I’m going to get pelters for this but here goes…prior to selling McT at the end of the season, the lad needs to take Weghorst’s spot in the team. If ETH is so dead set on playing an average, ill suited to an AM/No.10 role, big fella up top, why not stick McT there instead!? At least until Tony is fit again!

He is faster than WW, a better presser, better in the air, knows where the goals are and is a better striker of the ball. Is he the answer…? Probably not but it depends on what the question is really…if the question happens to be “is Big Scott better than WW?”, then the answer is probably yes!
How is he a better presser?

If only football was that simple  McT would lack positional awareness and ability to link up with others in a more advanced position.

So McTominay scored 4 goals in 2 games, most of them by making runs from deep, from CM position but somehow that translates to him being a better option as a CF?

Wouldn't mind though, just to see how it goes. Hopefully in a dead rubber game or in last 30 mins of the game we are winning easily. I'm sort of convinced that it would be epic fail.

Nice try, Pep!

He should but he wont as unlike here his Scotland Manager, Fans and Team-mates support him. I have followed his career since the start, he has always been better higher up the pitch.
But not better than Fernandes. He’ll start though

It's clear to me that McTominay's best role is as the most advanced midfielder in a midfield 3 but we have Bruno for that and he's much better.

Can't be much less fruitful than our current first choice options amirite!?

Its the same for Sabitzer and Fred. All of them are better further up, but none of them better than Bruno, or Eriksen for that matter. We desperately need a proper deep lying midfielder.

Now do this for united, we are going to need players on form with the run we got coming up. Ridiculous run of games. We play Sevilla away on the 20th and brighton on the 22nd at Wembley for example. Silly.

The Brighton game will be moved to the Sunday 23rd.

Best player ever with the proper demonym in his name. Sorry, Stephen Ireland (not a demonym per se, but close enough).

Still ridiculous though isn’t it? Spain away on Thursday night, a Wembley semi final on the Sunday. It certainly puts us at a disadvantage. So we need as many players as possible firing on all cylinders and up for it, including this guy.

The same as it's been all season, same as before the Carabao Cup final (not away but still). If you want to compete in all competitions, you pay for it. Hope we beat Sevilla comfortably in the first leg. But of course I agree that it is demanding, I mean we're coming back from the international break with a light Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday (lunchtime) schedule. Hope Rashford, Sabitzer & Varane are fine and Eriksen is available soon.

It is the same.. but now it’s down to the nitty gritty. All or nothing, go hard or go home. We’re either going to win something else or not and it’s going to be decided over the next two months. Luck will come into play. Injuries will come into play. I don’t think we’ll beat Sevilla comfortably, it will be tough over both legs.. they’re never easy especially not in the europa league.

What you saying…? You agree with the rest!? :D

We were told what a terrific presser Wout was , look at his stats etc…crying out loud, watching him chugging up to a defender to “press” the ball is painful…by the time he reaches the defender the ball has been recycled twice! I love his endeavor but a pressing machine he is not. Scott has had half a season under ETH so knows what is required of the system but more importantly, he is quicker and more mobile and doesn’t move like he’s running through treacle…

Again, the caveat to playing Scott up top was “If ETH is so dead set on playing an average, ill suited to an AM/No.10 role, big fella up top”…

Apologies, just spotted there’s a thread in the main section on the very topic of McT up top…I’ll leave you to it folks!

I never doubt his defensive abilities, but as a no.9? you are joking aren't you
He is not. I don’t think he could hold up and lay off the ball: he’d be useless up there.

Scott is a box-to-box destroyer. He does best when he can be dynamic going forward.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

Agree with this entirely.

I wouldn't mind seeing him given the chance in the striker role on the off chance that it does work, but those stating that he'd definitely be better than Wout are showing a real lack of understanding of how important movement and positioning are. Those are things he already struggles with in his natural midfield role, and it's much more likely than not that he'd have no idea how to position himself at striker. Also those saying he would work as hard or press as well as Wout really overrate Scott in those attributes. He has the occasional match where he does it well, but the vast majority of the time he's bang average in them.

A headless chicken that just scored two goals against Spain
For us and for Scotland is completely different. My point was he isn’t a tactical player so won’t suit a team that’s trying to play a certain way and system like we are under ETH.

I have decided that I don't quite understand this lad. There is a bit of a player there, somewhere.. and last night he proved what he is capable of, and note there are v v v few centre-midfielders (not attacking midfielders...) who can offer goals. He can, and he should, far, far more consistently, but he seems to allow games to pass him by. He has to look at Eriksen, Casimero and learn that he needs to learn to determine matches.. not just play. Fred also does this, they both seem satisfied with 6/10 performances, regardless of result, and the odd outstanding performance, or sometimes, outstanding 45mins!

As it stand, he cannot start for us, because he simply hasn't shown enough. And that's on one person, and one person alone - himself.

And it's a great shame.

He's young, a decent player at arguably the greatest club in the world! Go out and play like that!

I think it's mostly speculation what you've written but pressing is the one thing I think Wout has been ok at. Still massively need an upgrade there, but I have zero confidence in McTominay being that player.

Or possibly the next Wout Weghorst, who scored 2 in 10 minutes in a world cup quarter final against Argentina. McTom's Scotland form doesn't mean he will repeat it for us.
That's the funny thing - people are acting like Weghorst has never scored goals - he's hardly prolific, but I don't get this speculation that McTominay is somehow a better goal-scorer.

Scotty has once again managed to throw sand in people's eyes. Can't wait for him to pick up his usual shit form and cost us a few points before the cycle starts again.
