Do you mean these 2 goals?

Probably. Neither looks offside on the stills. Then our defence is still a worry to that dreaded ball over the top.

Apparently Davies was electric and Musiala and Gnabry very good too.

Really thought they'd go for Kim this summer, perfect profile for them and easy to obtain because of the clause. Just need to put in the leg work to beat the other clubs. So relieved they didn't.

Based on the highlights I saw the game coud have finished 10-7 to Bayern with better finishing from both teams

That defence is not at all robust. I also think they have lost a lot of big game experience with Henderson, Milner, Firminho and Fabinho all exiting in the same summer.

They will score a lot but their defense is a mess.
That's weird though given that it's not that different from the defense which was our strong point a few seasons ago. Even if VVD has taken a step backwards since then it still should be more than capable enough to keep us in all games.

I think the problem isn't the defense as such it's rather a combination of (i) not having an elite midfielder in front of that defense, like we did when Fabinho was on his game a few seasons ago and (ii) not putting enough pressure on the opponent's defense because our pressing system isn't up to standards (yet/anymore), they get too much time to put long balls over the top of TAA which is our weak point (as someone like Rashford has proven time and time again the last few years).

In an ideal world we'd sign that Andre fella and Lavia and they provide some much-needed protection in front of our defense, but I think it's more likely that it'll stay our achilles heel for the entire season. Hopefully Alisson keeps up his amazing performances and is able to keep us in the game when our defense struggles.

Also, many more PL sides have improved how they play through a press. The days when teams used to turn up at Anfield and stand there like startled deer under your intense high press are far fewer than 3-4 years ago

Their defence will be a complete shambles again. It has got worse yet they are still insistent on playing a high line. Long may it continue.

Only saving grace is Konate is quick and a decent defender. Robertson I think will be poor and TAA will be great going forward but cost them several times a season.

There's a rumour that Ryan Reynolds wants to buy FSG out so that he can have both a film franchise & a football club called Deadpool

yeah we're a mess. feck knows how we've managed to be without a single holding midfielder at this stage. Classic FSG really.

We'll sign a single one, one as the window closes, after we've dropped points and that will be hailed as a great pre season. Then we'll sign the player we were supposed to sign for the position a year later.

Isn't Thiago that?
What midfield combinations have you played in the preseason?

Liverpool with all those forwards will be one of the top scorers in the league no doubt. Salah, Jota, Gapko, Diaz and Núñez will all score bags full and they’ll hammer a few teams. I don’t know much about their big midfield signing, is he worth 60m, what will he add? I’m shocked they haven’t added to their defence and don’t think their midfield is scary to anyone. I think it’ll be a long season for them personally. Their days of dominance are done.

Jones sitting in front of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai. It's not great.

Thiago is a mostly theoretical option. Also not sure he's cut out for defensive midfielder with this line up. It'd be different if he were sitting in front of guys like Wijnaldum, Milner and Hendo.

Maybe it's because it's Monday and I just started work again, but I agree with the pessimism.

Having two new guys, perma injured Thiago, Jones, Bajcetic (who's got like 10 senior appearances to his name) and Elliot as midfield options is suicidal.

Thiago will miss most of the season and the jury's very much still out for the latter three.

Add to that injury prone Konate and van Dijk with big question marks over him as 1st choice cb's.

Don't remember feeling this negative before the start of a season.

Really?

I don't see the same 'fatigue' happening this time as we had a quiet/uneventful previous season this time. That's almost 50% of our problems disappeared overnight. We will be starting our new 3 year juice cycle so we should be demons.

Plus we have two sets of fresh legs in midfield. Last season we had zero all the way through. Konate is a big worry if injured but he was last season and we still almost made top 4. Now we have to make top 5.

I think your memory needs work. :)

Remember when Liverpool were held up on here as a shining example for getting transfers done early and we were the shits compared to them?

I don't doubt the players will be up for it, but I fear the midfield is too light weight + I have little confidence in our cb's.

And yeah, I'm happy with Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, but the rest of them give me little confidence. We also don't have a dm.

But like I said, I'm back at work and the weather sucks, so chances are I'll feel different on Sunday when the sun shines again:lol:

Yeah, doesn't look great. Plus Thiago seems to be injured permanently or most of the time.

The bookies have Liverpool 3rd favorites for the title behind Arsenal and City.
That’s not a surprise, there are many that believe last season was a blip due to the two years before. Bookies pick favs based on a range of factors including the amount of bets.
I do not believe it’s a blip but if I’m wrong then they are in with a shout.

Have Liverpool even strengthened this Summer? Yes they signed Mac Allister and Szoboszlai (haven't seen enough of him to judge) but they also removed some leaders from the dressing room and although they were at the end of their careers they still had leadership qualities that are vital for a team like Liverpool. I feel as though Henderson will be a big miss for this reason.

Have they addressed their issues at CB and do they have anyone other than Salah who's consistent up top? Can Salah drag them through another season?

Its the same questions as last season, although with less leaders in the squad.
