The most impressive part is that for one we have got good value for money. Martinez, Malacia and Eriksen for roughly £60 or so million - and probably only £350.000 in wages. By our standards, that is amazing

A striker? Are we allowing Ronaldo to go then? If not, Martial and Ronaldo for next season will be enough. Our winger situation, on the other hand, is very light, with only Rashford and Sancho as our first team options. Elanga, Amad, Pellistri and Garnacho are not ready yet.

Our most important areas of need this season were DM, CM, RB, CF, CB and RW. So far we have bought a backup LB, a CB and an AM. I dont think we are going to get a traditional DM, so I atleast hope we get a RB and a forward(RW or CF).

I wonder if the club is worried that Ronaldo might not turn up even after pre season is over to really try a force a move away.
Ronaldo isn't that stupid to put himself in a legal nightmare, he's on 500k a week isn't he? That's 26m over the year he's contracted, plus if we can prove we had a 30m bid for him which he rejected, he'd be in a bad position to argue why he didn't fulfil his contract.

You could argue we have got a CM in Eriksen and DM in De Jong if we get him. When we say DM, ten Hag may be thinking of positioning, rather than attributes (tough tackler, etc).

De Jong plays in a double 6 pivot, which technically makes him a DM.

Maybe, in ten Hag's eyes, we have a DM (if we get De Jong), CM (Eriksen), CF (Martial is back) and a CB (Martinez). Just a RW now.

He surely wouldn't do that. He's under contract!

True, it would be a massive move and basically nothing more than a last ditch attempt at getting out. If we had CL I’m not sure Ronaldo would have missed the pre season tour.

Like I wouldn’t be surprised if he picks up an “injury”before the season starts and ends up leaving.

Still this might be massively unfair on him.

Pretty obvious that after we sign a midfielder, we'll still be looking for a forward of some description, versatile right wing or a number 9, and ideally a right back once we've ditched AWB.

And a third goalkeeper. But might as well just promote a youngster than sign the dross keepers we've been linked to.

This, plus also the age variance is perfect.

We have done very very good business, albeit after taking time but for the first time we have brought players who are going to bring something to the table.

All are technical players, players who can pass, run, have the agility.

Not the Amad transfer window period where we spent money signing players who up to now are not first team contributors.

If we are expecting 3 more players ( FDJ included), even if we get 2 only, then it's a perfect start for John Murtough. But if it's 2 only FDJ must be one of them.

But 3 more players, even if FDJ doesn't come then it will be okay, in that we shall be curing the disease of other positions step at a time..

We have a plan. It's now visible.

I personally really like what I've seen from Dalot in this new system. I think he and Sancho look really really good on that right side. I kinda get that we don't have any reliable backup though. Would be nice if Laird could take his chance in the preseason. AWB and Williams are useless. Good to know we're looking at a striker. Martial has done really well so far tbf to him, but it's hard to trust him after how frequently he's gone through poor form after a brief good run of form.

There is no chance Ronaldo starts the first game is there? Fitness aside, if he hasn't taken any training or tactics sessions for a brand new system EtH isn't going to let him start the first league game, surely?

Dalot needs a massive step up this year. He was hilariously poor overall last season

IMO If he misses three weeks of pre season then he should be sitting on the bench for the first three weeks of the season.

ten Hag has said numerous times that Ronaldo is not for sale and I doubt we'll buy a right back unless we can offload AWB. We definitely need a right winger, though.
Didn't Sancho play RW last game and did really well?
Didn't watch the game so might be confused.

He'll still make mistakes defensively (very difficult not to as a full back in an ETH side due to how much is demanded of you going forward) but I think he suits the attacking transition really well. He definitely did have some good performances under Rangnick also, even if there were plenty of poor performances to go with them. I certainly thought he performed better than AWB last season. I'm happy with him as 1st choice tbh.

He is just not that good, could be OK as a back up right back but can't defend well and goong forward his end product is dire. This reminds me if when some of our fans were convinced pereira could solve our midfield woes

To be fair Cavani and Greenwood are effectively out with just Martial coming back. Unless we promote at least one striker we are definitely short.

Greenwood was a great option as could play right wing or a striker at a decent level for either position.

Martial back on form ticks a similar couple of options from LW or striker, but we could definitely do with another RW capable of being a very good finisher from a central position as well.

Our big risk is that even if Ronaldo signs he is 38 and can't play every game. If Martial isn't playing regularly I'd be concerned his form will quickly become poor again. Then we are left without a vital third option.

Martial might be solved by him playing at least a third of the games from the left wing and a third from striker. But even this is no guarantee that he'll be good enough. We can't forget he has been very very poor for two seasons.

Sancho could be a third from left and a third or two from right, but that then just leaves a third for Rashford on the left which will create contract renewal issues.

A very tough balance that will only be more difficult with an extra forward, but it would be a huge risk not making that signing.

The more you weigh it up the more Pellistri and Amad don't make sense. For that money we could have had a starter, instead we have potentials who frankly aren't much different to the potential of Rashford or Martial in the sense none of them feel like guaranteed positive outcomes.
