Remember that look Antony gave him during the Forest game? It's clear that quite a few in the squad don't respect this guy as a player, let alone as the captain. One of the worst players in the team trying to organize and lead around much better players, why would they listen to him?

Sell this summer. I'd take even £25m, just want him gone. He brings panic to the team and the backline whenever he starts or is brought on, it's time to go. He has had so many embarrassing moments for the club, it's incredible. Captain of Manchester United, not even good enough to be here in the first place.

The passs was "accurate", but that's not really the problem, it's the quality of that pass that is. Just kicking the ball at him does not make it a good pass.

Pass should have been zipped out to his left foot so he could turn into the space first time. It was slow, bobbly and to his wrong side. Maguire actually had to check his movement to try and deal with it. Put any amount of players in there and they will struggle to come out of there with the ball.

This is exactly the sort of finer detail that makes the difference between fcuking up and conceding a goal and just about beating that press and taking those 3 players out of the game. People can blame Maguire all they like, but if I'm Maguire I'd be giving that cnut an absolute ear full for putting me in the shit like that.
Get a hold of yourself.

That "shit" you're talking about is a perfectly fine pass.

And a proper goalkeeper would smack you right in the face if you try pinning it on him.

Yeah well, check it then.
No point in discussing it when you can't see it clearly and watch it several times.

Pass to AWB was blocked.

Sevilla players purposely left Harry free so that the pass could be made. It's what's called a fake press.

Once he has the ball, considering he's the usual pressing point, you press him. And it worked.
They scored off his mistake.

You do that to any other CB in the league, you get left on your ass, and you're high press is broken.

That was a book example of how a GK should play the pass.
It was also a prime example of how a fake press should be executed.
And, it was also a perfect example of how to scout a bad center back.
Considering you have a scout tag, can't actually tell if you're pissing about or you actually believe Harry is even a decent player. Let alone a good one.
I watched the replay, no pass to AWB was not blocked, thanks for asking me to watch it again. What i noticed is pass was so weak that by the time Maguire touches the ball he was surrounded by 2 Sevilla players who were couple of yards away. Absolutely brain dead decision making by De Gea and even poor execution of the pass.

Same with Maguire, the moment he was closed instead of kicking it long or back to De Gea he made one more brain dead decision.

Also since you are a full member, not a newbie I'm not sure if you are a wum or really struggling to understand the posts. Just because I said De Gea is the biggest reason doesn't mean Maguire is decent player or good enough for ManUtd.

These aren't the same.

That pass was played to Martinez' right foot, as in his back foot, which allowed him to turn out like that, if DDG gives him that on his left foot, it's more similar.

De Gea plays the ball to Harry's right foot, which was wrong, it should have been fired into his back foot, (his left foot) then he can turn out in one motion. Because it's played to his wrong side, Maguire actually has to check his movement and ends up with no option but to try and scoop it to AWB.

.
Fascinating that you think playing it to a right footed player’s right foot is the “wrong” foot. If De Gea played it to his left foot the criticism would have been it was played to his weaker wrong foot!

Tbf Maguire could have easily played the pass back to De Gea. It was mistake by both of chuckle brothers. Problem with Maguire is, he is shit but he thinks he is some great ball playing CB.

Oh anyone wondering, no Lindelof isn't a chuckle brother, it's Maguire and De Gea.

He could yeah, but he's moving one way then he has to check his run to deal with a slow bobbly pass and gets crowded by 3 players and panics.

The ball out from DDG has to better there, I've said it on the other thread, these players and a lot of fans seem to think just kicking the ball to a player is a good pass. They totally ignore the quality of the weight, direction and how the ball comes to the receiever.

It's a really poor pass out to him that put him in a situation he doesn't need to be in, a better ball out and evsvn I think Maguire is capable of turning with it into midfield. He did on Sunday when he was under more pressure, granted it was on the halfway line, but the pass into him allowed him to do it.

Get a hold of yourself.

The right foot isn't which foot you kick with.

The ball should be played to his back foot, doesn't matter whether he's right-footed or left-footed. That ball has to be fired into his back foot. In this situation the back foot is his left foot.

You’re getting bogged down in minutiae of what didn’t happen instead of discussing what did, that happens a lot on this forum because people we’d themselves to previous points.

Had the ball been played to his left foot neither you or anyone else can categorically say what would have happened because it didn’t so how about we use the performance thread to discuss what did happen.

He had a pass onto his right foot & of the options he had he chose the worst.

My goodness.

And i thought this forum had some knowledgeable posters.

Yet, here we are again, same old story....

Blaming the GK for a "weak pass", passing it to his "wrong foot" and every other poor excuse you delusional people can think of.

Fine. I'm out. You win.

You can have your captain.

Not worth my nerves.

A lot of players have worn the United shirt and been found not good enough: Gibson, Miller, Eagles, Spector, Howard, Obertan, Fellaini, Kleberson, Djemba Djemba, Anderson, Kagawa, Mkhitaryan, Januzaj, Alexis, Sneiderlin, Love, Borthwick-Jackson, Tuanzebe, Memphis, Tosic, VDB to name but a few. Some of those were actually really skilled players who just couldn’t put it together at United. Some were trying to break into the first team and didn’t take their chance.

Maguire is the only player I can think of who is clearly not good enough but who keeps getting picked. Fellaini probably comes closest, although I never blamed Fellaini, I put him in the same bracket as Weghorst: trying their hardest, never shirking, clearly desperate to help the club — but I hated seeing Fellaini in the team. I feel the same about Maguire. He is the latest in a long line of players who didn’t work out, but for some reason he continues to play - and captain the club.

It’s really weird. Like, the money we spent on him is gone, we’re not getting it back, and it doesn’t soften the blow to add more games in the price breakdown. The only United players I hate would be Tevez and Ronaldo for their disrespect of the club, so I don’t hate Maguire, but it’s almost cruel to keep throwing him in knowing he’s going to feck up and get roasted by any half decent attacker. I hate watching Maguire play, like I hate watching Fred, even though they seem like friendly people.

The club needs to set some standards because right now we are sending some mixed messages on what’s acceptable!

You are talking absolute nonsense. First time I’ve heard anyone say a players weaker foot is the correct one to pass to in a pressure situation. Passing to his left foot means he can never play it first time.

Also that goal is just one of 100 mistakes both of them did in this tie. So what percentage of blame each gets for the first goal doesn't matter. Both are just not good enough.

If Maguire lets the ball run through his legs and turns, he takes three Sevilla players out of the game. Kinda thing Licha does in his sleep.

Imagine. When we bought Maguire they tried to say he was a ball playing centre back!

Yeah, he could. But it's Harry, he's prone to doing stupid stuff under pressure. If you're gonna give him the ball there, at least give him a good pass.

I have never loathed a player for our club so much. I normally try and back a player 100% but there is nothing redeemable with Maguire, poor player, poor speaker, poor captain. Just get him out the club.

I would say, I actually worry about his mental health. Unless he truly is oblivious to criticism it must be absolute hell.

totally agree. Harry is mentally in a very bad place and continually promoting him into the team ensures that nobody wins. He clearly loves the club, but is unaware that he’s not sufficiently skilled to play top tier and now has the added pressure of bags of horrendous mistakes - put him out of his misery

Tell me you've played football and had a coach at some point.

Back foot, back foot, back foot.

It's one of the oldest and simplest fecking rules of passing the ball, I teach it to 7 year olds every week.

Doesn't matter if the receiver is right or left footed. Pass should hit their back foot, you judge it based on their body shape and where the space is for them to play into. It makes it much easier for them to control the ball and turn into the space.

I agree with @roonster09. We can sit here arguing who was more at fault for the first goal until the cows come home (personally I'd say it's around 50-50) but it's pointless.

Both De Gea and Maguire are liabilities. For whatever reason, both of them crumble in high-pressure situations. Both need to be shipped out and replaced this summer.

Great point about the quality of pass. One thing that Martinez is deceptively excellent at. Direct and quick passes into the midfielder. It’s the difference between kick starting a counter attack or completely stalling it. Far too much of this lack of quality still, but this season has shown we are getting better at it.

Well, this is the Harry Maguire performance thread.

A unicorn with a black dildo stuck to his head is Harry Maguires Patronus.

And Manchester United is on the recieving end of that black dildo.

I have no idea how people can watch football and think some of these passes are good just because they get to the player.

Martinez is a great passer. His passing is just like Keane's accurate and through the lines, zipped, well weighted and to the receievers correct foot. But, most of those players were capable of it, I've said it before SAF always made sure his first team squad players technically very sound. They were all capable of playing these passes regularly, this squad, not so much.

Need another 5 or 6 players of that quality in the team.

Yes but you need a football IQ for that... Too much to ask of Harry "the dumpster fire" as someone called him last week. I thought it was harsh then, but it probably was a compliment...

Yes he made a mistake but we should not be judging Maguire just on that 1 mistake. If you look at the overall game and everytime he has played for us this season, we look nervous playing it out the back.

He is such a bad CB, he can't do anything right, everytime there is a long ball, he wins the header but directs it straight to the opponent, his tackling is crap, his anticipation is rubbish.

PLaying out the back, he takes years to pass, there was one instance he took so long Eriksen had to come take the free kick for him because Maguire so bad.

He needs to be the first one out the door.

Maguire couldn’t pass back, as there was a Sevilla player between him and DDG, and DDG made no attempt to create an angle after making the pass. His options were trying to turn (but without really knowing what was behind him), trying to get it out to AWB first time (which was tough with Lamela closing in and he messed up) or whacking it out of play (probably for a corner).

I’d probably put 75% of blame for the goal on DDG. He should never have played the pass and it was badly executed.

couldn’t watch it last night and was expecting a terrible pass into trouble from DeGea.

seeing the highlights this morning though, Maguire is in acres of space initially to receive the ball. He doesn’t go to it, his body shape is all wrong and his decision making when it gets to him his woeful.

its not a great decision by DeGea, but from that position (when the ball is travelling to Maguire) it shouldn’t end up with us conceeding.

Yeah, De Gea had complete view of the game. Once the pass was played, i was talking about those options.

You are right, pass back was not on. There was a player in between. He tried to play AWB and the ball was intercepted easily. Looks like only other option is just booting it out with his weaker foot.

Anyways end result is both are shit and should be blamed for the goal and the tie. De Gea is the biggest reason for losing this tie.

There is always a excuse for Harry. Look at some posts here. People even blame De gea more than Harry for that goal because Harry can't do what average defender can; control the ball, turn and pass to midfielders.

It is always and i mean always someone else to share the blame. Ridiculous. In reality, if ETH played anybody else instead of him, we would be in semis today.

If EtH played someone in the goal we would be in semi finals. I don't know why you are so blind to see De Gea mistakes.

Almost everyone blaming De Gea also said Maguire also made mistake and probably as bad as De Gea and there are few like you and the other poster who are saying first goal has nothing to do with De Gea.

It's so weird.
