Get Out - 2017

Had never hear of it to be honest but had seen it pop up on my recommendations a few times on Netflix. Googling the film after watching it and found out it was quite a big hit.

A very good horror/thriller which covers racism/superior race with quite a few twists throughout.

Pretty much, the lead guy is apprehensive about meeting his white girlfriends parents for the weekend due to his interracial relationship. Family is awfully creepy but there is a lot more than meets the eye.

A pretty sinister film and a movie that gets you thinking throughout.

9/10 for me.

Yes, very good. Not a film at all of course, but really great at showing through remastered and coloured original footage what life was really like for people that got drafted to fight in the trenches of WW1 and then spent all that time there. Nothing about the geopolitical side of the war - just a focus on the people fighting it in those trenches. Really impressive.
Yes you are right not a film, still excellent and I think well worth watching.

Jesus T1 is just perfect.
One of my all time favourites.

That scene after they escaped the nightclub and "no eyebrows" Arnie stares at them during the car chase shooting his shotty....

Dont read anything about it, just watch it blind.
Barbarian

Another well made horror movie. I went in without knowing anything about the plot. The first two acts were very enjoyable and I just couldn't figure out in which direction the movie was heading.
I think the movie is on par with 'Smile' entertainment wise, but the production value and atmosphere in 'Barbarian' are a bit better. For sure one of the better horror movies in recent years.

Question: did the movie explain why the airbnb got double-booked by both Tess and Keith? Was it a trap by the original house owner to lure them or just coincidence?

8,5 out of 10

The owner had no idea, I said in my review there was a lack of back story and for me the ending was not good, you liked it better than I did.
I enjoyed Smile more.

I agree with you. The back story was too simplistic and I found the third act a bit underwelming. The movie left us with alot of questions/ plotholes. Still a very good horror movie.

Watched it about a month ago, love it. 8/10

This is another J. Peele horror movie, I'll watch it later.

*edit: didn't know some had discussed J. Peele 'horror' movies in the previous page, now I am a bit hesitant to watch Nope :D

For what it's worth, me and a few others thought Nope was actually better than Get Out.

I'm just about to start watching it right now.
So? What was your opinion in the end?

There was a good post by someone on here, whose thoughts/impressions I agreed with, who highlighted that the backstory wasn't so important, and that it was fundamentally a film about trust.
What's the consensus on Us? I liked Get Out a lot but Us was a mess.
I don't think there's much of a consensus, opinions were quite split. I felt it was more ambitious than Get Out, but lacked a bit of a direction in the themes/social commentary, but it's still a film I quite like despite it not being quite as tight as Get out or Nope.

There was no consensus really. It was a mess and poor seems the most common response. I thought it was a fine way to kill a couple of hours but i wouldn't recommend it. Think even those who liked it thought Get Out and Nope were a clear step above it (though Nope has its fair share of critics too).

Mulholland Drive is on channel4.com at the moment. Been meaning to rewatch it again for a while. They tend to have a few good movies up there pretty often if your looking for ideas.

Bit of grindhouse in the absence of football.

Cannibal Holocaust
Gore-riddled satire of documentary-makers falsifying footage for shock value (with the film unironically doing the exact same thing). Disturbing and violent, it's questionable whether it actually mocks the ambiguity of who's really the savage- the perverse filmmaker or the natives they're filming.
6/10

Cannibal Ferox

Another pretty brutal, but entertaining 1980s **** classic. The animal cruelty is a tough watch in both of these films, as is the lingering stock footage of animals killing each other. But the film is a well-paced, engaging ride through the cannibal-infested Amazon forest. Quite a nice soundtrack, blending electronica and choral harmonies, but the supposed intellectual basis of the film's premise -whether colonialism drove greater savagery from indigenous populations- is flimsy at best.
6.5/10

Harsh - the first one was great fun. 2nd and 3rd were so-so, but I enjoyed the dynamic between Tucker and Chan.

The Lair

When Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Kate Sinclair is shot down over Afghanistan, she finds refuge in an abandoned underground bunker where deadly man-made biological weapons - half human, half alien - are awakened.
It was not a good film, shame really because the story I thought was decent, with better actors and a bigger budget, this could have been a very good film.
The monsters were scary and affective, I have seen much worse than this.

Triangle of Sadness was nice. Although a bit too long and not subtle enough. If it was 20-30 minutes shorter, would have been a massively better film.

The Lobster
In a dystopian future, single people are sent to a hotel where they must find a compatible partner within a set time or be turned into an animal of their choosing to live out the rest of their days. Has that clinical style in cinematography and dialogue that most Yargos Lanthimos films have and it really works to create a film that is funny, fresh and also heart-warming but I felt a steep decline after the first half but it does pick up a little in the final act. Happy to watch films that try something new so this was a pleasant surprise 7/10
Lanthimos is so fecking talented and his movies are a breath of fresh air.

Recently say Favourite and it’s definitely up there as one of the best movies I’ve seen this year.

Really? The Lobster was a really terrible film. Pretentious and nonsensical.

Triangle of Sadness… enjoyed the first two acts a lot but the whole thing fell apart in the third act for me. Wished they had kept it going as it was instead. Worth a watch, though.

was shocked to learn after that the main actress died recently, what a shame. She was great.
Yes felt the same. The 2nd act was so wonderfully done while the island and inversion of hierarchies has been done to death.

Still an interesting movie nevertheless.

Shame about the actress, so young and talented.

I can see where you’re coming from. It did get a bit too much towards the end but I really enjoyed the original and provocative premise.

Check out Favourite if you want to give him another chance. Great cinema. Dogtooth was also erm lets just say “interesting” as well

I don't know about consensus but personally, I kind of enjoyed Us... Then I thought about the premise and it quickly fell apart.

NOPE was just a pile of shit.

Didn't Jackie Chan disown his lesbian daughter because he's homophobic and now she lives on the streets?

Troll
Netflix blockbuster monster movie set in Norway about a troll that awakens and causes havoc as it heads towards Oslo. A fun monster flick, nice break from dinosaurs and King Kong. The first act was brilliant but then becomes a bit paint by numbers but it remains fun throughout. Troll Hunter is a much better film based on the mythical creature but this was a good movie too just switch off the old brain and enjoy 7/10

Pretty cool movie and agreed that Trollhunter is even better
