You offered two examples of Chelsea not selling early and having to let a player go for free to prove your point. I gave you two examples of us selling players early and well. We sold Lukaku for £73m only slightly less than the £80 we paid and we sold Dan James to Leeds for £25, more than the £14m we paid. There are exceptions to every rule like Lukaku and James for us but generally Chelsea make decisions on players quickly and sell them if they think they aren't good enough and we tend to hold on to our players and give the additional chances if they have a bad season like Sancho, Antony, DVB, AWB, Fred, Pogba, Lingard,, Bailly, Maguire etc and by the time we make a descion they have lost significant value and so we have a reputation for selling badly.
I gave two examples because I couldn’t be arsed doing further research. They aren’t the only two. As United fans we focus more on ours and maybe don’t remember Loftus-Cheek just left Chelsea after 9 years.

United sell badly because we pay our players too much money and the accountant running the club cared more about assets on a balance sheet. It’s got feck all to do with how we judge players because countless managers tried to get rid of players like Rojo etc.

but that same approach from chelsea has seen them throw De Bruyne and Salah away. so its far from perfect

How I'd love to see a fit Martial and a healthy partnership with Hojlund this season.

Got to say, I know the announcement is delayed due to Visa or whatever, but i'm quite surprised not one picture of the guy has leaked somewhere online, the only picture we have of him is in the back of the car leaving the airport and even then you can barely see him.

He may have done, but the 'minutes' part is the real issue and will only continue to be an issue. 51 league appearances over the last 3 seasons out of a possible 114. That means he's more often than not available. You just can't rely on that within the squad.
I 100% agree I just think it was a weird metric for the poster to bring up due to Martial excelling in that metric.

120 minutes per G/A, exactly the same as Garnacho. But they both only played around 1400 minutes.

Rashford had 105 min per G/A
Yeah so it's pretty great. The issue with Martial isn't his goals per minute it is his fitness.

Mentioning Rashford is odd as Rashford had 41 goal contributions last season. From memory that is the best a player has done for us in those numbers for over a decade apart from maybe 1 season from Bruno.

It was just weird that you said the goals per minutes is the reason Martial won't be the starting striker.

Didn't Martial have a brilliant goals to minutes output last season?
0.46 goals per 90, Hojlund had 0.44 goals per 90 minutes

Looked at basically the top 25 actual CFs with the most goals of the past 20-25 or so years (and some other current guys to compare), and these are the guys who had more than Hojlund in a big 5 league (+Portuguese league and Eredivisie) at that age (basically turned 19 before the season or by the end of the calendar year, but not 20):
  • Haaland - 1.1 goals per 90
  • Isak - 0.86 (Eredivisie)
  • Lukaku - 0.76
  • Owen - 0.64
  • Torres - 0.60
  • Aguero - 0.58
  • Evan Ferguson - 0.57 (at 18, not 19, but smaller sample)
  • Van Persie - 0.51 (Eredivisie)
  • Eto'o - 0.47
  • Rooney - 0.45
  • Martial - 0.45 (was an elite talent let's not forget... But also a wide forward so a bit different)
These guys had less:
  • Makaay - 0.40
  • Cavani - 0.40
  • Henry - 0.39
  • Suarez - 0.39
  • Benzema - 0.39
  • Vlahović - 0.36
  • Higuain - 0.14
Most CFs just aren't getting actual minutes in a big league at that age. Villa, Vieri, Shevchenko, Gomez, Lewandowski, Kane, Ibra, Huntelaar, Falcao, Dzeko, Drogba and then current guys who had some hype like Jović, Bellotti, Scamacca, Osimhen weren't yet playing in big leagues (or relevant minutes). And if you look at the ones who actually play a physical style of play where they back into defenders often and have to make more of an impact through their overall play rather than just being small guys or technicians who avoid contact (much easier to break through and impact first team), this list gets quite a bit smaller. He's in very good company anyway.

Sorry I know you went to a lot of work there so I just want to understand it.

What are you trying to show with the numbers?

That the amount of players with better stats isn't large and that they are almost exclusively top scorers in their prime?

Than Hojlund whose thread this is about...People talking about his goals all month, when in fact his goals per 90 minute ratio is actually amount europe's elite over the past 25 years or so at that age?
Right but I'm not sure what that has to do with my post?

Someone said "Martial will be second choice to Hojlund, the reason is that Martial's goals to minutes ratio isn't good enough."

I said "Wasn't Martial's goals to minute record great last season? The reason he won't play is injuries."

You then showed the stats that Martial's goal to minutes was better than Hojlund and a bunch of other good strikers.

So yes, I agree that I am right! (I really wish people would read the conversations they are replying to more often on here.)

A real shame that we have such a shit schedule for our remaining preseason matches because I really wanted him to play some minutes before the real action begins. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to not put one of our remaining preseason matches in midweek since we won't begin until the first Monday of the season?

We just need martial to be fit for just the first 5 games to give Hojlund some bedding in time. Then Martial can happily return back to the physio table.

In a functioning team (and with Onana and Mount team will be functioning better) there will be more goals from 1 on 1 and tap ins (on the basis of chances created) - Martial is no good in either.

Planning does seem rubbish.

We had Wrexham and Madrid the next day.

Now Lens and Athletic the next day.

Meaning we had mixed squads and a mix match of players.

Why weren’t the games spaced out to let the first team get more minutes?

I am guessing they will have a behind closed doors friendly next week.

So you don't think if you created a bunch of 1 on 1 chances that Martial could finish them at a good rate if he was fit?

Your argument is that Martial's goals to game record was great last year but if we create more easy chances it'll be an decrease?

Realistically I see him starting some of the first 5 or 6 PL games but sharing that Main Role with Martial and Rashford. I genuinely think Greenwood might be staying now, irrespective of what fans want, they will make him and his partner do a series of interviews about family life and mistakes made etc, then gradually bring him back, training first then on the bench, then a 20 minute cameo from bench. He won’t be fully integrated until late October/Early November they will not start him period, however well he plays.

Our first seven PL Games Wolves(H), Tottenham(A), N Forrest (H), Arsenal(A), Brighton(H),Burnley(A),Palace(H)

We also. have 2 CL matches on 19th September and 26th September. Those 9 games are critical we had an average start last season with 12 points after 2 games were postponed. This season we need 15/16 points from those 7 games which will not be easy especially Brighton, Spurs, Burnley and Arsenal. I think we will play two different formations home and away.
Playing Spurs away early on in the season is definitely a bonus. It took Postecoglou a couple of months to get going at Celtic, bedding players in and getting his ideas across. Lost his opening game and only won 3 of his opening 7 games in the league which you can imagine the reaction to up here.

If he has the same sort of start at Spurs, loses Kane and hasn;t replaced him then there probably wouldn't be a better time to face them. That being said they were in terrible form when we played them there last season and we didn't win that one either!

For the first time in a long time Martial will have someone younger than him to compete with. It was easy for him to hide behind self-pity when he was benched for Lukaku or Ronaldo. I think the last time he had competition like this was when Rashford was breaking through. We may unexpectedly see a good form Martial at least for a little while this season.

You nutbars. He’s not going to be sitting on the bench for too long. We’ve spent a lot of money getting him in because he has qualities that we don’t currently have.
on the bench til Christmas? Really? Give your heads a wobble

Martial and Hojlund both haven’t played in pre-season so both have to be eased in.

We may see Sancho as false nine for a few games.

Exactly super difficult start and we need to start scoring goals.

I just don’t think he will be having many 1 on 1 opportunities, as it was never his specific strength. His game is different. While Rashford, Garnacho, Hojlund and maybe also a suspended player will benefit more from it

His game is that he scores goals, brings others into the game and is a very good finisher.

The point made was that the reason he wouldn't play is because his goals to game record is not good enough. Well his goals to game record is great so that is factually wrong. The reason Martial won't play is because of his injury record.

He has decent analysis.

Find it wierd that these youtubers say yes to be sponsored by these websites that have a very shady reputation.

Edit: See he changed to another sponsor with a alittle better reputation than JerseyFifa who sponsored alot of his videos.
Everyone's got to start somewhere to pay the bills. If I was doing Youtube channel, I would gladly take the local sex shop, Dildos & More's sponsorship.

I put martials goals to minute ratio showing it was decent but nothing special and pretty much the same as 19/20 year old hojlund. While on the topic of goals to minute ratio, I then put the goals to minute rations for others at that age showing hojlund is in a very good group. Having 0.46 or 0.44 goals per 90 is mediocre in your prime. Doing it at 19/20 is very good.

What great goal record are you talking about? he has 89 goals in 310 matches for Man Utd - it’s 0.287 goals per game. It is by no means “great goal scoring record” for a club of Man Utd calibre, when related to an attacker

His goalscoring record last season. Which was better than Hojlund's.

What???
Over 22/23 season Hojlund has scored 16 goals in club competitions, making also 7 assists. Martial scored 9 goal, making also 3 assists.

Hojlund has also scored 6 more goals in 6 official games for Denmark national team last season.

So if we account for national team performances (and why shouldn’t we), Hojlund last season stands at 102 min per G/A - very close to Rashford (98 min per G/A if including club and national team, 105 min per G/A for club only). Martial was only 120 min per G/A with very low availability
