We have accountants and financial experts at the club who worry about that stuff. If we're happy to spend £50m on a player it's because we can afford it without having to sacrifice other key targets. It's not like they look at the bank balance and then go "shit, now we're short by £10m and can't afford de Jong"

There never used to be an obsession amongst football fans about transfer fees. But since social media took off its become a sad and boring way to point score against rivals
I don't understand your point about accountants and financial experts. What are you trying to say? Fans shouldn't worry because Accountants look after it?? Money doesn't grow on trees, it's the Glazers not the Saudis/Emiratis writing blank cheques. If United overpaying for Martinez and FdJ of course they have to make sacrifices on their other target positions. By overpaying on those fees, they might have ruled themselves out from making a Malacia style signing at right back for example.

Masters of negotiation. Imagine what they'll now expect for Antony. The club is run by absolute morons. Murtough isn't even close the being the slick operator that people make him out to be. Utterly insane fee for a defender from the dutch league. FFS attackers from that shitty league have never gone for that. fecking hell.

Should have gone all in on De Ligt, easily worth the 10-20m extra that Bayern will nab him for.
Yeah that's the part which is a big drawback of paying this much for him

No chance he'd choose us over Bayern

Got a chance of signing that Clauss if we are actually remotely interested of course

The guy you want to go for instead was a defender from that shitty league signed for 60% more than we are getting Martinez for. Not sure he had proven more

People forgetting highly rated defenders who are not fully proven go for big fees.

Dias - 61 mil
Laporte - 58
White - 50
Militao - 45
Upemacano - 40
Of that list only Dias has really been worth the money. The rest have various degrees of question marks over them. Maybe not Militao since Real have been successful but he did have a couple of shockers in the knockout CL games.

50m on Martinez is a big gamble, not sure it was really necessary but we'll see how it plays out. With United of late, usually not well.

There's no doubt it's a high fee when you look at the bare facts of it. A Dutch league defender that is not fully proven for his national team. I think we're paying for the fact Ajax weren't desperate to sell him this year and to please ETH.

But as with any signing, it has the potential to either look very cheap or a highly dubious piece of business depending on his performances. Given he is a front footed player with high technique it is quite likely to dramatically lean one way or the other. I don't see him being nondescript.

You are literally contradicting yourself here. De ligt came from the Dutch league did absolutely nothing at Juventus to justify the 100 million euro price tag but here you are moaning that we should have signed him. Unbelievable Jeff

Laporte as well for sure! The other 2 are young CBs. Everyone is just expensive these days

Players are too expensive now. Its the reality. I hope we avoid the tendency to use the value of fees against the new signings. Its not their fault. Apparently Ajax fans respect a lot not only his footbal skills but his mentality and commitment.

Arteta wanted Martinez for his versatility. He can play LB, LCM and LCB at pretty high levels.

Zinchenko is the alternative after we lost out to Martinez, although from an Arsenal point of view it doesn't matter, we had no need for another option at centre back. Its LCM with Xhaka's form, and LB with Tierney injury problems that we wanted to address, and Zinchenko will address this. Im glad we moved on quickly and picked up Zinchenko.

So is he going to pre-season? Or is he staying put in Manchester?

By the miserable tone this thread returns to outside of the jokes, his player performance thread will be an absolute hoot.

@MyOnlySolskjaer should open the thread when he plays his first game. Otherwise all the miserable posts from here will be posted in that thread.

"Can't believe we spent 5.41 million more on the fee than what I expected.

Also same with wages, can't believe he got 4k more than i expected.

Moron news outlets spamming bullshit for extra clicks, fans lapping it up and blindly believing it and when it turns out to be bullshit they blame the club?

What else is new? As others have pointed out, either way, someone will complain. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. It's so easy to manipulate people.

This transfer reminds me of the Donny signing. Nothing to do with them coming from Ajax and more because they were both signed in a window, where we had a lot of glaring holes in other positions. Going in to this season I felt like we needed a #6, #8, right back, winger to pair with Sancho, long term replacement for Ronaldo and then potentially a short term replacement for Ronaldo. Martinez will be our 3rd signing and I still feel like we need another 3 or 4 after that.

I hope this is a case of right guy at the wrong time and we are signing him now because we believe he is too good to miss out on. I don't have much of an opinion on his ability as I haven't seen enough of him, but I would have found it easier to believe if it didn't appear like we were after Timber first.

Despite my slight scepticism, as soon as he signs that all goes out the window and it's all aboard the hype train. Our central defence isn't without it's problems and I will be praying he is the man to solve them.

We tried to sign Timber, when he said he won't be moving this season we quickly moved to Martinez. This clearly shows ten Hag feels our CBs are not good enough when it comes to playmaking.

Every ManUtd fan believed we need a 6 who is defensively stronger, ten Hag is desperate to sign de Jong after signing Eriksen.

Maybe how fans see and how EtH reads the game is very different. There are holes for sure but maybe manager thinks the players we signed are of higher priority.

Yeah, the fact that he was seemingly second-choice to Timber kind of undermines the idea that he was deemed too good to miss out on even though there were more pressing issues.

Our priorities are a little hard to understand. We looked better stocked at LB than RB, yet we bought a left-back. And we're now buying a CB despite having four good options. In fact I'd argue that if there was one position we didn't need to strengthen this season, it was CB (unless we were dropping Maguire but it doesn't seem so).

Hopefully it all comes off but I'm struggling to get it.
