Why do we get battered so often?

We play on transition, barely any control in midfield. So, when the forward line feck around and can't make easy passes and the opposing team score from any shots, the scoreline won't look pretty.

Also, mentally we just gave up after being down early. We need a strong leader in the team

We've won a trophy this season already, a few bad results are always gonna happen, stop the moaning and look forward to the next game.
A 2-0 is a bad result. A 7-0 it's a total humiliation. Even for a small club to be crushed in such way is humiliating.

Excuse us some of us can't look forward just yet.

We got a cf who is a Burnley loan and a 86 mill winger who cant beat a player. We are playing with 9 men for a start. A disgrace today

It’s officially the joint worst result in our history.

Common denominator is David De Gea, can credit his lack of ability in organizing a defence.

I’m not saying its the only reason, but definitely something that surely must be part of it.

Give me the position we are in now even getting dicked 7nil at anfield than not competing for cups and putting in a title challenge. Annoying as it was, it was a freak result and these things happen.
We have got very lucky with our cup draws this season bar Barcelona. It was exactly the same when Mourinho won the League Cup and Europa League. There has been progress this season but I still don’t think we are as good as people think. Liverpool and Chelsea are having particularly bad seasons.

Hope, We Lose
Willingness to conceed most of the ball. With our new defensive minded players this season we've been far tougher to play against, but on an off day like today when they arent playing out of their skin and their teammates levels have dropped too - the fullbacks, varane etc then we can't soak up the pressure if a team is on it going forward. And Liverpool were pretty clinical until about 3 up, then they did miss a few chances to end up with more than 7...

Theres a difference between having less of the ball and containing the threats, and having less of the ball and not being able to deal with the threats, being several goals behind and not being able to change things and have a dominant spell ourselves because we dont seemingly have the players who can achieve that

This team tends to miss always something along the line. Patch one thing and two other departments starts leaking.

Because we have some mentally fragile players that give up or do the "feeling sorry for ourselves" act when faced with adversity and the ball not going our way.
Its literally been the blueprint to beat us in recent seasons.
"Rush them, get 1 goal, their heads will drop, quickly get the 2nd 3rd 4th before they mentally recover". I mean we literally saw it vs Brentford.

The last time we went out to get possession and show composure on the ball was when we didn't get battered (not to this extent at least) under LVG.

Ever since we abandoned that approach and became a side that can't be composed with the ball and would rather play on the counter, the pastings started happening. Until we can go out there and play out from the back successfully whilst controlling the midfield and showing composure when we have possession, we will always be susceptible to a pasting vs a quality side.

Having a goalkeeper that can play out from the back and prevent chances before they become shots is a must. Having midfield players comfortable on the ball under pressure is a must. We have neither currently.

It is a bit concerning. How often do you see top teams getting a good spanking? Rarely. Even midtable teams get thrashed less often than we do. Feck knows what the reason is

We didn't concede 7 because of them or for that matter any one individual. It was a collective shambles, starting from our best player Martinez to Shaw to Bruno to Varane to Casemiro.

There is clearly a mentality issue with a lot of our players , they have been involved in a lot of embarrassing results. The towel gets thrown in very easily when the pressure comes on and things are not going our way.

We have no players with any mental strength bar maybe 3 or 4. Simple really.

I agree. So many were getting carried away prematurely for me and even if we won 7 nil tonight I wouldve said the same.
...

But we have developed well under ETH and the two legs against the leaders of La Liga demonstrated it well as did many games this season.

What happened tonight has not changed my outlook whatsoever on this team.

That's the price you pay with a high line defence. When things go right then defence and midfield work in tandem to create a tide that keeps pushing rival teams in their own half. However when things go wrong then things go really wrong

Last time we scored 3 goals without response vs. Liverpool was 2014. (3-0)
The time before that was 2008. (3-0)
The time before that was 2004. (4-0)

We rarely ever batter Liverpool, whether they're good or shite.

Everyone talking about mental strength but I think it's the system.

What ETH has done is make our players closer together so they are less exposed and less placed into positions of stress (1 v 1, backtracking, out of position etc).

Trouble is, when the system kinda breaks or a player disrupts the system via a mistake, it cascades and like dominos the defence falls apart like wet tissue paper, holes appear and then the structure and shape which can resist pressure folds.

A lot of it will be psychological from the few times it’s happened before.

Some of these players seem mentally scarred from taking numerous hammerings in recent seasons, so when things start to go pear shaped they’ve seen it all before and just throw the towel in. It’s something I don’t think can be coached out of them.

In our EL run 3 of our opponents will have been 3 of La Ligas top 5.

I might be wrong but I don’t think there will be many more results like this, even this was a freak in terms of the performance up until about the hour mark then it was attitude of players. ETH will root that out. He will also be more capable of fully implementing his philosophy once he has the full array of tools for the job.

We don't. The question should be 'why are so many football fans online so fickle'. We could have played terribly tonight and scraped a 1-0 last minute handball winner and there would be threads demanding ETH have a statue and the east stand named after him.

We got walloped tonight and it was a freak result.

They are. The club was fecking reckless when they let Solskjaer continue as a dead man and get battered game after game.

Has happened a lot of the past few years and quite a few of the players are still here and have experienced that so in their minds there must be a sense of 'here it comes again'. I think we were thrashed by teams scoring 4 goals against us 6 times last season if i remember right.

Emotions are still raw but I feel that although the team has been outstanding for most of this season we still have players that can just collapse if things go wrong. I've been critical of Shaw and dalot but even De Gea, some of the goals were just so avoidable and if you were more switched on you'd stop them (firminho goal and Gakpo's second i think it was). Just fed up of this happening.
