haven't seen the stats to confirm that, but it would back my eye test. Especially when he's started, he hasn't pressed much at all this season. I would like to see the stats to actually confirm this.

Why as a player would you have any inclination to go out and give your all for these clowns?
Because they're some of the highest paid players in world football and should have some professional pride. Why should the fans give some of these guys passes when they're earning more in a week than a lot of fans do in 5+ years? At the absolute bare minimum, we should expect our players to be available to play and give their all when they're on the pitch.

He's been like that since his first major injury ruled him out of the WC2018 QF. He watched from the bench kicking himself as a fat Suárez spent all game playing solo against France's backline and fishing for free kicks.

That was after a brace in R8. Minutes before collapsing (the clip we got on continuous play when CR signed) he had been signalling to the bench something was off but, at 2-1, they ignored it. Oops. He then spent the entire Summer out and got no proper rest or preseason.

That was basically the end of his peak form and the start of his injury-dogged last years. It clearly upset him and has since been quite clearly averse to playing when not feeling right and managing fitness to make the big games. This is both for club and country and it made sense considering 70% of the games PSG played in a season were actually pointless dead rubbers.

That was quite clearly the deal. Given the original remit was acting as a backup striker, impact sub, bringing his experience, etc. it made sense. If we suddenly end up finding he is our best/only actual striker then you are in a spot of bother.

It's all our own doing really.

All the doubts I had for this season have come true. He was just as injury prone last season but the April purple patch fooled us.

I will only respect a player who actually gives a feck about this club. I’m done with signing players who treats Manutd no better than a Chinese club just to pocket the money. Not just the board the fans have also forgotten what this club should mean to players coming here. As soon as a high profile player signs for this club not even in their prime tbh, the way fans start singing their names and create chants and songs for them with them doing feck all or even kicking a ball is just downright embarrassing. It’s almost as if we are thankful for their mere presence at this club. Have some dignity ffs. We still are Manchester United, an institution even if we aren’t the same at this moment in time but we still are relevant, a behemoth of a football club not a washed up entity.

How many more di Marias, falcao, zlatans and Cavanis of this world you would like to go through to kick back some self respect in you ? They come here in their twilight years for a reason. At least Ronaldo can claim to have an affiliation to this club to some extent. Even then I can’t take him seriously when he says he loves this club. Oh yeah, that’s why you ran away to Madrid after we developed you all those years and now when you are all washed up, your love for united kicked in ? Give me a break. We still have fond memories of you but please don’t take us for a ride. You love nobody but yourself just like the rest of them washed up lot.

Why does being able to go and watch a boxing match mean that you should also be able to play 90 mins of high intensity sport ?

Whats your problem with him being at a social event in Manchester, When he is unavailable to play tomorrow?
The guy picks & chooses not only when he plays but when he can be bothered to be in the country. He’s rarely been available consistently enough to be missed & for all the bluster when he’s on the pitch his attitude towards the club is questionable.

As for my problem with him being at a social event when injured? I don’t have one, I reposted a video with 3 words attached. Being unfit to play quite clearly doesn’t make one unfit to live. I see so little of him on the pitch I took this outing as a chance to air a view, I hope he enjoyed his evening.

Good question. Who said it does?

Feck this guy.
Manchester is class. Warms my heart to see them taking such good care of the country's highest profile medical tourist. The United player for a day arrangement was also class.

Give me a break guys, this is Schweinsteiger situation all over where the club acts so star struck that it's happy to be used as a menstural rag for an aging player on his farewell tour.

WOW so he’s not injured then?
So many with their knickers in a twist

Does a player need to be wheelchair bound or something for you to class him injured? Genuine question.

Genuine question...what is going on in this thread? I’m not sure I understand. He was confirmed as injured ie. can’t play a competitive match due to injury. He goes to a boxing match as a leisure activity... and there is outrage? Or are these posts ironic? I’m really not sure.

I have a picture of Phil Jones at the cinema last night...is that not the same thing? Or when you’re injured, does that means you stay indoors? I really am at a loss as to what goes on in here sometimes.

You're being so disingenuous here, just because a few people questioned you. If that isn't what you meant, why did you say 'feck this guy' in response to a video of him watching a boxing match ? I'd love to understand.

Some people, a depressingly large amount, simply cannot find a way to express their emotions without attacking someone else. It’s ok to be angry or frustrated and still accept that no one is to blame. In an ideal world Cavani himself would prefer not to be injured; the fans would prefer him not to be injured; and the club would prefer him not to be injured. This isn’t an ideal world. Questioning what a player does in his free time is a good way to weed out some of the less emotionally intelligent people on this board.

Topic aside but Jesus Christ show some self awareness. Emotional intelligence starts with holding one's composure in the face of disagreement. I'd hazard to guess the conversation on whether he's worth the stay is for most people quite different from speculations about why he's injured. He isn't worth it for some of the drawbacks that are cited and accepted in Pogba and Ronaldo threads, availability and age.

I agree with you- not sure if you’re saying it’s me who needs to show self awareness or the people angry at Cavani for having a life outside football. In hindsight it looks like it was probably the wrong decision to renew, and I’d be astonished if he signs again this summer. I don’t think it was necessarily an obvious error to renew his contract when the decision was made.
