Insisting on starting McTominay is the biggest clue Ten Hag has lost it.
Genuinely should just insert a clause in our next manager's contract that they are automatically sacked if he plays him in that position. Although we should also sack everyone responsible for the fact that its been over 6 years and he is still even thought of as a worthwhile option in that position compared to alternatives.

Blame the guy who keeps starting him.
I will but I'm also going to blame McTominay for not giving a toss which is the bare minimum what you should be doing when the manager has selected you.

not just on him, but how the hell does this even happen:

Moving him back into the heart of midfield exposed everything he's bad at. He looked dangerous a couple of times in the first half but, for me, dithered on the ball too much in good circumstances. Could've played both Rashford and Hojlund in on different occasions. However, he is what he is. We've known that for years and we didn't learn anything new today.

No. Accountability.

Plus low footballing intelligence(for this level). The likes of McT and Rashford in particular frequently seem like county chess players trying to take on Carlsen when it comes to decision-making . Just different complexities of picture, different speeds of thought. He's essentially a blunt instrument who can fit into a simple side to hare around as an attacking 8 or 10 without much responsibility to track or even to be creative on the ball - take a few shots, win headers on set pieces at both ends, sometimes help his side to an underdog victory. Proper old style lower-end PL player from 20 years ago, compared to the standards for equivalent players in terms of problem solving on and off the ball these days.

The players are just not good enough. Pep wouldn’t train these players, he’d replace them.

He just isn't a midfielder. Not that he's a forward either but that's another point. I have no idea why ten Hag keeps him on the pitch when he's forced to play as our deepest midfielder (instead of Amrabat or, potentially, someone like Mainoo or even Hannibal).

It says something when our biggest goal threat is considered by so many to be so awful

He can only play up top right next to or under Haaland. Him in midfield makes no sense

He’s the only player who looks like scoring.
Except that he he doesn’t. The most goals he has ever scored in a season in the Premiership is 4 before now and he’s played for 6 years and over 200 games. I know he scored a couple against Brentford recently but that doesn’t make him a goal threat.

We already knew he was utterly useless outside of the opponents penalty area. But somehow a couple of goals and he's now expected to be intelligent and dedicated enough to track City runners and close down Bernardo before he hits crosses in. Something he failed to do about 5 times.

A devastatingly poor midfielder. And exponentially worse every 10 yards closer to our goal that he plays.

Funny thing is he and Casemiro have almost turned into identical players. Good goal threat but hugely detrimental in every other section of the pitch.

His three goals in two games has resulted in him starting today's match, and finishing as the DM ...

It's the 2nd time in a row Ten Hag has done this.

McTominay epitomizes what's wrong with Ten Hag's decision-making and his lack of belief in anything he's doing currently.

Absolutely awful again. Maybe he would do better in another team but based on the performance today he should be sold asap.

Absolutely ridiculous that one minute he is playing CF for Scotland and next being asked to be a holding midfielder for United. Just bizarre. Roles are completely different.

Our best player. We should have more players like him in the squad

He has no business playing as a holding midfielder for this club. In what language do I have to say it until someone finally gets the memo? As a second striker, I'm more than warm to the idea because the game plan is simple for him in that role. But as a holding midfielder, you don't need to look that far as to why he has been maligned in several sections of the fanbase.

In the first half he was the only one winning the ball and starting some attacks. Completely gone after the break though

That was because he was playing in a more advanced role, where his game plan was a lot easier to execute. You put him into the holding midfielder's role and you make his life far too complicated for his paygrade.

Why is this guy suddenly starting every week for us again after that brace against Brentford? I'm honestly just baffled by Ten Hag's decisions so far this season.

I'm sure he appreciated those goals but he became a bit part player and was potentially on his way out for a reason, and you can't suddenly forget all of that because he may have saved your job in one game ffs.

We looked a lot more threatening in the first half with McTominay as a 10 than we did in the second.
Mainly because the first half spared us the absolute horror show that is McT anchoring our midfield. Although he somehow also managed to make a bollox of a couple of our very rare second half attacking opportunities too.

It's bizarre, Its like eth just thrown out anything resembling what he wants to see and just hoping now. Mctominay starting a Manchester Derby for us when he didn't have to signifies that

This guy makes our players look invincible using stats you would wonder why we look so shit and lose more often than not if our players win the stats war every game.

We started playing well when Hannibal was starting, was playing great, not sure why he keeps playing Scott. Our best performance of the season in the cup was when both Bruno and Rashford were dropped. I think he needs to readjust things.

Might sound silly but him scoring those 2 goals has been the worst thing that has happened with eth's thinking. How in the blue hell has he managed to fool himself back into the starting 11. Atrocious player who has no business starting games for us
