My issue with him is he presses when he doesn’t need to, exposing a massive hole in midfield. He chased someone into Chelsea’s corner flag, no United player went with him and suddenly Chelsea could counter into 40 yards of space. It’s so poor by a CM and that’s why we have leaked so many goals this season.

By having the ball.

If you look all over the first XI, none of them had that many chances or touches of the ball.

Chelsea's defenders had between 77 and 93 touches of the ball. And between 61 and 69 passes. Ours had between 33 and 39 touches with 20 and 26 passes.

You build from the back.

I'm not willing to throw any individual player under the bus till we have a real manager. Seems like I'm in the minority.
Exactly.

So it's not a case of digging out individuals for the sake of it. It's just a fact that for the team to have plenty of the ball the lads on the pitch have to individually look after it. There’s no way around that

First and second touch crucial. Then weight of pass.

Scott can't be so poor in rhose areas and stay in the team. He's not the only one though, this is most of them.

Exactly. Having a manager implement and coach possesion football is important but so is having footballers who can pass the football. Pep isn't going to get a team of Mctominays to dominate the ball 70 per centof the time. He's a terrible passer of the ball and aside from the odd dribble, mediocre on the ball in general. This one moment where Rashford found space in between Chelsea's defence summed it up well. The pass was easy, and could have created a good chance but Mctominay over hit it and dragged Rashford towards the corner flag.
Yeah I clocked that as well and said out loud to myself this is the problem. We're never getting anywhere with players over or under hitting simple passes.

The Aaron Wan Bissaka of midfielders. Might actually even be unfair to AWB.

Don’t understand why anyone is surprised by the obvious fact that McT is not an EPL level player. Pull never see why people jumped all over Fred in that double act, more energy, more tackles, more passes, ore goals, and it wasnt McT.

The paucity of midfield players since the heyday of a Keane, Coles, etc is nightmarish. Not helped by Woodward's choice of coaches and his unswerving devotion to choosing players for click bait and shirt sales ahead of anything connected with ability and fitting into the clubs needs.

If McT is anything than other a last resort squad player, then expect the terrible midfield issues to continue. He should get 1 out of 10 most games, only because he sometimes kicks the ball in the right direction , not due to actually finding someone in the same colour shirt, an academy player does not necessarily mean they deserve a place in the team.

It's unfortunate that one of the few players that seems to have the right attitude and mentality, is so clearly lacking in ability.

We will find it extremely difficult if he is still a regular starter next season.

I am always amazed that, despite the hundreds of millions that have been spent, he is an unquestioned starter. I wouldn't be surprised if he is still the starter next season. He is one of the few who still play with a slight bit of passion and commitment.

I don't think he has the right attitude considering how often he refuses to move an extra yard to show up for the ball and just jogging back slowing when we got counter attacked
he just utilize those dirty works to pretend that he has "passion"

Not one peep about how the manager set us up today? Did you watch the game? We sat back behind the ball in the second half and let them have it. We looked like Villarreal at Anfield.
I did aye.

Even in this setup, an isolated 37 year old centre forward saw more of the ball than this joker.

He's had about 4 years now, it was plain as day after 1 he just wasn't good enough. I don't see how anyone can be defending him anymore.

Jose gave his debut, Ole made him a starting 11 player. No fan of Jose either - he pretty much sabotaged the West Ham game by playing him at CB after the board refused to spend money on Maguire.
Well what else you expected Ole to do after the board failed to close the deal with Bellingham and Carmavinga? The same board who failed to help RR getting any midfield reinforcement last January eventhough Dennis Zakaria was available for mere 7 millions? It's miracle Ole could bring the best of this mediocre player while the other "world class" managers failed to do it.

McT hiding might explain why our defenders struggle to have more passes too as he'd be one of, if the player with the one they'd exchange the most passes with. We do build from the back but if anyone if missing from the chain, it affects everyone.
Our CBs numbers are massively expected by the fact that one of the midfielders hide. Compare it with Kante and Jorginho, how they kept showing for Thiago and Rudiger specially. McT being more visible would impact everyone passing options (the CBs between themselves, the CBs to the full backs, the defence to the midifield).
It was like playing with a player sent off in midfield.

Staggering stat not that we needed it to know that McTominay isn't and has never been good enough to play in our midfield. I'd previously thought he could be a squad player for us but he is another reminder of the mediocrity the club has come to accept. If there were a positive at least the lad appears to try rather than the rest of the crap in that dressing room.

For what it’s worth, the ability to retain possession at the back is also extremely reliant on a keeper who can get involved in the passing. Mendy’s a long way from being the best goalie with the ball at his feet but he is still streets ahead of DDG and his constant long passes straight to the opposition. A lot of Chelsea’s defenders touches came from working the ball around between them and their goalkeeper. 58% pass completion from DDG vs 78% for Mendy says it all really.

But yeah, McTominay’s inability to show for the ball makes a bad thing worse.

It has been pretty obvious over the last number of seasons that this guy isn't good enough. How we haven't invested into midfield and allowed it to get this bad should he another stain on ed Woodward

Yeah but if he'd played for us in 1922 instead when everyone tried to carry the ball in a straight line up the pitch on solo runs he'd be world class.

When we got counter attacked, or when our defense is outnumbered, why he just always jog back slowly and casually like Pogba does? When was the last time he did a full-speed charge to defend and full the vacant space on teammates' behalf? - something Rooney and Tevez did hundreds of times in their time here.

I'm not sure what's more unbelievable the stat itself or the fact people are actually trying to deflect and defend McTominay.
In his defence (?) I think the fullbacks seem scared to give him the ball under any sort of pressure because they think he'll cough it up, which I think happened with Schneiderlin immediately upon his arrival here.

Well actually Jose, Ole, Carrick and Rangnick so far all thought he's good enough
So what is it? Is he good and is just underperforming because of current management? Or is he just shite? I’ll go with the latter.

This is really frustrating for me. When a player knows he needs to shield the back 4 but consistently lets balls in between the lines and never runs back.

I see other teams and I am jealous. Their forwards chase back doubling up, helping the team win the ball back.

It actually is a reason our CB pairing looks so bad, when our midfield is exposed, its 3 v 4 and our CB has to make a choice to step out to the ball or stay and let the man run, we saw this with the Havertz chance but the blame would be on Lindelof whereas McT was at fault.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Correct. IMO, McFred need to be got rid of. When these 2 play, we NEVER have control of midfield. Teams just zip through our midfield like it's not even there.
I don't know why people still talk about 'McFred' as if they are at a remotely similar level.

Fred has spent almost his entire time at the club being played out of position, in a spot that highlights his weaknesses while making it more difficult to show his strengths. And yet he was still significantly better than McTominay. Since Ralf came in and finally started playing him in his proper position, the same position that he is first choice for the #1 ranked national team in the world, he was our most in-form player until his injury.

Fred isn't amazing and could end up on the bench depending on who we sign for ETH, but he's miles above McTominay.

He reminds me of Cleverley/Gibson etc. One of those that you hold onto for too long because of CM transfer neglect and then they slowly tumble down the league. I’m expecting us to make a bid soon.

He's also a v. poor mans Jordan Henderson. Henderson has improved his overall game hugely in terms of passing which is far better than McT, but I could see McT doing a Henderson lite role where he covers for the defence/moves out wide etc. Basically being that runner that creates space for others and covers for others. Not suited for a 2 man midfield at all though.

He’s completed something like 50 passes in 2 games and in between given quotes about having balls and not being afraid to get on the ball, it’s like a parody.

Sums up the tone deaf nature of club and squad that Mct is walking round thinking he’s a leader, blissfully unaware of how bad he is. Like too many players under Ole he was built up and indulged rather than being made to work on his failings.

The thing is it's not like he doesn't try. Mctominay IS trying, but he's just not good enough.

He can't accelerate fast enough in tight situations, he can't tackle cleanly without fouling. His short passing game is far too inconsistent and needs too many touches before getting himself set.

Kante made him look an absolute fool. He knew as soon as Mctominay got the ball he could run in and nick it off him.

For some reason we seem insistent on playing these big 6'4 lumbering giants in midfield, I dont understand it. Compare to Chelseas midfield of Kante/Jorginho.

Matic still looks twice the player he is and his legs have gone.

Ragnick stated he is a future captain at the club, and fans actually think ralf is not to blame for the dross we have seen for the past 7 months...

It's nuts that far better players in lingard, matic, pogba and mata are all leaving for free whilst mctominay will still be here handicapping our midfield and has escaped any bad treatment from match day fans because much like ole he talks about pashun and all that rubbish in interviews

He’s so shit it’s unbelievable. I actually said to my son, imagine how that game would have panned out if Kante and McT had swapped teams? It actually makes me hopeful. We might not need a load of new signings. Once we replace the a completely hopeless players like him with someone genuinely good it will improve the whole team to a ridiculous extent.
I think we do need a few signings because of the amount of first team players leaving.

But I take your point. A couple of players with the right qualities and I think we improve a lot. We have no creativity in DM or from the full backs, for example.

I also think a top manager makes Fred a very valuable player in an attacking-minded pressing role, I think Solskjaer always used him wrong, he's no DM. A top manager also makes Sancho a world class player rather than the OK one we've seen in red so far. A few more examples for sure.

He’s a fraud and I don’t say that lightly. Players run off him for fun every single game. He ambles about the pitch in weird positions and doesn’t want the ball…then comes out with the big man interviews after loses he was largely responsible for. A lot of fans lap it up too. Fraud.
Agreed, I have consistently said that he hides in big games, particularly when the crowd get on the players backs. He has the occasional decent game and I think he has the skills and physical attributes to be a Premiership player, just not for a top club that wants to win trophies

I actually think Cleverley was the better player, at least for us. Different standards in our team now but our main issue with him was he was too basic in his passing.

McTominay doesn't have that sense of the game around him he just gets lost. There was one game in 2020 he played alongside Pogba and it was genuinely like watching kids football he had no idea where to be and he hid behind players.

He's just another youth player who has had his shot and isn't good enough. Fine to the fill squad for couple of seasons but then they should move on.

Give his game time to Garner next season and we'll be better for it.

He's been around long enough to know full well that he's not good enough. It wouldn't matter who you put next to him. Fred is miles better than him, and even he's been played out of his preferred position. I wouldn't even bother having him as a squad player, he's that average.

I didn't realise he was already 25. :nervous: Thought he was 22/23, he's becoming a Lingard.

I agree with you here.

I actually thought McT was combative and looked like he actually wanted the ball in the first half, the second half he was quite obviously told to hold his position a bit more which led to the stat, of which I haven't seen published anywhere else.

The teams performance in the second half was the cause of it rather than any individuals,
Exactly.

I'm sure an experienced football man like Ralf Rangnick is grateful to have a load of armchair Pep's to tell him stuff... even if it's probably fabricated.

Yep. It's like people expect one player to make all the difference.

Also, he created three goal scoring chances in the past 2 matches (none were taken) and yet, apparently, he "can't pass". Those armchair Pep's must've been distracted by posting their revolutionary comments to see.
