I've followed this thread on and off and its the same stuff over and over again. I just find it funny how people are disgusted and up in arms over a Qatari taking over United because of human rights issues (that he personally *may* not be guilty of personally, could hold a different viewpoint altogether, I dont know the guy). There are soooo many things connected to Qataris/Saudis etc, people just dont look enough or don't want to look because they'd realise that alot of the things they enjoy are tainted.

It's now speculation that 9-2 foundation legal team might be in NY because of NYSE #Man Utd listing and needing to sign documents with the exchange besides Raine group. If Raine breaks the news the stock might be halted prior. Hoping for more very soon.

Every so often in this thread some braindead idiot makes some version of the following argument:

"Do you have the same morals in all areas of your life? Or do you use an iphone? Wear Nike clothes? How is your laptop made? Where does the petrol in your car come from?" Etc.

Which is an obviously stupid argument because absolutely nobody with an ounce of common sense thinks the moral standard required to object to someone owning the football club you support should also require you to give up things actually required to live and function in society, or force you into major life decisions. These are not comparable things.

The example of your friends' jobs fall into the same dynamic. They need to work to actually live and function in society. And while they could possibly change jobs to one that isn't in some way connected to oil states, that would be a massive life-commitment to make for moral reasons, and a wildly impractical standard to expect people to live their lives by.

Which means it's not at all comparable to the very minimal moral standards required to take the position (almost totally consequence-free for your actual life) that "Qatari state ownership of Manchester United is bad and we should be against it". It's a very low bar people are failing to meet, which is why they are (and will continue to be) criticised as overly amoral.

Do you need to wear Nike clothes to live and function in society? Do you need an iphone?

Pretty much same as myself; I grew up in northern England, I've supported United since a boy, I've moved to Australia, and like you, I've been less and less engaged with the club ever since, due to a number of factors. As you say, the drive to watch and talk about football isn't there. Back home it was all we talked about, go to the pub and watch the football, talk to mates and strangers about the football. It doesn't happen here, everyone is watching and talking about AFL instead (go Richmond!). As such, I follow my footie team as much as I do United now. There's also the getting up at 1 in the morning to watch a game, the disconnect between players and fans (they're multi, multi millionaires now, back in the 80's only the very elite ended up making good money out of the game), plus the artificial financial doping rise of Chelsea and City just turned me cold to it all.

I'll still follow the results, and I'll still be pleased when United win, but it'll never ever be like it was again. Mbappe or anyone else would never compete with Eric or Robbo as a legend in my book. I don't judge anyone and if people want to win at all costs then fair enough, but I'm close to just giving up on the whole thing now in all honesty.
Screw Richmond (from a Bombers fan)

I just posted what this guy complained about :D

You are right here. Trying to justify buying "tainted" products because you need them when you could find alternatives that are more ethically made. Don't get me wrong I own an iPhone, I wear Adidas etc.. but I don't claim that there aren't any issues with how these items are made.

What else can we do as fans of United?

Even on a state level, Qatar is one of the closest allies to the UK, both politically and financially.
Probably not a great idea to use the British Government as a guide for our moral compasses though.

No I won't expect that, because that's stupid, and I expect most people not to be that stupid.
You might be a genuine good person in real life but your tone is coming across pretty badly here. Get down off your high horse and educate rather than dictate.

I hope I'm wrong but I think there's at least a week to go yet. Both bidders have reached their maximum, but the Glazers will still try and squeeze some more out before selling. Qatar announced their last bid was final, so the Glazers have had to play it cool for a bit. Their next step will be to leak that the Ineos bid is slightly preferable, even though it isn't, and they are close to agreeing it. Qatar will play it cool for a while and then re-state that their final bid was indeed their final bid, but that it is still on the table. The Glazers will play it cool a bit longer, then accept they can't get any more and agree. Qatar, end of next week. If there is anything in this theory we can expect stories about how the Ineos bid is better quite soon.

Changing your job is obviously by most standards a major life decision, let alone emigrating to another country. Certainly far, far, far more consequential than what we're talking about in this thread.

Because absolutely nobody is saying you should quit being a United fan. Just that you should be against state ownership of United, something that requires absolutely nothing from you beyond holding that opinion and has zero impact on what will actually happen in terms of ownership. That's the remarkably low threshold of moral opinion people are failing to meet.

Though I will say that if someone ever finds themselves actually thinking "the unilateral decison I made to uproot my wife and kids' lives by emigrating to another country indefinitely was much easier than not supporting a football team would be", then they should seriously consider their life priorities.
So would you be cheering hard if, under Jassim, then United win the League title?

The issue with this is that there's some sort of definite line decided by you here, as if you got that authority to decide what's 'minimal moral standards'. If you are going to call me amoral for not towing to your line, then the expect to be held to higher standards in all aspects of life.
And we're back to the people have to be against every injustice and evil in the world or give a feck about nothing logic.

Stop cheering it on?

Yawn....go and have a cup of coffee mate.
Such wit.

Yeah this is a football team we are talking about not a political party. We watch for some light relief and a break from every day life on a weekend. We don’t need sanctimonious lectures on morals or what awful people we are. Some of us quite happily separate the two and sleep very soundly at night.
You know what you are.

Qatar has had what, 3 final bids now? I think they'd likely bid again if needed. Their offer is so much more straightforward than SJRs.

Seems like INEOS bid is an absolute nightmare that would result in not only issues now, but further issues down the line, possibly including lawsuits and issues with the Glazers too

Do you need Nike clothes in particular? No. But you need clothes, and you'll have a hard time going through life without buying any clothes that come without some moral baggage. Especially if you need to buy cheaper clothes for economic reasons.

Ditto smartphones. I don't need an Iphone in particular (and indeed don't have one), but I absolutely need a smartphone to function in society, not least because it is essential to the job/career that provides me with money for food, heat, shelter. And I take it a read that the manufacturing of whatever phones/laptops I use will at some point carry some negative consequences.

Absolutely nobody with an ounce of common sense would expect the moral threshold required to give these things up to be the same as the moral threshold required to be against state ownership of the team you support, something that carries literally zero practical consequences in your life.

It's a ridiculous argument that I don't believe people actually make with any sincerity, because I don't believe they're that stupid. Just extremely disingenuous.

Just to counter this point changing jobs is not a major life decision in my opinion, but I am a contractor and choose to swap jobs every few months as well as sometimes the work being completed and time to move on.

Changing teams would be far more impactive and is more of a deep personal connection for decades of my life.

I have a long term GF and home but I don’t need to change country or location as I live in London and most roles I do are somewhat remote.

Maybe if I had kids it would be different but I’m not so sure.

I don't understand why INEOS is only bidding for part of the club and not 100%. If it is because they lack funding to do so, what chance that they will invest in infrastructure when they have not committed to do so?

On the other hand, why does SJ not just make an offer for part of the club? They would blow Ineos out of the water. After they have control, they can do what they will at their own pace?

Some of the things don't make sense to me.

Because the Glazers don't own 100% of the club so they can't sell 100% of it.

The unfortunate aspect in this saga is that the Glazers have no feeling at all for the club, their interest remains solely on themselves and money. The fact that dragging it on may lead to failings to strengthen the playing roster and further delay outgoings mean nothing if they can squeeze another dollar from the purchasers.

When their whole rationale in buying the club for so little outlay was ultimate income and profit, here we are. Exacerbated by promoting a hooray Henry into the Chief Executive role as a reward and watching his failure in transfers and stadium improvements continue without comment, confirm they are the worst type of owners. The sooner they are relieved of ownership, the quicker the club can rebound.

Regardless of whether you think it's a major life decision or not, it is unquestionably a bigger decision than deciding you don't want state-ownership of United.

Because all the latter requires from you is literally that thought and nothing else. You don't have to do anything, you don't have to say anything and it has zero impact on what will actually happen.

So trying to compare the strength of moral feeling required to hold that opinion with the strength of moral feeling required to change your job and emigrate is insane.

I think so, as I would still be a United fan. And I don't expect anyone else to stop being a United fan either.

I just won't be as happy supporting United under state ownership as I would be other ownership. And that would probably change the way I consume football, as the criticism United's ownership would correctly get in the media would be a drag. I wouldn't be on this forum any more for a start, as it would be easier to enjoy the actual football without being exposed to the constant noise.

I dont see anyone criticising City's owners or Newcastle's in the media. Instead there has been a wankfest. It depends really. If we go PsG route of making a fool of ourselves in every department, then yeah. But if we start playing amazing football nobody will care about ownership model etc.

As for me, my public support for Utd might end. No more status, stories or posts about how great Utd are. I dont want to draw any attention through that medium. I would still support the club as a state ownership cant take something away from me which is important to me.

The arguments about 'sporting merit' and comparing us to City are inaccurate.

One, clubs have had cash forever. Having cash and having rich owners is not "cheating". What City have done has no sporting merit because they broke the rules (115 times apparently). Breaking the rules is cheating. Simple.

Secondly, we are owed £2BN as far as I am concerned. We built the World's biggest and possibly best football club and then, through no fault of our own, had to endure a now banned leveraged buyout that plunged the club into a downward spiral and has cost us well over £1BN in interest payments and dividends. Until that money is artificially injected back into the club, I'll accept no arguments about us having some kind of advantage because I see it purely as repairing the damage that the Premier League/FA has enabled with their greed.

Plus, how many people have revelled in our downfall? Despite all the fans it has disenfranchised and turned away from the game. How much help have we had from rival fans/the media/the FA, the Premier League in our efforts to fight Glazer ownership? So funny that suddenly all these people have strong opinions about who owns us and the morality/ethics of it now it might HELP us on-pitch. Where were these dissenting voices when the Glazers rolled into town? I remember and the silence was deafening, besides the "USA, USA" chants from the away section every week.

Prior to the Al Watan, lost in translation, tweet which led in turn to the dry run celebration/suicide watch Monday evening/Tuesday morning madness, there was a suggestion that the Glazers were going to meet on Tuesday.

Given the previous, it would be logical to assume that the flagging bidder is now being given, due to the Glazers generosity, using the Phil Jones - never leave a man behind approach, an opportunity to finagle their finalest bid.

We should assume now that there will be an emergency meeting of the Glazer clan, possibly as early as next Tuesday, subject to AV’s hairdressing appointment, with the local miracle worker, being rescheduled.
