Jesus. I made the same decision with that GdT short by yer man who made Mandy we were discussing recently. Twas a rollercoaster ride but worth it in the end. Despite the face melting. Might try again for this film. Sure what could go wrong?

I think it's really well made, and the way everything hangs together is very, very neat. I just don't think it has that 'something extra' that makes it truly great; in particular, I think it's themes are too obvious, and the story is explained too much towards the end.

Still a good film though, just not great.

Good luck, you’ll have to tell me how it goes if you go through with it. It’s basically the face melting scene for 90 minutes, tbh it did me remind me of the animation parts of Pink Floyd The Wall. Even though the director is American, it has a kind of grim British dystopia.

The first time I got about 20 minutes in and decided it was best to leave the film to later and instead go and pet the dog.

Oh if anyone is interested in other horror animations - The Wolf House(Film about girl escaping a Nazi community in Pinochet chile, is a great watch.

It becomes a little bit "style over substance" as it goes on, but it's definitely wonderfully creative. It's horribly depressing though. Rarely watched something so bleak, had to put on Grave of the Fireflies followed by Come and See to cheer myself up.

I finally watched Sea of Trees last night, a film that's been on my list for quite some time. It's a wonderfully understated drama, with a foray into the survival genre, that deals with death, mourning, hope and love, not necessarily the most joyful film ever but a great watch and some excellent performances by the three main actors - Matthew McConaughey, Naomi Watts and Ken Watanabe. Beautiful film that stirred up some things inside. Gus van Sant is great with this kind of stuff.

Decision to Leave (2022)
Park Chan-wook's latest film. The director of Oldboy and The Handmaiden has created another absolutely brilliant and beautiful film with impeccable acting from the cast and truly gorgeous cinematography. This is the type of movie that really shows why you don't need any CGI to captivate an audience. I'm a huge fan of all his movies, probably one of my absolute favorite directors of all time and this does not disappoint. It's got more of a Hitchcock vibe than Oldboy, The Handmaiden, or Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (all movies I love) and he pulls it off like only a true master of the artform can. Old Alfred would be ecstatic to see a film like this. Echoes of Vertigo while still being a completely original and innovative film. It does have nonlinear out of chronological order sequences so you have to pay attention, it's not the kind of Hollywood flick you can put on and multitask or browse your social media during but there is so much here in plot, theme, and character candy here that the film doesn't even need its stunning cinematography but adding that to the mix just makes this one of my favorites. On par with the best films I've ever seen.

What's the consensus on Us? I liked Get Out a lot but Us was a mess.

Get Out had a couple of great images/sequences but other than that I thought it was a mess. Started out like a Twilight Zone parody, Black Mirror lite, then became a farce at the end. The ending particularly egregious because it was a reshoot tacking a completely different ending onto a ridiculous story. It is one of the most overrated movies in recent memory and I’m not watching anything else by him if Get Out is the high water mark.

The Bad Batch.

Some post apocalypse cannibals in the desert thing. Interesting cast. Pointless film with cruelty and depravity aplenty. Shit directing, shit writing. Makes you wonder why anyone thought this script should be turned into a movie, why actors signed on. Pointless, stupid, faux-edgy, trash. Maybe the second half redeems the first but I shut it off after 40 minutes, desperately waiting for it to turn the corner.

Boss Level

Popcorn, time loop fun that's actually pretty great. I bought this months ago on Blu Ray, never watched (I think) and then picked up the 4K disc today on the back of my first viewing. It's a bit cheesy in parts, but the cast are great. Good redemption-y story and for a time travel/loop film there's few maybe no 'but what about/how did that happen' moments.

Solid 8 for me, if you're after that kind of movie.

I thought it was pretty straightforward with a fresh look. I liked the way it rather naturally mixed horror with comedy, something that is not easy to find in contemporary horror movies imho. I mean it's nothing I'd rave about but also nothing I wouldn't watch a second time though. But to each their own.

The lawyer was a bit OTT (well, fitted the gang in that way) so gave it a wee bit too early away. Cage is amazing, his interactions with the girl's mother were quite gripping.

Yeah it's odd. While it's very impressive and impossible to tell, for me at least in a lot of the scenes I prefer the original. The emptiness and disconnection in some parts of america, is one of more interesting/dystopian things about the country(Also I wonder if it's just labour saving costs, cheaper to use CGI than to get set designers and workers to build real sets)

It's a pretty good film though.

I bet Cage's wife originally left him, rendering him completely lost and desolate at last.

One major change was that in the original script you never see Machine’s face (and I don’t think he speaks either).

I think the original script is on Walker’s website. Used to be anyway.

Thanks a lot for suggesting this one. Just finished watching it. Really good. Loved the Arabic sound tracks used at the beginning of the movie and use of music in general.
