It's hard to judge the quality of any Dutch player under a dinosaur like Van Gaal. I see his football hasn't got any less painful to watch since he left United.

Italy wining last Euro is nothing different than Greece winning 2004 Euro. It wasn't on solid foundation of talent for long term success that a generation can dominate for 7-8 years. It was no surprise Italy failed to qualify the wc. Same with Germany being poor for very long time. Every now and then we hear hype of this or that is next great talent. Turns out nothing great in long term.
Italy won the Euros (dominating most of their opponent -not Spain though- ) and made the top 4 of NL twice. They established a new world record of invincibility (37 games/ Argentina came close to equal that). In between, they missed the WC to which they would have qualified if Jorginho (one of the world's best PK takers) had scored either of the 2 PK he missed in both games against Switzerland.

But yes, it all sounds like Greece 2004.

I'm honestly not convinced we'll beat Qatar
They've got far more energy than your guys! Plus they have nothing to lose so can play freely and try to end on a high.

Is there a more likeable Gooner than Ian Wright? Don't you dare say Piers Morgan.

Yeh they had a purple patch just like Greece albeit may be little better but a purple patch nonetheless. They were not in last wc, they are not here, and for a reason. Had they have talent pool of 90s or mid 2000s then we will be seeing them competing regularly at highest level.

What a total shit game that was. Just irritating football, nothing going right - for the Netherlands at least. I suppose Ecuador feel they should have gotten more out of this now.

Not sure how Van Gaal is going to fix this. I don't think it was that Ecuador was nullifying the Dutch game, there just doesn't seem to be much game to speak off. Even ball playing skills seem poor from lots of players.

Wonder if England would rather play Senegal or Ecuador?
Probably Senegal. Ecuador is a real handful that could cause them to lose their composure a bit even I think...

Why has Laura Woods been relegated to pitchside presenter? She should be front and centre. Heck, just have her talking to herself for the whole pre-match coverage.

Pierre van Hooijdonk would be their number one striker these days
Very likely… he would play just for his free kick too. Van Hooijdonk is pundit for the national tv right now but i would rather have his co pundit as our striker…. Marco van Basten

van der Vaart as the on field pundit… he would be a star in this team too.

Alabama but always Wales in my heart
So if the USA beat England and then get smashed by Iran, Wales can qualify by beating England by a decent margin. It is possible on paper but I can't even begin to pretend it will happen even as a wind up.

I don't generally root for England but being surrounded by Americans and their nauseatingly ill-informed opinions about "soccer" has made me want the USA to lose every game they play for the rest of eternity by 5 goals or more.

Forgive my ignorance but how come Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru have lots of black players (I'm assuming also in their general population) but Argentina and Uruguay don't?
They aren't natives, their ancestors were brought from Africa to work in plantations.

You can start with the Portuguese being notoriously big into slave trading while the Spanish "just" exploited the local peoples to extract gold and silver in Bolivia and Peru (you are a bit off with Peru being in the same bucket). That explains Brazil.

Ecuador and Colombia were part of a different (tropical) region including Venezuela so the embracing of slavery follows similar patterns to Brazil and the Caribbean. It's a trained human resource issue (there's a brilliant Dan Carlin podcast on this).

Argentina and Uruguay weren't that much into labour intensive agriculture. Their climate was more amenable to replicating Europe in South America so there was more focus on urban development, trade and military outpost, etc.

What few afrodescendents there are were "help" so a far less relevant % of the population today. Uruguay actually abolished slavery in 1815.

What's the deal with Gio Reyna being shafted and made to sit on the bench two games in a row? He's better than most these scrubs.
Berhalter say's he's injured. Reyna says he's not.

So he's either injured or being punished for daring to contradict dear leader.

In a word, racism.

It could be, but (if this data is accurate) the demographic breakdown really is different.

There is a huge difference between being the Italy of 2000s and Greece 04... The current Italian squad is not good but it is far better than Greece 2004. It's ridiculous to even insinuate otherwise. They won the Euro thanks to Donnaruma, Chiellini, Bonucci, Verratti, Barella, Chiesa. These are great players, some of them world class players. They won their group with 9 points. Their midfield toyed with Belgium and England comfortably.

How do you compare this to Greece 2004 who made it out of the group on 4 points after losing to a quite poor Russia. Only qualified thanks to Spain being useless bottlers back then...

Pretty much. My wife is Peruvian. She pretty much told me that white South Americans act superior to darker skinned people. They have a higher social status, usually are more wealthy and live better off. Basically it’s like South Africa in many ways.

Thanks Mark Pougatch for explaining the US advert before they showed it, in case we wouldn't understand it by watching it ourselves.

Yes because they engaged in ethnic cleansing, one of their former presidents declared that "blacks dont exist here, that is a problem for Brazil" or something similar IIRC.

Suprised haji wright is starting
I agree. I think this suggests that the US will not be trying to possess the ball much as Fereira would be the better fit for that since his game is to drop deep and receive the ball.
