Looking over my shoulder.
What’s happened to him? He was clean through on goal with that ball over the top on the half way line. Perfect ball for him to use his pace and run into, only for him to be badly outrun. He didn’t even look to go close to full pelt, same as Shaw who also lost a foot race. That combined should make a two goal difference - one either way.

He was also lazy, having Bruno run past him to chase a poor first touch from Rashford. Terrible performance and worryingly slow.

There was a situation yesterday right around the edge of the box, where Bruno overlapped him and would essentially be free on goal. But as always our Rashford tried to shoot through or inbetween to defenders.
The opportunity at 00:17. He should have played Bruno through. No doubt that one would have sent it out of the stadium but you can't be missing teammates in a system that relies on using options wisely. Bruno might even have taken it and found him on a cutback for a nice tap in. The possession from Brentford's third goal came from losing the ball while turning goalwards into congestion when he should have been looking for a lay off.
I think his problem is when he decides to shoot he just puts his head down and stops reading the game. He will wear on ETH's patience doing that.

Marcus Rashford is the player who worries me the most. Bruno runs hot and cold, but at least he runs hot from time to time. Maguire had a horror season in 21/22 but he was decent in prior seasons and has started this season in better form. McFred are being asked to do that which they cannot do and on some level can be excused for their poor performances. Imagine asking a guitarist to play the piano at Royal Albert Hall -- no less a disaster than asking McFred to control midfield.

But Rashford? There is no excuse for his continued poor form extending into this season so far. Balls were there to be won and he doesn't win them and clean chances are there to be taken and he wastes them. He was once a footballer who played with joy, but using his pace and power to complete guile, but guile is gone and his pace and power are easily defended now. He looks a shattered footballer.

lost confidence in himself on the pitch. I do not remember when was the last time he had a decent game. I really can’t. Has he dribbled past anyone in the last year? Don’t think so also. A body without a soul on the pitch. Too bad considering he is playing for his boyhood club.

Massively overrated due to being English

he only got his chance because we started the season with Rooney as our only striker. Admittedly he took his chances and is as cool as cucumber in front of goal, in 1 on 1s

But he really is that good a footballer.

When he was playing in the U18 league he was nowhere near the hottest prospect, a lad I know who is now semi pro kept him in his pocket numerous times in the U18 league playing for City.

He wasn't even considered quick, the fullback lad i know, said he could give him half a yard start and still beat him to the ball.

A lucky lad, in the right place at the right time and took his chance well

But not good enough for United

Come on now. Does that ring true to you?

Your eyes have seen Rashford at 18. You know he was lightening quick.

I’ve taken him out of my FPL team already. I thought he looked really hungry in preseason and may come back with a point to prove. He’s wilted to the same level as the worst of last season already. How he can be considering asking the club for the kind of wages he’ll surely think his overall package is worth is just crazy at this stage. You’re certainly paying mostly for the brand and almost nothing to do with football anymore. It’s also taking up an all important starting space in our attack which is broken and needs fixing quick.

But most U18 premier league forwards are quick, he just wasn't the quickest and the City fullback who played in the Uefa league was a lot quicker and he's now a semi pro playing in Sweden.

If you remember Uniteds academy was really under funded and a shambles. LVG was trying too improve it from top to bottom, we didn't exactly have the best talent in the country. Rashford was the best we had at that time, yet he was nowhere near the best prospect in the league. Now we are expecting him to perform at the highest level, when he just isn't that good. Cool in front of goal and great on breaks but he's not got the technical all round ability to be a top player.

When he burst on the scene he was a fearless kid without all the pressure and expectation. Now he has this massive celebrity, pressure, constant scrutiny.. and the biggest part of making it to the very top top elite level is mental.

He also doesn’t read the game very well which by 24 and being in the first team as long as he has, he should have that now. Can’t use youth inexperience anymore. He doesn’t look up, makes the wrong decision constantly, runs into players, passes and crosses right into the feet of the opposition over and over again. Something just isn’t sitting right with him and with a World Cup this year and his place in this team in jeopardy somethings needs to give very soon.

Your mate must have been off the scale fast then.

I know we're all piling on Rashford right now and I'm the same. But to say he wasn't that quick is a bit over the top.

Agree his allround game isn't polished enough but then I still think its possible for him to be a very good player for years to come.

Vardy is no better on the ball than Rashford and look at the career he's ended up with.

It's about him sticking to what he's good at, defining what his game is and getting that enjoyment/enthusiasm back.

Rashford had a season where he got 24 G&A in 37 games in the premier league. Your pal is playing semi pro in Sweden.

An article on the guardian today describes him as a puffing workhorse . I thought you huff and puff after you run yourself to the ground. When was the last time he did that?

Anything to fill the word count these days.

excluding penalties it was 18 G+A in 37 games which is not particularly impressive

he is typical 2nd tier PL level player rated 80-83 on fifa who is rightly a fringe player in England and he should never be a starting player (a rotational player at best) for a club with aspiration for titles

I usually like Jonathan Liu‘a writing but that piece is utter nonsense. He clearly didn’t watch Rashford last year.

Rashford was positive in pre-season, enjoying training and the new manager.

He looks like a player that is realizing he's no good in competitive games at this level, everything he tries to do doesn't come off where as before it'd be like 40% would work out, it's more than just counter attack, he was able to be somewhat effective in various scenarios of play. Maybe he has to drop down a level as I believe he's gone into this season with good intentions and training rather than this thing of not wanting to be out there playing and doing something else with his life.

Either way if he can't make it work this season we should let him go whether it be for a new start or to find his level

I think he is no longer a player suitable to play in highly competitive league under high stress environment. He is now a master of fecking up everything with his feet.

I'd just sell him to PSG (if they are really interested), and use the money to buy Antony or someone else.

Mad that he had the same stats as Sancho last year and is so far the same this year.

Seems low on confidence from what i have observed. He might be useful as part of a front 2 striker pairing, with Martial or Ronaldo as the other striker. Wingplay is not his area.

Stats are really only mad if one doesn't see the games to contextualise them. Sancho would snag Rashford's position from straight under him because of the gulf in performances beyond the numbers. Rashford would in fact end up outside the XI. He lost that to Elanga.

Meh. I will wait until Sancho performs his first season to the standard of an 80 million pound player.

Sancho has had chances as a LW and a RW and the results are the same. Rashford’s just a LW and was put on the right wing by and then got lost to Elanga.

Anyway, let’s see if Sancho ever gets an 18 g/a season in the PL.

The moment that happens then we can chuck Rashford in the bin.

This is way too many parallels that have nothing to do with the last. Rashford's prospects going forward won't be tied to some decent past season or someone else underperforming. That one season also doesn't make him a better player. The way the club even holds on to that 2020 season. Half our squad is overrated on the back of one season the club has refused to move on from.

It's not dips in form, it isn't a bad patch. His performances aren't inconsistent. It's a decline. An obvious, evident, undeniable decline over a significant period. I still don't understand the reluctance to accept that from some.

Players in their mid 20s who are shadows of who they were in their early 20s usually don't become much better in their late 20s. Development doesn't really often work like that. Hoping it will for Rashford is like hoping Barrymore makes a comeback

Let down unbelievably by the club and Solskjær. Has not been the same since his back injury, and to continue to play him in he build up to that injury was pretty appalling.

His back injury has nothing to do with the fact his reading of the game, decision making and even workrate is atrocious.

He runs. We see it. Performative, pointless runs in the 6th minute of the game to 'show the critics'. Ten minutes later if opposition are in ascendancy and it would be quite useful if he put in the same effort? Forget it. He'll be on the halfway line looking at his shoes.

But even ignoring all of this and giving the benefit of a huge doubt - if he had the fundamentals and basics nailed he could still contribute. But he doesn't. He can't read the game, he cannot anticipate, his positional awareness is awful and none of that is down to injury or previous managers

He's not the first player to play on painkillers. John Terry played pretty much his entire late 20s and 30s relying on them. He also delayed his surgery to go to the Euros with England, only to be a sparsely used sub and catch flack for missing a penalty.

When trying to asterisk stats, it’s important to still get them right. Otherwise, it looks like you are trying to make his stats look worse to fit an agenda.

Rashford playing as he did from 2019 to the start of 2021 would be England’s best LW and would be an important player in any team in the world. If (big if) he refinds that form then he would obviously be a first team player.

It's notneven the loss of form that does me in, it is the laziness.
Rashford does not have an excuse not to press.

I find myself using two of my three daily main forum posts as a newbie, on saying how much I hope Rashford and Maguire don't start. Sad, but the reality is we have no chance of a result against Liverpool should they play.

Hate to break it to you but even if we swapped them out we still have little hope of a result here.

Yep, but there's a different between a small chance/little hope and no chance at all. We need to move on from these two who are consistently our worst players.

I'll play along, so we remove Maguire in place of Varane I assume and Sancho for Rashford on left with feck knows off the right because they're all just as useless there? We'll still have a midfield of McFred, Bruno will still be Bruno and the rest speak for themselves. It's hard to say them two are consitently the worst when are whole team put in stinker after stinker. Can you honestly say the difference betweena standard Rashford and Sancho performance isn't negligible?

I'm not defending Rashford because his form has been indefensible but Terry as a centre back is different from an explosive attacking player.

It's just sad and infuriating seeing Rashford's decline as a Utd fan.

But it should be clear that whole injury thing was an excuse.

Rashord's issue is not that he is or was slow or lost his burst. It was terrible decision making and buying his own hype. He started to take on 3-4 defenders and run into walls. Started playing like a Neymar or Hazard without every having the skill. This boy just bought his own hype.

If he remained disciplined and focused on the team he would be a menace.
