The only team that matters
He also seems to have toughened up a bit, in the past he always seemed to lose the physical battles but not so much now, given the improvements in other players you do have to question the coaching under previous ,managers

If a player needs 6 years and a whole squad change of personnel and managers to perform at a decent level, then the chances are not that they were being held back, it's just that they weren't that good individually to rise above that in the first place.
This statement is true for Luke Shaw as well, should we be sh1tting on him too?

Are you deliberately missing the rest of my post and quoting out of context? Players like Shaw, Rashford, Martial, AWB, Fred and others have either shown high levels of ability or some sort of consistent high levels dominance of form i.e it was clear/undeniable despite their inconsistencies and poor periods. In the past 6 years, no one has ever realistically claimed that Lindelof had the potential to be some 'great' centre back or had fantastic ability; his biggest claim to fame is that he's been available, is technically sound, a 'safe defender' and doesn't make 'obvious mistakes'. What I think of his quality is another discussion but the original point is that for some reason, Lindelof the player in people's mind is that he's some underrated talent and he's been held back by others, when he's not shown anything consistently similar to the above players mentioned to be given that massive benefit of the doubt.

People use the 'he was playing in front of a scared De Gea and behind McFred' like it's some insult to him and held him back but will bizarrely turn the other cheek and say 'he was playing great as part of a defence with Maguire, which conceded very little, see he's always been a good performer'. It completely and conveniently ignores the fact De Gea, Maguire and McFred also contributed to that massively themselves with the deep defence/counter attacking approach we had.

You people are insane

I didn’t even want to sound like Lindelof isn’t deserving of praise, he is, but come on
I am not saying he will keep Martinez out - because he probably wont - but at least it doesn't feel like a big drop in quality when he is playing. Him, Martinez, Varane and a replacement for Maguire - and we look rock solid in central defense - especially as Shaw can play there as well.

It's hard to claim potential when he simply is one.

Lindelof starts in PL this season: 2-1, 1-3, 2-1, 3-0, 3-0, 2-0, 2-2, 1-0, 0-1, 0-1, 2-0, 1-0, 4-1

Goals conceded when Lindelof came on as a sub 1, 1, 3,

Total 15 goals conceded in equivalent of about 14 full games

Discounting games against Man City away, Liverpool away, Newcastle away and Arsenal away, 11 goals conceded in equivalent of 13 + a bit full games

Martinez started those heavy defeats. If you discount those games, 18 goals conceded in his 20 other PL starts

It looks to me as though United's defensive problems in the last few years have far more to do with the work-rate and defensive competence of our attacking players than the names of the CBs. To give an example of this, Hall created two huge chances simply by advancing up the pitch, receiving the ball then crossing to Mudryk and Havertz, because first Antony, then Sancho, failed to track his run from deep.

I hope we keep him, but if he wants to leave for regular first team football I can't say I blame him.

He started 11th consecutive game today and will surely start in the final. It just doesn’t get more regular than that :)

Left this forum.
If he wants to play in a top club in Europe there will be competition in all teams. So if Maguire leaves and with a fragile Varane, he will get a lot of playtime. Why leave then with that salary. It’s more if the club wants the money and Maguire can’t be sold.

But when Licha is back and we no doubt sign a CB he knows he’s going to be pushed down the pecking order again

Never been a fan of course and he had one of if not the worst start for a player I've seen at the club after signing. However.

In the last month or so he's done himself a lot of favours and looks more like the player he should be if he wants to be a CB. He's done well. He's been at the standard we should want for a squad player who can come into the team and compete for a spot. On current form I like him more than Maguire and just a sliver over Varane, so of our current options (which I dont think are good enough and we need to improve on) I'd have him as our best RCB.

However with a year left on his contract either we can get some money for him now, or likely pay him more to stick around as a squad option. Either is fine by me. I fully expect us to sign a better right footed CB than our current options to come in and start - hopefully Kim if the current rumour is true

He's in a tricky situation. He's good enough to start for many teams but the club and fans clearly love Kim, and he'd be kicked back down to 4th. Will he be happy to sit and wait until Varane breaks down again.

His situation is similar to Fred's. Good enough to start for many clubs and more of a squad option at United.

We’re about to trigger the extension so the contract runs until 2025.

I dont think we will sign kim. Lindelof will be no 3, Rice as emergency RCB & Shaw emergency LCB.
Signing Kim to drop Varane seems unrealistic.

To be perfectly honest, I hadn’t been a fan of Lindelof for a LONG time, but he’s adapted his game unlike Maguire and he’s been excellent since Martinez gott injured.

@A-man Played with Maguire and still showed aggressiveness and not passive and not coward. Another evidence that when Lindelof being reactive, passive and being pussied before, it wasn't due to Maguire. Since the Brighton game in the semi final, he decided to be aggressive, proactive, and willing to stuck in during the 50:50 challenge. It wasn't down to Maguire, it was down to himself. Or to be specifically, he only just learnt what being defender is all about after watching Varane and Martinez playing.

I wonder what he will do now. He is excellent no3 choice to have but if all rumours are true and we are buying another (expensive) defender then Lindelof will drop on being 4th choice.
He is too good to be 4th choice and plsying 15 games per season

Sorry missed your post.
My guess it’s mainly to instructions and training and implementing a system of how to play that has made Lindelof play higher up, more aggressive and more ball winning. His role before was to clean up behind Maguire. We see the same for Varane who has changed his game. I’m confident this comes from the manager.

Being a covering CB more than a pushing has nothing to do with lack of bravery or being a pussy. Lindelof and Varane have been more the covering type of CBs, and Maguire, Bailly and Martinez pushing aggressive types. Different strengths and roles, both needed. ETH seems to like both CBs to both push and cover.

Lindelof was pussy prior the Brighton semi final FA Cup. You just need to stop guessing, everytime you guessed, you got it wrong.

Had a good game, but still think he could have headed that ball before it bounced for the first goal... Though to be fair you still wouldn't expect Gundogan to lash it in like that

He has certainly added aggression to his game which is great to see. All his other attributes have always been okay - a pretty good 3rd choice centre back imo.

His fans/defenders coming in to defend better than the Swede. No surprise.

Right on cue

It was clearly ETH's instructions to tell him not to attack the ball or put pressure on the bounce.

Spoke too soon. Leopard doesn't change its spots.

Typical Lindelof game that we've seen for 6 years. Did 'decent', no 'major mistakes' but just an overall liability when the going gets tough. Set the tone with the on-his-heels passivity, letting the ball bounce and waiting for someone else deal with it for that header. Watch the excuses come in that it was someone's fault though, which is always the case.

After that mistake, he then wakes up and only then plays more proactively. After that, he makes a few interceptions, watches the game go past him and let others do the job in front of him.

Claims of him replacing Varane and Martinez based on what 10-15 recent games? Fecking jokers.

And, shocking no one, you're here to moan about him.

Should have directed the first aerial he won against Haaland better instead of into the centre but after that our best and most active defender.
