I assumed that the likes of Stokes, Root, Malan, Roy would be getting more time in the middle, but didn’t realise at the time we had a couple of warm up games in India starting four days after the last Ireland game.

I have to be honest, I don’t even understand the point of the T20s against New Zealand, unless we’re contractually obligated to play a certain amount in a summer. It would have made more sense to play another ODI series surely.
Ideally England would have played 7 ODIs instead of 4 ODI and 4T20s against NZ but I suspect there were TV contractual reasons why the latter happened.

Brook's best way into the side is probably opening instead of Roy so be interested to see how he does here.

Just switched on but looks like a decent score from England but below some of the monster scores we've become accustomed to the last few years. Such a strong middle order though with Stokes, Buttler and Livingstone. Interesting that Brook opened instead of Root or Buttler, definitely looks like they tested him there as a potential alternative route into the side.

Great chase from NZ, unlike the England of recent years to set less than a run a ball.

The 6-4 from Rashid a minute ago that took it under 6 an over required was significant.

England need a hero!

We need wood to stay fit for the six weeks otherwise our seam bowling looks there for the taking.

I am very confused at the playing 11 right now. They have 4 games and they are still trying to give people a go. No idea why Curran didn’t play this game. Even Wood hasn’t played since the Ashes. I understand that you want to preserve Wood but he has been resting for over 40 days now

Conway and Mitchell were pretty awesome out there. Some of the hitting from Mitchell was exceptional.

Has that Turner guy had a look yet? There could be some ferocious pace in this attack if they went with both Woods, Turner and Atkinson. I'm sure they won't but it would be tantalising!

They're mixing the players up and not playing the best XI, Curran and Wood will play at least 2 of the NZ ODIs. The thinking is to rotate the seamers throughout the tournament

Brook and Stokes crippled us with only scoring 77 off 110, that was pre 2015 WC levels of shite, like has Brook not been watching Roy, Bairstow and Hales open the batting the last 8 years teeing off ball 1, they face 41 balls and they be on 50+.

As if the prep could go any worse for England we now have a washout or probably a t20 here so even lesser games to get some form

I know England figured out a formula just in time for the World T20 tournament last year but ever since they’ve been good at test cricket they’ve lost their way in the shorter formats. I feel like they are incapable of being good at both at the same time .

They’re basically relying on their tried and trusted champions figuring it out on the fly in the tournament.

Fantastic innings from Livi.

Can strike a ball as well as anyone but that's probably the first time he's actually constructed an innings.

England absolutely need a cluster of early wickets to have any chance from here, though.

There's still two more ODIs vs New Zealand, and two warm up games in India so still time for things to click before it starts.

Conditions in India will be different anyway so it'll be more important who adapts to the conditions rather than piling on runs against NZ here. The best thing from this series has been Livingstone hitting some form after a tough year with injuries though, he's surely cemented himself in the side and having him at 6 makes the batting order so well balanced. Sam Curran batting at 8 is insanely strong, can any other side field a batting lineup that deep?

I'd barely pay any attention to this series TBH. I think England will be very strong come India. The majority of our batsmen have played there previously etc. Slight question marks over the pace department but i'd have us comfortably in the big 4 favs. England, India, Aus, Pakistan.

I'm not really a big Topley fan but he bowled superbly today. The team in general showed a really good mentality to come back from a tough situation and in the end even go on to dominate. Impressed with Moeen and Curran too, and of course Livingstone gave a very good all round performance with only a few poor swipes. Mostly it was impeccable stuff from him.

Root doesn't quite look himself though unfortunately at the moment. Unless they can find their form then I can't see both him and Brook getting the nod in the strongest XI. Right now Malan is playing the best stuff of the 3, and he's a left hander too which is an added bonus.

Very good win today after a disastrous start. Livingstone has proven that his selection was right and I think that barring something crazy now the original 15 is going to be picked again

Must be Livingstone's best innings in an England shirt, too often he seems to get carried away wanting to play the big shot when he doesn't need to. Yesterday proved he can still score at a good rate playing sensibly.

Another missed opportunity for Brook, it's tough but I don't see how he gets into the first choice side. He'll go as a reserve and come into the squad if there's an injury which is probably right. Players like him and Atkinson really should have been playing 50-over cricket instead of the Hundred, Root could have done with those matches as well.

Feels like Roy’s place must be at threat currently. More issues with his back apparently and Malan is bang on form, as well as giving England really good left handed options. Brook must be more suitable than Roy as a batting reserve with his flexibility to play any position.

I agree with this. Brooks versatility makes him an excellent asset to have.

If Roy doesn’t get a game before England flys out to India, I’m not sure how he can go.

Ideally Roy and Root would play in the Ireland series

Malan has to play now imo so it’s between Roy & Brook for the final spot. Kind of sad to see Stokes limping so much after playing a sensational innings

With Root not in form, Malan becomes even more of a must. Need a consistent performer amongst the explosives.

This batting line up is so scary when it clicks. Imagine if someone showed you a glimpse of this back in the 90s.
