I don't think he's going anywhere this month. Ten Hag wants to improve squad depth right now, not worsen it. Maguire will be important for us until end of the season, different kind of defender that could be important in some type of situations and we know Varane gets injured often.

One thing Maguire will probably be frustrated about (if he doesn't start in most games) is he's just had solid World Cup and being on the bench after that isn't greatest outcome. But with amount of games we should have he'll start in some I'm sure, then perhaps leave for a club like Villa.

I would agree with him leaving in the summer, except for the apparent fact that Ten Hag has no budget for transfers and Villa aren't really safe yet and have a ton of money. If they offer an inflated enough fee for him, I could see Ten Hag taking the money and looking to overpay the target he wants at RCB, or another loan for 5 months of a CB and hoping Shaw, Lindelof and that player can be the backups for 5 months.

What if Villa offer 35M for Maguire? Ten Hag might like a 20M rated younger CB and be willing to spend 30M to lock that in. Or some weird loan of a Michael Keane, Vestergaard or more likely a CB from the continent since there are lots of teams really struggling financially. Or the in-between option of a loan fee with an option to buy on a decent CB, like Liverpool tried with Kazak (didn't come off, but he's the top rated player on Hoffenheim again) but hopefully to better results.

I do find it a bit interested that as soon as Maguire is rumored out — the club shuts down the rumor instantly. When everyone had Ronaldo requesting a transfer in the summer — nothing was said despite Ronaldo never wanting out. Then it was just said ‘the club doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation’. :)
ummm?

Haha, I don’t know, and I really don’t care, but he did claim in the interview that he told ETH that he needed to think about it for what 2 weeks, then that he decided to stay. Could have lied, but I don’t know.

Decided to stay because Chelsea backed out. That was who he was banking on joining.

Boehly had set it in motion but Tuchel refused, that's why they ended up falling out and he got sacked not long after.

Shaw is not our back up centre back. He is our back up left centre back. ETH likes a left footer and a right footer. So Maguire will likely come in if something happens to Varane. Either him or Lindelof. Question is, would you rather have Maguire on the pitch or Lindelof. I'd rather have Maguire. But I also think Maguire will bring in more money in the transfer market while Lindelof will probably be more humble in a back up role than Harry will be. So Maguire to Villa could be good for the club. I just hope Varane stays healthy...

We will probably not sell either in the summer, but honestly, I would be fine with selling both. Lindelof should also bring in a fairly solid transfer fee, and selling him really help our earnings in relation to the FFP rules since he is really amortized.

Maguire is on almost twice the salary as Lindelof is. Could we get like 20m for each of Maguire and Lindelof? Then sign someone young like a Anel Ahmedhodžić from Sheffield U, 25m? Much cheaper wages. Think he would be an awesome signing under ETH. Good in the air. Really fast. A bit similar to Varane.

Can't see him going to Villa or any other PL side outside the big six, he's ego wouldn't take it. Can't see him going to any top six side either, because he's shit.

Maybe Italy. All our shite players done well there.
I think Villa makes perfect sense. Tier 2 club, and have the money. Possibly he has the self-awareness to understand that if he isn't starting for United, he's not that likely to start for any other big 7 club either, at least not until he's redeemed his status as a top player. After a season and a half of subpar performances, that's no longer being regarded as a blip or a patch of bad form, it's the new normal for him. And he must be getting desperate to get out of a situation where he's captain but basically 4th or 5th choice in his position, even after doing well in the WC. He must know he's become the embodiment and face of a bad period United fans want to forget as soon as possible.

It's hard to say we need him for the rest of the season now that Ten Hag seemingly favours Shaw as our backup CB. I also think there's little difference between Lindelöf and Maguire in Ten Hag's eyes.

Still, would surprise me if we sold now so hopefully means we got a generous offer.
While I agree that Shaw's emergence gives us the necessary squad depth at CB seen in isolation, there's also a question of overall squad depth at defence. If Malacia is injured, you can't use Shaw at CB etc. 7 defenders are really too few for the sort of schedule we're facing. Unless there's confidence someone like Williams can feature regularly, we'd really need to replace him if he goes.

That being said, I think it's really obviously in both the club's interest and his own for him to move on, and the sooner the better. So if a good offer is there in this window, it would be hard to turn it down even if there's short term pain. It might in any case provide the cash to bring a good replacement in during the same window. Chelsea just brought in Badiashile for 35m, and there should be viable 2nd choice quality available in that price range, you'd think?

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

His agent spent the entire window doing the rounds of basically every club in the Champions League, trying his best to get somebody (anybody!) to bite. Chelsea was the only one who seemed to think about it, but decided to back the manager when Tuchel said he didn't want him. Of course Ronaldo isn't going to come out and say that there were absolutely no options for him. His ego couldn't handle that.

Christ. Loved him as a player but Rio really isn’t the smartest is he.
Sooner we move on from the influence of the past the better it will be he was doing it with Ronaldo as well, not to mention how they tip toed around Ole, and Nevs saying Maguire was the future of the club sometime last year i mean they seemingly care more about their bias than they do United at this point.

'That's like me going back after the World Cup, playing well, everyone saying he's done really well, and Patrice Evra is playing centre-back.
'I'd want to strangle Patrice! I would've smashed Patrice in training to make sure he's not available, and I'd be going to the manager and saying, 'are you taking the piss out of me, boss?'. I'd have walked straight into the manager's office and said, 'you're disrespecting me'.
Literally not even a comparison Rio is one of the greatest CB's of all time and Maguire is a prime example of what ETH meant about not being strong enough for the shirt hes mentally fragile, a more suitable situation would be Shaw playing ahead of Varane.

Eh? I think it's pretty obvious Maguire needs to leave for the sake of his own career.

Exactly. From a Utd perspective he's needed for cover but there's absolutely no chance he'll become a first team selection.

Loved to have seen Rio go into SAF office and claim that the manager was disrespecting him.

Yeah but Rio’s “Are you taking the piss out of me ?” schtick is childish and frankly stupid. Luke Shaw is a better CB option for us under ten Hag. That is the reality and I think it’s plain to see for most of us fans. Ferdinand talks like he’s never watched, never mind played, a match of football half the time.

Rio is talking from a players perspective though. To fans it makes sense but I can see why if Rio or any other CB in Maguire's position might feel hard done. Maguire will want to play, feels he has shown he is capable of playing at a high level at CB and a LB who has never played as CB in a back 4 before December is getting minutes ahead of him.

In ceartain games, maybe but he's an accident waiting to happen against any half decent attack imo. Luke Shaw is a full back.

What has Harry Maguire shown as a Manchester United player to feel hard done by at this point ?

Are you talking about Maguire or Shaw ? Sounds more like the former than the latter.

Maybe it hasn't worked out which is a shame, but these things happen at big clubs.. you pay inflated prices for players and sometimes it's just too much, or it just doesn't work. In many ways I blame OGS.. paying so much, making him a captain when it was quickly and abundantly clear that he couldn't fufill that role. Varane and Martinez are better. Shaw has improved (drastically under ETH... it's like having a new player) as has Dalot. Maguire doesn't come in and really seek to dominate that position, and therefore if we can get some cash at the end of the season, it may be best for all that he moves on. BUT..we need a replacement, one out, one in. Has to be. Big clubs need four decent Centre Backs.
