It depends which Luke Shaw turns up in my opinion. Last year was an outstanding season from him but his head completely went in that game against Liverpool (to be fair , most of the team did) and I just seem to have my doubts that something is always around the corner with him-be it injury, catastrophic loss of form or one or two negative comments in the press. He's been here nine years and had three very good seasons. I guess I was spoiled watching Neville, Irwin and Evra do it season in, season out for United. Even Antonio Valencia put in some pretty consistent seasons at right back under LVG and Jose. Sometimes it'd be nice to have that level where you can depend on a full back.
His performance in that 7-0 went under the radar massively. Genuinely one of the worst 45 mins I've seen from a player.

Fullback is usually a position where you find any team’s most consistent performers. So that’s a good point. Shaw has been unusually flaky for the position he plays. He started this season in poor form too.

He looked shellshocked. Visibly didn’t want to be there.

We miss him though. We play well when he plays well.

He has been the most consistent player in this team since he began playing regularly about five years ago.

He is one of our most naturally gifted players however he has had the tendency to go through lengthy spells of underperforming.

19/20: Poor (getting dropped for Brandon Williams isn't a good sign)
20/21: Very good
21/22: Awful
22/23: Very good

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

He started 21/22 in awful form for the first couple of months, but to be fair his season was pretty much destroyed by injuries from November on so never got a chance to play himself out of it. From memory he got two different concussions (in a fairly short period which did worry me), a hamstring injury, caught Covid, and then had to have surgery again on the leg that he broke years before. Each time he came back he'd only get a couple of games before he was out again.

Every year there is a similar spell in the thread, Shaw is just everything that is wrong with this club. A bottler who shows up for a couple of months a year. His career at Utd has been nothing but disappointing.

All the hate about Shaw is shocking considering there are other players we need to be worried about first. Remember how much we spent for him compared to what we've spent on big stars who have come and gone, the guy goes through some patches, but he's literally been solid for most parts considering the price tag.

I think most of all our injured players, not having Shaw is hurting us the most. AWB was doing great too, but Shaw fit and firing is giving us another dimension to our left flank.

I'm with you.

He is a good footballer but just physically isn't dynamic enough anymore to be a top fullback.
He doesn't need to be old fashioned fullback he can slot in the middle of defense or in midfield when attacking. One of the best players in the league when on song.

He is one of the best players at the club when fit and in form. He is my favourite player, had been for years, so I’m probably giving him more slack than I might do.

He does have sticky patches, from time to time. It is important to have someone competing for his place who can keep him on his toes. He does get more injuries than some other players. His personality is a little reticent so he can appear to lack drive and authority and, bluntly, plays within himself at times.

All that said, his technique is just fantastic, he’s got as much pace as anyone when he puts the burners on, he’s strong. He can play as an overlapping full back, inverted or LCB. Could probably play at no6 and do a good job. He makes things happen, offensively, constantly getting into crossing positions, drawing CBs out, sets up a lot of opportunities.

Keeping him on the pitch and playing his best football is obviously not easy but we miss him like hell. Come back Shaw, you are bloody brilliant when you want to be.

I suppose it depends what type of fullback you prefer. I find the one that tucks in dull as dishwater. Much the prefer the type charging up and down the line.

On top of that if Shaw tucks in, Rashford is coming inside, the opposing right back has himself a very easy game.

Inconsistent and injury prone as he is (who in our squad isn’t at least one of those things?) I think he might be our best player (relative to the quality of other players in the world who play in his position). We need him back fast.

I'm glad he's avoided the shitshow of this season. Is a favourite scapegoat for our fans

When is Shaw getting back to the team? Is it close? I thought he should return by the end of November.

Bumps to threads like this, without bumping to provide an update, should be a bannable offence.

In almost 10 years, he has played 262 games for us. I'm not sure he's our saviour.
This is it exactly. We can debate about his quality all day long, but the reality is Shaw can’t be relied upon fitness wise.

I mean that's quite heavily skewed by that leg break, and 2 years or so after.
Transfer market says. I am not sure if you could attribute the leg break as the reason for injuries after he came back.
22/23 season seems like not the norm for Luke Shaw.

When is he back?
Was hints that he may make the bench for the Everton game but Newcastle or Chelsea games more likely, depends how fast EtH pushes him into the team. Rashford hasn't looked the same without him overlapping

I think we'll see a huge improvement in our overall play once he returns. We've missed his ball progression and press resistance. Maybe Onana will even be instructed to stop kicking it long now that we'll have an outlet at full back who can receive the ball under pressure.

Good lord I can't wait to see this man back in the team. Expect to see a significant uptick in our performances and results once he's fully match fit and in the groove.

It might be a stupid idea but I wouldn't mind seeing him and Varane at CB with Reguilon LB and see how it works.

I don’t think so. We’re badly missing Shaw’s ability to advance the ball from the left back position, so that’s where I want to see him play. Reguilon has just been running around like a headless chicken.

I completely understand. I'm just not sure Shaw next to Lindelof/Evans is as good as Reguilon next to Shaw.
