I think it is stupid spending that money on one of our stronger positions.

I rather we got 2 fantastic midfielders for big money. If we get De Jong as well I do not complain as much though.

If Ronaldo goes we also badly need a striker.
We really are not that strong in that position for the way eth wants to play. Think about it for a minute. Maguire can’t play high line and has a very slow recovery speed. Lindelof is the same but even worse in the air and lacking physicality. Varane has the technical and physical tools but has injury issues. Bailly is perhaps our best player for this system but is inconsistent and has injury worries. We needed this signing. Happy to spend the 50m to bolster this position for which I think we are NOT strong in

Hoping the work permit comes through quickly as these things can take a fair bit of time to process.

I think he'll be a hit with the fans. I really miss passionate players with real fire. Our current squad is really lacking in that department. He has a great passing range as well which is also something that we've been missing. Not really bothered about how much we paid for him, not sure why anyone cares.

You’re negative with every signing

Both Malacia and now Martinez rubbish.

Hopefully you’re wrong. The other Dutch posters think both will do great.
Sign Frenkie de Jong and I will be fecking jubilant :wenger:

Martinez and Malacia are a bit similar, they have a fantastic attitude, but Im just not sure they can do it against bigger opponents (in the literal sense).

That is a worrying thing to say about one of the most expensive defenders ever. You’d really want to be buying the finished product or world class potential at that price.

Perfectly summarizes the common consensus about him. One more is his passing range someone highlights. Not sure how he performs in EPL.
I understand the concerns over him adapting to the league, but that happens with every player that is new to the PL. Lukaku for example had a body made for the PL, but he didn't know how to use it for aerial advantage. I'll be optimistic until I see him getting regularly targeted and being beaten in the air.

As for the passing range, I think that's a huge factor for EtH. He might be thinking of absorbing pressure through our left side and then switch play to give Sancho 1 on 1 opportunities. Really want to see Martinez in action as he and Eriksen are the players who can affect the first team, Malacia will probably remain backup for at least this season.

Not disagree with you. But, i think it more important about if they can do it against mid- and lower table opponents consistently. They are or will be bought to transform our play more quickly and also increase the depth. So, it’s in fact a team building issue.

Dont think you can ever buy a truly finished product from the Dutch league. It's just different game here.

Apart from Luis Suarez I cant really name any recent instant premier league successes from the Dutch league.

Is it a tall order to get people to stop making fun of his height?

I am quite satisfied with the new and improved United. We're still slow to conclude deals, we still solely dependent on our manager to call the shots simply because our scouting department is pretty much useless and we still end up being taken to the the cleaners but....its evident that something has changed...right?

On a positive note I think that Lisandro Martinez would do well with us. His height is a concern but he's got great attitude and he can play multiple roles which is always an asset

Based on the stats from previous season, he will improve the CB's passing and defending department by leaps and bounds.

I do agree, the price is to high, and he will be targeted in the air by weaker teams. He will end up having the occasional good game, but in the end I do think he will end up being a player that didn't live up to the price tag. I hope I end up being wrong.

I could see him playing at CDM against big teams like City with Varane and Maguire at CB. However he prefers the left which is where FDJ prefers to play.

Finally, I am very happy. Maguire can't defend forward and has a lot of problems with space behind him. Martinez is used to this and his (cross)pass is excellent. That is key to the style of play of Ten Hag. So, with Martinez we can finally defend more forward and with space behind our last line. His passing is very good so we can play on possession. Thats why the signing of Eriksen and hopefully also De Jong are very important.

Be interested to see who he's partnered with. Whatever your opinion on the quality of our 4 centre backs they are international class and first teamers for their respective countries (and very strong countries too).

I'm going Maguire and Martinez (or M and M ...sorry :D ) although they both might seem a bit slow. If Maguire's form doesn't pick up then possibly Varane and Martinez.
Them both being slow is why they won't play together, or at least why it won't last long.

I personally think we are over paying especially considering he was clearly our second choice behind Timber, but I guess that is the issue having the manager identifying the targets

From what I’ve seen though he is a good player, the height maybe an issue as a centre back, but lots of people seem to be thinking he maybe playing in midfield ? (Though not sure if that’s just wishful thinking?) Think if not there is a good chance he may mainly be back up to Varane and Maguire.

Hopefully now we will sell some centre backs as we have 7 if Martinez is gonna be a centre back. That’s too many. But there arn’t any strong rumours of anyone being intrested in out centre backs so that’s worrying.
