Who was the last Premier League player who won the Golden ball? Michael Owen?
If Liverpool had won the Champions League with Hat trick from Salah im confident he would have gotten it.
Next one is going to be heavily influenced by the world cup. Unless Messi wins the Champions League with PSG I think somebody who excells in Qatar will get it.
Cristiano.

It's so rare now for a defensive player to win the award, I actually think they should do it like the NBA with a Defensive Player of the Year award for football. It also alleviates the headache of having to determine the impact of for example a goalkeeper vs a striker. The Ballon d'OR is most likely going to a scoring machine anyway so a separate award that showcases the less glamorous side of the game would be really cool imo.

Because they are not as good as forwards, probably. If they were better, they would be forwards.

Pretty much irrelevant given that the difference in impact is minimal. I remember when Buffon signed for Juventus and everyone laughed at the price tag, now every top team knows you have to fork out for a keeper as they are absolutely essentially to winning / competing for top trophies.

As an even more recent example, without Courtois in the CL Final, Liverpool win the game 3-1 and Salah is seen as a hero.

De Bruyne is the best player in the league, could easily win if City win CL. Håland is capable of producing the numbers needed.

Salah is up there, but probably would’ve already won it if he were to. Kane and others need to produce something special in UCL AND on international stage to win it.

Haaland, maybe Salah (unless he's still trapped in Malacia's pocket).

Any player who plays a couple of worldies this season and thier club team wins the CL and has at least a semi final at the WC with their national team.

KDB for shitty and Belgium? Kane for Spurs and England? Havertz for Chelsea and Germany?

You can bet the Ballon d'or winner will have a big World Cup.

Could be Kane.

If Belgium do well in the WC and City go far in the CL, then KDB has a shot.

Salah and Haaland wont be at the World Cup.

I wouldn’t mind KDB getting some recognition, he’s been the best player in the league for a few years now and if he and Belgium have a great World Cup I’d be quite happy for him even if he plays for City. Joy of a player and a grace he’s spent his best years here

Son and Kane have no chance
England could fluke a WC win, that’s the only way Kane gets in the conversation.

It’s a very pro European league/international trophy - PL players are always up against it to win it.

There would be a perfect alignment of planets for that to happen but the main thing is that they're just not that good to ever potentially win a Ballon d'Or
In a Messi/Ronaldo-less world it's a fair bit easier

We've just gone through an era where 50 goal seasons weren't good enough for Lewa

Michael Own won one, and Cannavaro too. I agree the stars need to align though.

You mean this season? Kante, De Bruyne, Kane, Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus, Casemiro

If Liverpool win the CL, KDB and Haaland wouldn't have a chance.
Pool have won it once in the last +15 years (or twice in +30 years), and have no chance of winning the league, so it's not likely.

If 50 goals isn't good enough for Lewandowski, what would make it easier for players who score a lot less than him ??

De Bruyne, Haaland, Salah, Kane (would need to score heavily as England win the WC, but it's possible), Van Dijk (unlikely as requires a return to his pre-injury level, an impeccable defensive record and a CL or NT win). Longer-term Foden has a chance of getting into that conversation if he assumes a central role at City and succeeds internationally. The Brazilians have a chance this year as favourites for the World Cup, but it looks like Benzema has it in the bag.

I don't think Kante has a chance - he has already won everything and delivered some massive performances at the business end of tournaments and only reached 5th. And more importantly how many defensively minded midfielders have won it over the last 65 years?

All that's mentioned I would add Harry Kane to the list - on a dominant side per se Real or Bayern he would have won it already. Imo he outgrew Spurs 3 years ago and should have moved.
Bayern had a better striker than Kane - who still didn’t win, so that statement is a bit of a hyperbole.

If we're talking about whole careers there's probably a fair few youngsters who could win it. Requires minimum playing a leading role in a CL victory and/or an international competition (WC has most weight, then Euros). A lot of names mentioned have their odds heavily decreased because of the national team they represent.

I think it's more likely that a current PL player under 19 will win it, than the likes of De Bruyne, Salah etc.

Probably the following in the next 5 years have a chance:
Salah
KDB
Haaland
Kane
Bruno
Ronaldo

Can’t see anyone else really. Chelsea/ Arsenal have no player who can carry them to a League/ CL. Ronaldo has history of winning and him doing something special would push him more than others for the story. Even if not deserved. I still have hope for Bruno getting back to his form when he first joined us and carrying us to a league even if a pipe dream.

Probably KDB, Salah and Haaland are the 3 that have a realistic chance.

Kane should be in the mix but he doesn't seem to be fashionable enough.

Good one!

I was about to say Bale myself. The way that young lad's been terrorizing right backs in the Championship for Soton, I think he's gonna be sold to one of the bigger clubs ones soon and do well there. Hell of a stride and left foot on him, for a left back.

,....but I'll go with these PL-players in stead.
Salah could win it if Liverpool wins the big double (Looks tough though)
KDB or Haaland could win it if City wins the big double. (More likely)

Can't see England winning the WC so it'll be tough for everyone else.

Add in that he could very plausibly make twice what he does now at Spurs if he moved to a bigger club, and it becomes even stranger. Or even more admirable, if you prefer to see it that way.

None. They will never get the votes as long as the daft numbers posted in leagues like France and Germany are seen as equal. Haaland would be the only possible contender but he needs to win a big trophy from somewhere, it won't be his country and City are allergic to Europe.

My post was more forward looking tbh. Mbappe will be going far into the UCL every season and putting up insane numbers in all comps.
He's done that previously and never got near the award so I'm not sure what will change. Ironically, Messi joining the team has brought many more eyes to the French league and so people may be more aware now of Mbappe's domestic exploits. However, I still think PSG actually need to win the CL (not just go far) for Mbappe to have a real shot and he still then has the problem of Messi or Neymar maybe being ahead of him in the voting.

Think the whole thing is rigged in favor of continental Europe because of how the voting works.
