If there's a silver lining here, look how happy it's made all the crew who were horrified that Ten Hag, the naive fool, put out a decent side in a mickey mouse, tin pot cup like this.

We don't have any suitable cover for for him, so the team will certainly regress if he's out for any significant length of time. Hopefully the boot was precautionary.

United's first XI is quite good, but the squad is paper thin, with very little quality in reserve - if we are to remain in the top 4 this season, we'll need Casemiro, Eriksen, Fernandes and Rashford to stay fit and play almost every Premier League game from now until May. I would not fancy our chances if any of them goes missing for a prolonged period.

Should be noted Bruno Guimaraes went off at HT against Fulham in tears and left the stadium in a big protective boot on crutches and he played 90 minutes 6 days later.

So let's not go completely over the top and start saying he's definitely going to be out for the rest of the season.
Yes, it looked painful rather than a really serious one, so fingers crossed it won't be a long layoff.

While you would despair at the hysterical nature of some of the posts on this it has to be said that Carroll is a thug who shouldn’t be allowed share a pitch with professional footballers.

Any injury right now is going to cost us fairly big. Especially given we've got Barcelona coming up and the final against Newcastle.

It's reductive to blame Ten Hag for this injury. Eriksen wasn't injured because he was overplayed, he was injured because the opposition had a thuggish cnut who genuinely looked like he was out to hurt our players tonight. There's basically nothing a manager can do to mitigate against that; if it wasn't Eriksen that got hurt it may well have been another player with the ridiculous way Carroll was going into challenges.

The games are piling up like a stack of dominos right now!!

Hopefully the players won't collapse like the stack eventually does...

Agreed. I don't think you can blame Ten Hag. As I said above, a major injury to any of Eriksen, Casemiro, Fernandes or Rashford would be a significant blow to United's season because we do not have adequate cover for any of them, but it is exactly for that reason that they need to keep playing every game. Ten Hag is right not to rotate them - we need to get lucky and hope that they can play more-or-less every Premier League game without burning out.

It is a sad fact but we have no one who can replace him. Not a single person in the squad who can replace his vision, passing and reading of the game so whoever replaces him will be a player with different qualities. Let us hope he's not out for too long.

Would be one thing to have a player with similar traits replace him but the fact that we don't means we have to adjust the way we play...

I mean to be fair, I think of those you listed Eriksen being injured is possibly the one who will hurt us the least because I think Fred is a competent enough back-up option that we'll probably be alright against most opponents. Our lack of depth in midfield is the key issue here, though, like you say. We essentially have three midfielders (Casemiro, Eriksen and Fred) who are adequate enough to keep us competitive throughout the season, and McTominay who can't really be relied upon to consistently do what we need of him. It's pretty difficult for Ten Hag to manage that situation with the huge fixture congestion we're facing right now.

Was hoping Maguire would two-foot the scouse thug. Ridiculous refereeing.

Unfortunately, another case of EtH being ambitious in all games might cost us. At least Fred is a much better replacement than Casemiro. Or do we dare hope for a late signing?

Agreed. I didn't want Eriksen (or Casemiro for that matter) to start tonight but it would've been just as problematic if it was Fred who got crunched.

Carroll was playing like a lunatic. Ince had the gall to say the ref couldn't wait to get his cards out for Carroll after two tackles which could've been red cards in their own right!

If we'd have rested Eriksen Carroll would have just taken out Fred or Casemiro or any other Utd player.

He's a fecking scumbag and he went out in that second half to injure someone. It's unfair to blame ETH, there's not much you can do with a fecking giant thug on the opposite team and an absolutely useless ref.
C
They should be checking if any large bets were made this week on Carroll getting a red card. He seemed utterly determined 2nd half to get sent off.
Yes. The blame should go to Carroll who is a thug and to the referee who did not do his job of protecting players from thugs. Not to ETH.

It would need to be a loan and I cannot think of many midfielders who'd meet the dual requirements of being good enough and being available. It's very unlikely.

I think so too. Wouldn't be surprised if he also instructed Eriksen to stay indoors and lay low for the next couple of days. He's ruthlessly attacking all the cups this year, and we've seen what happened when Barcelona let their foot off the gas after going up 3-0.

Eriksen is a consistently good player, while Fred can be so bad at times you wonder who he's playing for. I can remember several times he was the opposition's man of the match.

So here's my rant. No red card for Mateta for elbow on Licha. No penalty for McTominay at palace game. No penalty for Bruno Arsenal game. Offside for Rashford goal as Var states " Defender didn't deliberately play the ball" which is nonsense. We have a challenge on Casemiro for penalty not given. Carroll's scissors tackle on Ericksen clear yellow and can be argued a red as carroll didnt get any touch on the ball and nothing from ref. From then Carroll was given the green light to be an total arse. The two goals from Casemiro put a target on his back. We are lucky that Casemiro isn't in crutches too. The decisions are not going for us in any situation since that city goal. We are lucky that Carroll hasn't put our midfield in the treatment room.

"I don't complain (about the fixture schedule) - we have to handle it, squads is big enough to handle the competitions.

I think players like to play and you can build and construct a good team when you play often and in my perspective when you play often the same you're getting the routines in."

To be fair before he said that, Ince said it was a bad tackle on Eriksen and could have drawn a card from the referee.

Yes, for an argument sake we can say that but this was a match that we were supposed to rest some of our first teamers and the injury happened today. So there is merit in saying Eriksen should have been rested.
Who says we were supposed to rest first teamers today? I bet it wasn't anyone actually involved in making that decision

That's why a part of the blame should goto ETH who made a call to start our entire first choice midfield.

Carroll's a complete bellend. Hopefully Eriksen will be ok.

Erik seems to be taking a lot of shit for some of his recent selections. The trouble is if he'd rotated there's no guarantee we'd be in this position fighting on this amount of fronts. Maybe we should give the fella the benefit of the doubt that he knows what he's doing?

People can not wait to jump on ETH for this. I just don't get it. He's doing a phenomenal job. He picked Eriksen, he got injured - it happens. Fred, who has done well for us in that role, will take his place until he's back. People spouting 'season over' nonsense. Ridiculous.

We won the game with the team he felt we needed to play to do so, this wasn't an injury cause because a player was too tired

Agree but the injury happened today. So was that really needed to start our first choice midfield against a 16th placed Championship team ?

I keep hearing that this wasn't an injury because of overplaying but part of the reason why teams rest players is not just because of the fear of overplaying but also to avoid unnecessary injuries like this.

I think Fred will be very one dimensional relative to Eriksen’s creativity - let’s hope we get someone in on deadline day.
