I liked this. What’s great is all the things that makes sense after. Eg When the police stop the GF and the officer asks for his ID, her anger isn’t about him being profiled it’s to save herself. Also the officer might have asked for his ID because he had suspicion that blacks people were going missing or When the guy breaks his saying “get out” as advice not in anger at him there’s a whole load of others
It’s a beautiful film. I think anyone expecting laugh out loud funny like In Bruges might be disappointed. It’s a far more somber affair.
Get Out is full of these nice little details. Some more subtle than others. My favorite bit of detail is when
the protagonist quite literally picks cotton(to plug his ears) to save his life. The way they took such an awful historic element and made it empowering like that is just brilliant writing.
Was just looking for what people thought of this after watching and enjoying and then saw this from the same person who gave the new Avatar a 9/10. Mad how some people’s taste can be an absolute 180 on what you’d expect.

I have seen his taste before but sometimes I’m still shocked by just how vastly off the scale it is.

Hellraiser (original) - I watched this as a kid and thought it was so good. Watched it again for the first time in donkeys years and I’m amazed at how bad it is and how badly it’s aged. 2/10
The Departed
What an absolute blockbuster of a film. Not seen for a while but watched again tonight and what a film it truly is with an amazing cast all at full throttle. Nicholson, Di Caprio, Damon, Wahlberg, Sheen, Baldwin and Winstone who make such an absorbing cast.
For me it is up there with the best of Scorsese's films with a deserved Oscar.
Twists and turns with double crossings along the way it is truly a great gangster film.

Yeah it's funny. But avatar was pretty good. Banshees tried too hard to recreate the in bruges humour and the story was very meh. I would like to hear why its good for some. I mean some people picked Old boy over Saving Private Ryan or Parasite over Fellowship of the ring. No ones perfect

The Guardian and Telegraph both just wrote pieces on cannibal films and it reminded me I never got round to watching Cannibal Holocaust. Then I discovered www.effedmovies.com, a big free collection of video nasties and mondo films, and I've been trawling through that.
I forgot to add Raw to the list!
I was maybe slightly harsh. I'd seen the UK cut version years and was expecting a bit more from the carving scene.
Funnily enough I watch House on the Edge of the Park after LHOTF. Hess is decent in both films.
It's entertaining, but the plot is minimal and agree the sequence at the house maybe overlong. The ambiguous sex scene between the sidekick and that woman hostage would likely not be made today.
I actually thought the twist sucked tbh
given they all got beaten half to death and/or raped and were lucky Hess and his buddy screwed up, giving them the chance to grab the gun. It was a terrible plan.

Nah, you're totally right. It was a very silly movie but with that in mind the twist worked for me (as in: didn't expect it and although it was silly it was also kinda sleazy). That scene in the garden house stuck out and was downright offensive even for an exploitation flic like this. The cast was quite decent but without Hess it wouldn't have worked I guess. Interesting dude, have to check out what he did elsewhere. I read he wrote two songs for Elvis..
CH and Ferox well worth a watch. They all are tbh.
That effedupmovies website doesn't have great navigation, so it's easier to look for individual films in the search bar. If you look at the sections, they hardly have any films in, but there is an A-Z list somewhere and there are hundreds.
I didn't expect the twist, but was that jaded by the film's relentless that it didn't work for me, but particularly for the reasons I mentioned.
Probably didn't help that I'd watched about 8 exploitation films in a row
I need to mix it up a bit, but am reading Jane Eyre for something more highbrow.Had no idea re Hess. He is a charismatic lead thug in those films, but interesting he had a softer more musical side. I'll have a read.

I'm a huge fan of Fulic's Zombi Flesh Eater so if you haven't seen that I would recommend it. Not sure if a video nasty but I found Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer quiet hefty and a good movie although controversial of course. Also not a nasty but Tenderness of the Wolves is a very good movie (and features cannibalism so right up your alley!

I've seen a few Argento, will check out Zombie Flesh Eaters, which is another glaring omissions on my list, and more Fulci, plus Bava.
I had Henry on dvd years back but lent it to someone who never gave it back- I remember a decent soldering iron scene.

Dunno why all the bad reviews. It is exactly what it is meant to be, a fun, big action extravaganza with a decent cast (Chris Evans was having a blast). Also, I know it has Ana De Armas but I prefer Jessica Henwick All in all, it was what I wanted from it. I enjoyed it 6.5/10

Its not good, bits taken from Tremors and Alien, the acting is just bad, you could tell how it would end right from the start,

Whiplash - just saw this absolute incredible movie. J.K. Simmons has such a presence on screen. The acting, storyline, music and drama are all superb. If you haven’t seen this, I can’t recommend it enough. I thought Birdman was the best movie of 2014, but this is up there with it. 9/10
Stand by Me - coming-of-age tale about four kids who hear of a dead body and go see it. It's based off of a Stephen King novella (one that I haven't read) and he himself has said this was the first 'successful' adaptation of one of his works. It's a good movie - the young cast all handle the mature script well and there's some nice performances from a younger John Cusack, and Kiefer Sutherland. The main heart of the movie is the four young boys, all coming from dysfunctional families but finding solace in their friendship. I really enjoyed it overall. 7.5/10

I watched Get Out for the first time a few days ago and thought it was pretty average if I’m honest. Perhaps it’s because it has received so much attention, along with the Director, but yeah I didn’t see anything special.
Moonfall - I can see what they were going for. The directors obviously saw 'The Core' as a contemporary masterpiece of the disaster movie genre and thought, alright lets make a movie exactly like that except dumb it down a bit more, and make the plot make even less sense.. And they absolutely nailed it to be fair. And Halle Berry is still hot for 56 which was a nice surprise.
Just because I'm very sad I've kept every film I've seen over the last few years in a giant ranking list, and from best to worst here is how I saw 2022, appreciating that Jackass shouldn't really be that high but I'm very immature.

I liked the use of bright colours in the second half but overall I would agree with you. After the hospital segment and the death of the “main character”, the film does lose something
Not one to watch with the family imo.
Horrible Bosses 2 - the first one was good overall, this tried to keep the same formula going. It's ok. I like Jason Bateman and it was like watching Michael Bluth with Gob and Buster with the other two leads. Overall, a good way to kill an hour and a bit with some easy viewing. I'll give it a 6/10.
The effects have obviously aged and it was low budget to begin with. It's entertaining enough though, doesn't take itself too seriously and Pinhead is a cool character.
Definitely get your point. I think I first watched it just before the hype, or at least before I became aware of the hype, if I watched it after reading all the reviews and hype then I’d probably think it was good but people were going OTT.
I think it's really well made, and the way everything hangs together is very, very neat. I just don't think it has that 'something extra' that makes it truly great; in particular, I think it's themes are too obvious, and the story is explained too much towards the end.
Still a good film though, just not great.

Title says it all. Great rollercoaster retro-grindhouse movie starring Rutger Hauer with a shotty. Completely over the top, extremely violent with lots of gore, black humor and of course Rudger Hauer. I like it!

How often do you disagree with the ratings?
It becomes a little bit "style over substance" as it goes on, but it's definitely wonderfully creative. It's horribly depressing though. Rarely watched something so bleak, had to put on Grave of the Fireflies followed by Come and See to cheer myself up.Mad God

Took me two attempt to watch as the first time I thought it would be a good idea to watch it after having an edible(Which was clearly a very bad idea)
Yeah would agree with you, I wonder if thats the downside of taking a over a decade to make. It’s far more about vibes than as you said substantive.
At least Come And See has Partizans scene(Which tbf is one of the most uplifting moments in cinema). I would say Mad God is so bleak that I became a bit detached from it at times.
Still very impressive.
Jesus. I made the same decision with that GdT short by yer man who made Mandy we were discussing recently. Twas a rollercoaster ride but worth it in the end. Despite the face melting. Might try again for this film. Sure what could go wrong?
